Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2

When I first saw "Guardians of the Galaxy" a few years ago, I really did not know what to expect as I was not familiar with the characters or the story. When the first scene came up, a sad boy in a hospital playing a cassette tape with "I'm Not in Love" playing, I thought "Huh? Wasn't this supposed to be a 'space movie' why were we back in Earth?" Turns out the film had more human and earth elements to it and ended up being my favorite Marvel movie-ever. It feels like James Gunn's bunch of a-holes hijacked my love and I was a fan ever since.

Now, with the much awaited finally hitting theaters, things can get a little tricky. You see a sequel to a much loved movie can either be a success or a disaster and with the many super hero movies that have come out in the past few years, who really remembers the second one right? well, except for "Captain America: Winter Soldier" the rest are forgettable and fall under that obscure list of movies you forgot that you actually saw.

Well I'm glad to say that "Volume 2" of the Guardians of the Galaxy delivers and stands on its own amidst the many super hero movies that come out year after year. The team becomes more of a family unit and this time things are personal. I love how they were able to keep much of the plot underwraps despite the highly anticipated trailers, you really weren't sure where the story was going, except that the guys are back and are hilarious as ever. Which is why I will honor this tradition as well and keep this review as spoiler free as possible.

Being a music geek, the now ingenious, unprecedented and probably game changing decision of director James Gunn to not only feature 70's pop music but to successfully incorporate it into the story has become a distinguishing trait of the film, one that has fans like me, born decades after discovering a treasure trove of awesome music and this continues in the sequel. Unlike in the first movie where you were not expecting a mix tape of songs to feature so prominently in the film, this time around you have an idea of what's going to be playing and (if you're like me) you have already listened to and downloaded some of the songs, it would be no surprise that you would be singing and dancing to the different songs (even if you're just seeing the movie for the first time). I have a vinyl of the first film's soundtrack and will definitely get one for the sequel! Currently listening to the songs from the two movies, which is also downloaded on my Spotify account.

The film once again opens with a flashback on Earth and looks into Peter Quill's (AKA Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt, who now has a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star under his name, by the way) parentage, we know his music loving mom passed away in the first movie but who is the "star man" that she fell in love with and whose genetic code made it possible for Peter to hold an infinity stone (again, in the first film) -albeit for a short moment only? This is a central theme in the movie and which is where much of the plot revolves in and-that's all that I'm saying about that. *zips lips*.

Groot (Vin Diesel) is now Baby Groot and is loveable and adorable as ever. Ever time he is on screen, the audience would just 'awwwww' and he just makes you want to take him home. But I think the one who stole the show was Drax (Dave Bautista) whose literal humor and dead pan delivery just had audiences laughing every time he was on screen.

I'm glad that Micheal Rocker's Yondu gets more screen time and that we look into his character - 'Why did he keep Peter all those years ago?'

Some things I didn't like about the movie though? Well it seems that everyone has some issue that needs to be dealt with (which was unnecessary for some) and some jokes were played through rather extensively.

Aside from the things I mentioned though, "Vol. 2" is a fun, personal movie which maintains the same charm and humor which made the first movie so memorable and a fan favorite.

I thought, well, Paul and I thought that the 3D conversion (it's probabbly better in IMAX) was a bit too dark and will definitely see the movie again when it comes out.

There are four mid credits and one post credit scene after the film, so just sit back and enjoy the ending credits, its actually pretty entertaining and opens up a whole lot of possibilities in the future *winks*.

8.5 out of 10. "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2" is now showing in cinemas!

Movies: Empowered Ladies Rock The "Galaxy" In “Guardians” Sequel

The women of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Karen Gillan (Nebula) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) are ready to rock the galaxy in the year's highly anticipated sequel.

In the film, reformed assassin Gamora hopes that her heroic deeds with the Guardians will help her atone for the sins of her past. Gamora must grapple with her own demons and the consequences of her flight from Thanos’ employ when confronted by her adoptive sister Nebula.

Saldana explains her character’s arc in the new film. “In the first ‘Guardians’ she’s on a mission to be free or die because she’s over it. There’s a selfish essence to her, and it makes prerogative very personal. Versus like in this one, she’s on a path of redemption, so she wants to be very present in trying to do good. And that also means, on a very personal and uncomfortable level, that she has to try to just let go of whatever animosity existed between her and her sister.”

The attempt to eliminate crime and establish global peace has resulted in the abolishment of basic human freedoms in the futuristic action thriller “Hunting the Phantom.”

