Movies: New Actor Jonah Hauer-King Is Bella’s Beloved Human In “A Dog’s Way Home”
For young British actor Jonah Hauer-King, working with his canine costar in Columbia Pictures’ family adventure A Dog’s Way Home was a rewarding experience — especially given that it was his first time working with animals.
“I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but she’s kind of the dream dog,” Hauer-King says of Shelby, the rescue dog that plays Bella, the dog whose journey the film is about. “She’s kind, loving, and warm. It was fascinating to learn how the trainers work with her — but more than anything else, it was a joy.”

Movies: Bryce Dallas Howard Lends Voice To Bella In “A Dog’s Way Home”
To tell the heartwarming story of Bella, a dog who embarks on an epic 400-mile journey home after she is separated from her beloved human, the producers of Columbia Pictures’ A Dog’s Way Home found the perfect voice talent in Bryce Dallas Howard, whose vocal performance captured all the emotions Bella feels on her adventure.
It was a casting decision that made the author of the novel the film was based on very happy. “The very first time I heard your voice, I thought, ‘that’s perfect!’,” says W. Bruce Cameron, author of A Dog’s Way Home the novel and also co-screenplay writer for the big-screen adaptation, to Howard in a joint interview for the film. “That’s exactly what I heard in my head when I was writing A Dog’s Way Home. The way you brought that to life, the joy, the way you captured the way that dogs are just so always optimistic. You think about all of the adventures — and some of them are pretty treacherous — that Bella goes through on her journey back home, a lot of potential dangers, but yet [she remains] optimistic, happy, having fun the whole time.”

Movies: “Dolphin Tale” Director, Star Reunite For “A Dog’s Way Home”
Having appeared in and directed a number of films involving animals — including helming the two hit Dolphin Tale movies — Charles Martin Smith, director of Columbia Pictures’ heartwarming tale A Dog’s Way Home, admits to being enthralled with the genre.
“I’m probably the only director in the business that actually prefers working with kids and animals,” says Smith with a laugh. “I’m fascinated by making movies about animals, nature, and wilderness, and A Dog’s Way Home combines them in a way that’s very exciting for me. When I was a young man acting in Never Cry Wolf, the director of that film, Carroll Ballard, taught me so much about working in nature and working with animals and understanding how to capture that on film. I try to carry that forward in the films that I make now.”
