Book Spotlight: Unsung Giant

If you believe that there are two sides in every story then you will definitely enjoy this book. I really liked the concept of how the author Jennifer Pendon took to challenging a myth and a legend.

It's like suddenly coming out and saying that the big bad wolf is not bad at all. Loki - the Norse God of Mischief has always been painted as the bad guy but for all we know he just might be a misunderstood character. I really admire how Jennifer Pendon challenged Loki's character, how perhaps his desire to prove himself as worthy may have been cause for him to be misunderstood. I really like the idea of rewriting something that has already been known and accepted.

In the "Unsung Giant" Jennifer Pendon takes us on a fast paced adventure of how Loki became an unsung hero- the unsung giant. When you read the book you are transported through different realms, travel through time and meet interesting characters both mortal and immortal.

Lots of Mythology

If you are a big fan of mythology, especially Norse Mythology then you will definitely enjoy this book. All the characters and the setting of the story stays true to Norse mythology. If you are a fan of Norse mythology or perhaps you are interested and what to learn more about it then you should definitely read this book. It is a quick and easy read yet captivating and thought provoking at the same time.

Truth in Fiction

Another thing that I really liked about the book was how Jennifer Pendon aligned the story with historical events like the Black Plague, World War II and even people such as Adolf Hitler. There are even hints of explanations to myths such as the Lochness Monster and Stonehedge I loved how all of these were related and it sort of gave you an 'ahhhh' moment. It just goes to show the depth of research that the author did in order to come up with the story.

I would have loved to have read a more detailed account of Loki's adventures here in Midgard. There is a real potential for a story here since you already have all of the elements. While reading it I sort of also felt 'What? That's it? Where's the rest of it?' that was how invested I was with Loki's character. It really is very interesting to see him in a different light.

Unsung Giant is a good read indeed and if you want something different from the normal hero story then you should read this one!