The latest non-stop action film “Hunting the Phantom” takes place in the near future. The great invention of a global corporation, code-named "Phantom", ensures the crime eradication and security in the world. Save me to save yourself.” Several hackers transmit this message to each other, until it reaches Kazakhstan. None of the hackers understand the meaning behind this inexplicable message; only a mysterious stranger from Kazakhstan appears to know something.

Their aim is to change the march of history, to turn society into obedient puppets who will never know that their mind is under control.  The "Phantom" gradually breaks people's lives, but nobody can understand what’s happening as long as the "Phantom" destroys the life of two lovers - Timur and Keira. She is charged with murder, and he must break the law to save her life.

Movies: Chris Pratt Slays As Star-Lord In “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2”

Chris Pratt inhabits Peter Quill aka Star-Lord anew in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as he faces a family issue that he is compelled to resolve—his true parentage. Pratt reprises the role that propelled him into Marvel fandom and leading-man status.

Having now saved the galaxy once, the half-human intergalactic adventurer known as Star-Lord is newly famous and keenly aware of it. When the Guardians’ newfound notoriety brings Quill’s long-lost father back into his life, his bond with the other Guardians will be put to the test.

On casting Chris Pratt as Star-Lord/Peter Quill, director-writer James Gunn says, “When I was auditioning Star-Lord the first time around I was looking for somebody who’d come in, do everything that was on the page, do it well, do it in a funny way, but also give that a little something extra that made Peter Quill a little bit of a different character. And Chris came in and did that immediately. Chris is a very unique movie star in that he is a combination of being a big, masculine guy but also a very vulnerable guy. He has a vulnerability that the classic movie stars hint at, whether it’s Humphrey Bogart or Gary Cooper. Chris really brings that to life on the screen, and I think that’s what makes him a truly modern-day movie star.”

A visual spectacle, “Alien: Covenant” will bring the audience to an immersive world where humans have nowhere to run and hide from the monstrous creatures who wreak of nothing but carnage.

Movies: Cooper, Diesel Team Up As Rocket, Groot In "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2"

Superstars Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel return to lend their voices to Rocket and Groot in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vo. 2, the highly anticipated sequel, featuring the world’s favorite band of intergalactic misfits.

The action-adventure is written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Dawn of the Dead).

When it comes to voices, James Gunn knows Rocket’s better than anyone as the director has many times professed that there is a little bit of himself in the character. Rocket, a tortured little beast who’s been torn apart and put back together, is still incredibly funny and heartfelt at times, particularly as voiced again by Academy Award® nominee Bradley Cooper.

A scene stealer in the first Guardians of the Galaxy with only the same three words of ‘I am Groot,’ was the wise, old, talking humanoid tree creature Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel. Despite his unique appearance and extremely limited communication skills, Groot embedded himself in the heart of audiences around world with just those three little words. A valuable ally and a loyal friend to Rocket and the Guardians, the character makes the ultimate sacrifice and returns in the sequel as a baby Groot.

Voiced again by Diesel, the little Groot is a totally different character. “He doesn’t have the memories of adult Groot and he is a baby,” explains Gunn. “He’s completely adorable, but has a lot more anger issues than adult Groot did. All of the other characters react to Baby Groot in different ways. Drax doesn’t like him. Rocket yells at him a lot, but he is okay with him. Gamora definitely has motherly instincts towards him, and Quill barely acknowledges his existence.”

Picking up where Guardians of the Galaxy—2014’s highest grossing film of the summer—left off, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the action-packed, irreverent, epic space adventures of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord and his gang of eccentric characters as they patrol and protect the universe, doing mercenary work in the wake of the popularity and fame they garnered from saving Xandar.

Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, the story follows the team as they fight to keep their newfound family together while traversing the outer reaches of the cosmos to unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.

The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Tommy Flanagan as Tulik, Laura Haddock as Meredith Quill, with Sylvester Stallone as Stakar, and Kurt Russell as Ego.

Opening across the Philippines on April 26, 2017, Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

An impressive ensemble of actors led by Chris Evans along with Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, Lindsay Duncan and Jenny Slate support young multi-talented actress McKenna Grace as she takes on the titular role in director Marc Webb’s “Gifted.”

Evans plays Frank Adler, uncle and guardian of Mary (Grace) in “Gifted” who both lead normal lives until Evelyn (Duncan), Frank’s mom and Mary’s grandmother, decides to take custody of her grandchild.  Frank’s sister entrusted him to raise Mary after she died for fear that her daughter might also be subjected to the pressures she’s been through as a prodigy.  But as soon as Evelyn finds out about Mary’s intellectual state, Frank finds himself in a custody battle to keep Mary under his care.

