Movies: “Happy Death Day” Opens At No.1 In US, Scares Up $26.5-M

It's celebration time for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse's Happy Death Day as the new suspense-thriller opened at No.1 in North America this weekend October 6-8, with $26.5 million from 3,149 locations.

(Check out the film's new spots at http://youtu.be/1vlpzmQTihk and http://youtu.be/2MqmAEG2c6Q and watch Happy Death Day in Philippine cinemas October 18.)

A horror spin on Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day centers on Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) as a woman who wakes up to the same day — her birthday — every day, and is murdered every time. Christopher B. Landon directed the film based on a script by Scott Lobdell.

The film, which earned a B CinemaScore, particularly appealed to female and younger moviegoers — the audience was split 54% female, as opposed to 46% male, and 63% was under age 25. The release date was pegged to Friday the 13th and the weeks leading up to Halloween.

“We’re obviously thrilled with the release,” said Universal’s executive VP of domestic distribution Jim Orr. “It’s an original, scary, and exciting twist on the genre,” he added, pointing to the studio’s successful partnership with Blumhouse. “They bring a lot more to the table than the standard genre fare.”

Earlier this year in January, Blumhouse’s Split opened to a monster $40 million in January, and went on to earn $278.3 million worldwide. Then, the next month, Get Out was a smash hit as well with a $33.4 million opening and $253.1 million in global grosses by the end of its run. The production house is also responsible for the hugely profitable Purge and Paranormal Activity franchises.

Happy Death Day is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Movies: Reality Of One Man's Sexuality Explored In Adolf Alix's (Jr.) Acclaimed “4 Days”

Exclusive at Ayala Malls Cinemas –  Greenbelt 1 and Trinoma

Adolf Alix Jr.’s LGBT themed film “4 Days” starring indie actor Mikoy Morales and Sebastian Castro that made its debut at the 2016 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival will now screen at exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas’ Greenbelt 1 and Trinoma starting October 18.

“4 Days” takes on the struggles of a gay relationship in times of confusion, curiosity and whether to stay inside or come out of the closet.  The movie is not the highly typical gay love story where boy meets boy and falls in love, it goes through the downfall of questioning the reality of one man’s own sexuality,  whether or not to choose a woman because of societal culture or to accept the fact that it is okay to love a man even if you’re a man yourself.

A showcase of the brilliance and bold directing style of Adolfo Alix Jr. who started his career in TV but is now making his name in the world of films,  “4 Days”  is an affecting and delicate take on wrestling with one’s own demons and finding one’s true self and love.

Alongside “4 Days” is the short film “Kinabukasan”, also directed by Adolf Alix Jr. that will play before the full feature film that includes Superstar Nora Aunor with Alden Richards.  Also an acclaimed work of the director, the short film tells the story of a lover and a son who meet a day after losing the person they loved the most.

Check and log on at Ayala Malls Cinemas’ www.sureseats.com for schedule and advanced ticket purchase of “4 Days.”

Movies: 20TH Century Fox Unleashes “The New Mutants” First Trailer

20th Century Fox finally released the first trailer of “The New Mutants” directed by Josh Boone that will open in Philippine cinemas on April 11, 2018.

The story of the “The New Mutants” revolves around a team of mutant heroes comprised of the first graduates from Charles Xavier’s school.  The exciting new movie stars  Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/ Cannonball, Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage.

In recent news, Stacey Snider, chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox shared, “New Mutants” is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a “Breakfast Club” detention/“Cuckoo’s Nest” institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it’s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like “The Shining” than “we’re teenagers let’s save the world.”

Additonally, Anya Taylor-Joy reassured fans in recent interviews, “I think the nicest thing about it is that Josh Boone, our director -- he's just such a fan of the comics, and he really loves them so much that he's really interested in just making sure that we do the comics justice for the people that love the characters. You know, we all feel so lucky to be such incredibly loved characters. So, while it's definitely a departure from the X-Men movies, the fans won't be disappointed. We definitely kept all the important bits in there.”

Movies: Abbie Cornish, A Force Of Nature In “Geostorm”

Australian actress Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, RoboCop) plays secret service agent in a forbidden relationship with a White House staffer (Jim Sturgess) in Warner Bros. Pictures' epic thriller Geostorm (now playing in Philippine cinemas).

In the film, after an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything...and everyone along with it.

Cornish says, “Sarah is such a fun character because she’s strong, athletic, intelligent and also feminine. She’s a tough woman who protects the president, but also has a fun, sensitive and delicate side to her, which we see in her relationship with Max (Sturgess). And that relationship in their work environment within the White House brings complications of its own. This role was a sweet one to step into, with a great energy to it.”

Movies: College Girl Makes Every Death Count In “Happy Death Day”

She made waves despite a brief but memorable supporting role opposite Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the Oscar-winning La La Land. Now, star-on-the-rise Jessica Rothe lands the lead role in Universal Pictures' new suspense-thriller Happy Death Day (in Philippine cinemas Oct. 18).

In the film, Rothe plays a college student named Tree Gelbman who relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.

When Tree is woken up by her cell phone ringing at the beginning of the story, the audience quickly discovers that it is her birthday. She is not thrilled about it being her special day, and is dodging her father’s phone calls…for reasons that will soon allow for character sympathy. It quickly becomes clear that she is not a nice person—and one that has many enemies that might be interested in her vanishing.
