Movies: Jessica Rothe, Back 2 Her Future In “Happy Death Day 2U”

Jessica Rothe leads the returning cast of Happy Death Day 2U, the follow-up to Blumhouse’s (Glass, Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 hit of riveting, repeating twists and comic turns. This time, our hero Tree Gelbman (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.

Director-writer Christopher Landon was thrilled that his star agreed to join the production for another time loop. One of Landon’s favorite parts of the sequel is the moment that Tree discovers she’s trapped in the same day. “Jessica has such great access to her comedic anger,” Landon says. He also appreciated just how seriously Rothe took the themes of love and loss. “She really understood the emotional stakes of both movies and connected with this one just as much—she made it as thoughtful and emotional as the first film was. For both of us, it was important to be more than a disposable slasher film; we wanted to give this a heart and conscience and have it say something.”

Movies: Beloved Sidekicks Benny, Metalbeard Return In “The LEGO Movie 2”

Two of the best sidekicks to take on any journey in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The LEGO Movie 2” would be MetalBeard and Benny, played by returning stars Nick Offerman and Charlie Day.  Though they’re as different as a galleon to a rocket ship, the bottom line is, these guys just want to get the job done and help their friends.

“MetalBeard is a pirate whose body was lost in battle and who managed to cobble together a new one out of spare parts that he’s constantly replacing,” says Offerman of his character, who resembles not only a pirate but a pirate ship, with a fair amount of Swiss Army knife thrown in.  “That makes him the ultimate mechanic and very handy in a crisis when an object needs to be put together.  Hopefully, MetalBeard is around to launch a shark or a cannonball out of his arm.” 

Movies: “X-Men: Apocalypse” Star Alexandra Shipp, A Different Kind Of Heroine In “A Dog’s Way Home”

Alexandra Shipp, best known for her role as the iconic mohawked super heroine Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse, plays a different kind of heroine in Columbia Pictures’ new heartwarming family adventure A Dog’s Way Home.

In the film, based on author W. Bruce Cameron’s beloved novel of the same name, the young actress plays Olivia, an animal rights activist who rescues Bella, A Dog’s Way Home’s canine star, in an abandoned broken down house.

Movies: “The Hidden World” Concludes “How To Train Your Dragon” Trilogy

As the trilogy based on the world she created comes to an end, no one has deeper feelings about saying goodbye to this chapter of Toothless and Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World than their creator, author Cressida Cowell.

“It sounds very unlikely, but it’s based on my own childhood,” reflects Cowell, “and the Isle of Berk is a real place where I grew up as a child. Stoick the Vast is based on my relationship with my father. Of course, the ending, ‘There were dragons when I was a boy,’ are the opening words of the books that I wrote 20 years ago when I just had a child. I tell the story from the point of view of the boy growing up, looking back to my own childhood, and Hiccup is a father to Toothless. The themes are so enmeshed with my own life that it’s incredibly bittersweet.”

Movies: Stars Of “Fast & Furious” Spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” Get Their Own Posters

Movie Review: Alita Battle Angel - is the best Hollywood Anime Adaptation yet!

There has been little to no success of an Anime Hollywood adaptation, until that is James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez came along. 

The director of non other than "Titanic" and "Avatar" has long since had the rights to Alita: Battle Angel and after being in production for a long time the film adaptation, based on Yukito Kishiro's manga "Gunnm" or "Battle Angel Alita" is finally getting the big screen treatment with the biggest names in the industry making it possible.

Produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau the cyberpunk action is directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) and stars Rosa Salazar as the titular character who delivers the best mocap performance since Andy Serkis himself.      

Speaking of Andy Serkis, of course the only team to bring the world of Alita to life in none other than WETA Digital (you know the Kiwis behind "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" films).

With the visuals of the film in very capable hands it is needless to say that Alita delivers on that department. I have never seen the fusion of human and machine look so seamless and perfect, which is just ideal for the world building that the film successfully delivers across as well. 

The action sequences are breath taking and edge of your seat exciting! This is one movie experience deserving of the big screen (the biggest one possible) so go IMAX! 

I watched a bit of the 1993 OVA and I can only say that the adaptation is pretty solid and some of the scenes were directly taken from the anime (even  the dialogue!) 

Set in a post apocalyptic time, years after the "fall" Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz) finds a cyborg in a scrapyard, said scrap yard is where the trash of the sky city of Zalem falls. 

Zalem is a massive and ominous city in the sky, which appears to be like a "heaven" to those living in the desolate "Iron City" which is where Dr. Ido and the rest of the survivors of a war try to make a living for themselves. 

Dr. Ido brings the cyborg, whose very human brain managed to survive back online and christens her "Alita". She can't remember anything about her past and while discovering the world around her as if for the first time, she looks at everything with a child like wonder but the dangerous streets of Iron City slowly awaken a killer instinct and a power in her.

There's a lot of edge your seat and jaw dropping action sequences in the film 

Okay, so there is a lot that happens in the movie (not spilling anything) and it could be overwhelming for some but growing up an Anime fan, you become accustomed to "lore", you are after all trying to incorporate a whole lot of source material in a two hour or so movie. I would say, don't get lost and overwhelmed in it. Just enjoy it. I think James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez do a good enough job of getting an action packed and quickly escalating film going. 

What I didn't expect were the emotions that the film drew from me, I didn't get to finish the OVA so there was this one cliff hanger (pun intended) scene that just crushed by poor enlarged heart. Like, really, there were tears stinging in my eyes and I was not expecting that at all.  

The film succeeds in making you root for Alita. Even if she is a cyborg, you want to see her kick ass, you want to see her succeed and by the end of the film, when she raises her hand to the skies you can't help but cheer her on. 

9 / 10 - Alita: Battle Angel is in cinemas Feb. 6 with evening screenings on the fifth.

Movies: New Actor Jonah Hauer-King Is Bella’s Beloved Human In “A Dog’s Way Home”

For young British actor Jonah Hauer-King, working with his canine costar in Columbia Pictures’ family adventure A Dog’s Way Home was a rewarding experience — especially given that it was his first time working with animals.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but she’s kind of the dream dog,” Hauer-King says of Shelby, the rescue dog that plays Bella, the dog whose journey the film is about. “She’s kind, loving, and warm. It was fascinating to learn how the trainers work with her — but more than anything else, it was a joy.”

Moives: Will Arentt, Allison Brie Back As Batman & Unikitty In “The LEGO Movie 2”

Reprising their popular roles as the gravelly-voiced icon Batman and fan-favorite Unikitty in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The LEGO Movie 2” are Will Arnett (“TMNT: Out of the Shadows”) and Allison Brie (Netflix’s “GLOW”).

If change is an issue, the last place anyone would look would be in Batman’s direction.  As he himself would surely attest, this is one rock-steady dude who does his own thing and doesn’t change for anyone.  He doesn’t even alter his color palette. It’s strictly black, and sometimes very, very dark gray.  But oh, Batman fans, there are some incredible plot twists ahead for this beloved minifigure, as the filmmakers continue to delight in messing with him.