On finding the right child-actor, director Webb insists there was a good reason for the massive search: “I couldn’t have made “Gifted” unless I found the right Mary Adler. It was the biggest hurdle to making the movie. There’s an emotional depth and sophistication you don’t see very often in an actor, but for a child, that’s a level of virtuosity that is incredibly rare.”

Movie Review: The Boss Baby

When I first saw the trailer "The Boss Baby" I wasn't really too excited about it. For one thing, the Boss Baby reminded me of Stewie Griffin from "Family Guy" plus I wasn't too sure what it was about. When the second trailer came around I had a better idea of the film and was actually looking forward to seeing it.

All I can say is that I entered the movie house with little expectations of the movie but when I left I loved the movie! It was about love and family and that there is always room for love, no matter what we think is already a happy life.

The film opens with Timmy and his perfect family life as the only child of Mr and Mrs. Templeton. Timmy had the love, time and attention of his parents-and he loved it.

The first thing that I loved about the film was that it featured a child who used his imagination freely, he did not need any hand held gadgets to entertain him or keep him distracted. He would pretend that he was an explorer in the jungle or a pirate on a ship. I think that its important to hold back the gadgets and let kids use their imagination for playtime and I loved that the movie featured this.

Timmy's happy and ideal life was cut short with the arrival of a baby brother. Now, his parents don't have time for him anymore, because they were all over the baby. You might think that this was going to some kind of sibling rivalry plot but not all is what it seems with this new baby.

For one thing, he wears a suit and has a briefcase (!)

Turns out that 'this baby' was on a mission. He was sent by Baby Corp. to look into a new puppy which was going to be released by Puppy Co. where Tim's parents work. According to the studies of Baby Corp. there was 'not enough love to go around' with puppies becoming so popular than babies and with more and more people preferring to  have puppies than babies.

Tim and the "Boss Baby" (Alec Baldwin) decide to work together (just to get rid of each other) and set out on a hilarious and touching adventure-one that only brothers can really share.

I love that the animation would move to 3D to 2D and also had some interesting camera movements. I was laughing and crying at the film (must be the pregnant hormones) and I really enjoyed it. There are a lot of pop culture references for adults and of course just seeing that "Look Who's Talking" secret baby world is always hilarious.

I think that "The Boss Baby" gets it right where "Storks" failed, and weaves a truly heart warming story of love and family and it really spoke volumes to me, as the eldest sibling and an expectant mother.

7.5/10 "The Boss Baby" is a family movie worth seeing and I must concur with the song at the end credits - "What the world needs now is love" and the important thing to realize is that we can never, ever get enough of it, even if it means making the circle of love, a little bigger.

The Boss Baby is now showing! #BossBabyPH

Movies: Pinoy Actor Dave Bautista Back As Drax In “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2”

For Fil-Am actor Dave Bautista (Spectre, upcoming Blade Runner 2049), returning to the Guardians fold in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a chance to reprise a character he truly enjoys playing.

“What I really love about Drax is he’s not what you’d expect from reading the comics,” Bautista says. “Everybody was expecting one thing, and we gave them another. It makes it more interesting. It’s easy just to be the big guy who’s always growling at people and intimidating people. We’ve seen it a million times. But when you get the same guy who looks the same way but just says the most ridiculous things that make you laugh, it makes him more interesting.”

Continuing, he adds, “And he’s also got that side to him that’s just all heart. He’s still heartbroken over the loss of his family. And I love that dynamic, man. I love playing with that. It’s challenging. It makes it’s interesting. It makes the character loveable and it makes people connect to him.”

Movies: Jude Law Cast As The Iconic Wizard Albus Dumbledore In The Next “Fantastic Beasts” Film

BURBANK, CA –April 12, 2017 – As fans across the globe eagerly await the next adventure in the “Fantastic Beasts” feature film series, Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the actor who will take on the role of one of J.K. Rowling’s most beloved characters.  Two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law has been set to star as Albus Dumbledore in the “Fantastic Beasts” sequel, it was announced today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In the much-anticipated new Wizarding World film, Law will portray Dumbledore long before the iconic wizard became the Headmaster at Hogwarts, as he has been known in the Harry Potter books and movies.  We meet him decades earlier, when Dumbledore is still serving as the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor.  He is also a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.

J.K. Rowling, who made her screenwriting debut on the global hit “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” has also written the screenplay for the second movie.  The story moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.

In making the announcement, Emmerich stated, “As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ cast, playing a character so universally adored.  Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros. family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.”

Director David Yates added, “Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him.  I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”

Jude Law earned Oscar nominations for his work in “Cold Mountain” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” winning a BAFTA Award for the latter.  He will next be seen in “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” and currently stars in the HBO series “The Young Pope.”  His many other film credits include the “Sherlock Holmes” movies, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Hugo,” “Contagion,” “The Aviator,” “Alfie,” “Road to Perdition” and “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” to name only a portion.

The first film in the “Fantastic Beasts” series, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” began a new era in the wizarding world, decades before the Harry Potter movies, which still reign as the top-grossing film franchise of all time.  Acclaimed by both critics and audiences, the 2016 release became a global blockbuster, earning more than $813 million at the box office.

Principal photography begins this summer on the new “Fantastic Beasts” adventure, which will be directed by David Yates, who previously helmed the final four “Harry Potter” features, as well as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”  The film also reunites producers David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen are serving as executive producers.

Slated for release on November 16, 2018, the film, which is the second of five planned “Fantastic Beasts” movies, will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Movies: "Fast" Crew Tries To Bring Home Rogue Leader In “Furious 8”

For Fast & Furious 8, the first chapter of Universal Pictures’ record-smashing homegrown franchise’s final trilogy, Vin Diesel as the newly rogue Dominic Toretto is joined by a returning all-star cast.

Chris “Ludacris” Bridges returns as Tej, brilliant tech-tactician and automotive mechanic extraordinaire. Revisiting a character every two years is a luxury that many actors do not get in the film business but for Chris “Ludacris” Bridges who marks his fifth turn as the automotive and tech tactician Tej, it’s a welcome sign when Morgan’s newest script shows up. Gone is the afro and garage coveralls Tej sported when he made his debut as a hustler in Miami’s illegal racing circuit in 2 Fast 2 Furious. These days he’s upgraded his wardrobe, toys and tools of the trade with the best that money can buy.

Nathalie Emmanuelle who made her franchise debut in Fast & Furious 7 is back as Ramsey as the brilliant hacker and God’s Eye creator Ramsey. The beautiful loner is now a more comfortable part of the team and has settled into her role alongside Tej, and has also built up her tech game now that she has unlimited resources.

“Ramsey hasn’t had the history with Dom that the rest of the characters have,” reflects Nathalie Emmanuel, who rocketed to fame on Game of Thrones as Missandei. “Although she’s been welcomed into the family, at the same time she is logical. She is all about the zeroes and ones and doing the math to try to figure out from a logical point of view what happened. Also, Ramsey is not necessarily as emotional as they are, and is the only one that can ask that question ‘Did he go rogue?’”

Tyrese Gibson is back as Roman, the fast-talking ladies man who’s never met a situation he can’t charm his way out of. Roman has consistently been the source of humor to balance out the high-octane action and drama that is the bedrock of the Fast series. No matter the situation, he is the first to eschew authority and speak his mind with his filter-free take on every situation; this always elicits the biggest audience laughs.

Spanish actress Elsa Pataky is back as Elena Neves, the Rio cop who fell for Dom, then became a fugitive on the lam, in Fast Five. Connecting over their shared losses she walks away from her life in Rio to build a new one with Dom in the Canary Islands. However, their idyllic life collapses with Letty’s return. As devastated as she is, Elena knows that Dom needs to find out the truth about his soul mate.

While Elena’s loyalties will always remain on the side of who she loves…Mr. Nobody’s loyalties still remain to be seen. The iconic performer Kurt Russell—whose character is back from an almost-certain death in the last film—takes great pleasure in the mischievous government spook who keeps everyone guessing.

“Coming in on Furious 7, I wanted to be able to create something that was a little bit different for this franchise,” Russell explains. “You don’t know much about Mr. Nobody, which I thought would be a fun invention for this serial approach. For now, he is proving to be a guy that the gang can trust. I don’t know how long or if that will actually remain, but that’s what is so fun about playing him. He takes everything as it comes and is very flippant about it all.”

About Fast & Furious 8

On the heels of 2015’s Fast & Furious 7, one of the fastest movies to reach $1 billion worldwide and the sixth-biggest global title in box-office history, comes the newest chapter in one of the most popular and enduring motion-picture serials of all time: Fast & Furious 8.

Now that Dom and Letty are married and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

Fast & Furious 8 features a returning all-star cast, as well as a star-studded array of newcomers to this world – Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Helen Mirren, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Scott Eastwood with Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron.

Opening across the Philippines on Black Saturday, April 15, 2017, Fast & Furious 8 is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
