Movies: Bryce Dallas Howard Lends Voice To Bella In “A Dog’s Way Home”

To tell the heartwarming story of Bella, a dog who embarks on an epic 400-mile journey home after she is separated from her beloved human, the producers of Columbia Pictures’ A Dog’s Way Home found the perfect voice talent in Bryce Dallas Howard, whose vocal performance captured all the emotions Bella feels on her adventure.

It was a casting decision that made the author of the novel the film was based on very happy. “The very first time I heard your voice, I thought, ‘that’s perfect!’,” says W. Bruce Cameron, author of A Dog’s Way Home the novel and also co-screenplay writer for the big-screen adaptation, to Howard in a joint interview for the film. “That’s exactly what I heard in my head when I was writing A Dog’s Way Home. The way you brought that to life, the joy, the way you captured the way that dogs are just so always optimistic. You think about all of the adventures — and some of them are pretty treacherous — that Bella goes through on her journey back home, a lot of potential dangers, but yet [she remains] optimistic, happy, having fun the whole time.”

Bryce Dallas Howard: More Determined, Focused In “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”

Coming-off a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Netflix’s Black Mirror, Bryce Dallas Howard returns to the role of Claire Dearing in Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the sequel to the 2015 global megahit Jurassic World.

Her character, Claire, has been irrevocably changed by the disastrous events of three years ago.  “In Jurassic World, Claire goes on a very clear arc,” reflects Howard.  “You see who she is on the exterior, but you don’t know who she is on the inside.  By the end of the first film, you know what this person is really made of and can clearly see who she is.”

While Owen (Chris Pratt) retreated into a life of solitude, Claire has done the complete opposite—creating the Dinosaur Protection Group (DPG), whose mission is to save the dinosaurs remaining on Isla Nublar.  “She is still dealing with the fact she needs to take responsibility for everything that happened,” Howard continues.  “She made a mistake she can never take back because she was a part of the creation of the Indominus rex; she wrote the check for that.  Now the world is a different place because of her actions.  She opened Pandora’s Box, and she can never close it again.  All that Claire wants to do is be on the right side of history.  It’s her cause and mission.”

Movie Review: Pete's Dragon

There has been an absence of good family adventure movies of late but Disney's "Pete's Dragon" surely fills in that gap. Based on the 1977 Disney live animation musical of the same name, 2016 gives it's own spin with impressive (as always) CGI from Weta, oh you know, the guys behind "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". It was interesting how they brought the eponymous "Elliot" (Pete's Dragon) on the big screen. Considering he is unlike lost dragons, you see, Elliot is a 28 foot green furry-yup, you read that right, -furry dragon.

At first, I wasn't so sure about the whole "furry dragon" bit, but then I was reminded of "Falcor" the lucky dragon from the 1984 fantasy adventure "The Neverending Story", Falcor actually looked more like a dog that a dragon, so okay I can dig the "furry dragon". The things about Elliot is that he grows on you, he's so damn cute, you'd have a heart of stone not to have a soft spot for him. As I was watching the movie, he also reminded me a green "Sully" (from "Monster's Inc.").

I can't help but think that Weta worked on the greedy, ruthless Smaug, (a dragon of a different kind) on the "The Hobbit" and then had to go 360 with Elliot. I remember seeing a feature on creating Smaug, that each scale was unique and different. I'm sure they gave the same attention to detail, because Elliot was really, really furry.

Sorry, I think I got carried away there, let's go back to the story shall we?

Robert Redford is grandfather goals in "Pete's Dragon".

(Ahem). In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, there are stories of a big green dragon, with eyes as red as hell-fire, as told by an old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) -who looks really old in the film by the way but has that sweet grandfather vibe so still heartwarming. For years he has delighted the local children with his stories. My guess is that the movie was also set in the 1970's, which is why children still gathered around for tales about dragons and didn't have their faces in front of hand held devices, which was refreshing.

While the kids were entertained, Grace (the beautiful Bryce Dallas Howard) Mr. Meacham's daughter isn't so keen about these stories, she should know since she works as a park ranger in the woods. That is of course, until she meets Pete, (impressive acting from Oakes Fegley) a mysterious ten year old, who reminds you of "The. Jungle Book's" Mowgli, he is dirty, has overgrown hair, is dressed in scraps of cloth and can sure run fast and climb trees.

Grace takes Pete to town supposedly to turn him over to Social Services but she is surprised at Pete's claims of living in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot and based on the description, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham's stories.

Rounding up the cast of humans is. Natalie (Oola Laurence) the eleven year old daughter of Jack (Wes Bentley) who owns the local lumber mill. Personally, it's nice to see Bentley in a role, where he's not a psychotic killer (American Horror Story: Hotel), Jack shares mill duties with his shoot-now-think-later brother. Gavin, (Karl Urban). We love Karl Urban as "Bones" in the new "Star Trek" movies, so to see him play the comedic antagonist was rather refreshing.

Karl Urban is not your likeable "Bones" in "Pete's Dragon".

Speaking of comedic, I love the subtle humor in the film - such as police standard operating procedures when it comes to pursuing dragons and even a golden moment when a patient falls of a gurney. I know, I know, that was mean but super hilarious, without trying too hard which makes it effective.

I would have loved to see more badass in Grace, her character seemed like a perfect godmother in the story, it was hard for me to ground her, yeah the throwing of keys was nice but I would have wanted more of that. I would have also preferred for the last shot of the movie, to just be Pete looking up and just having that implication that Elliot was there, and then end with a big blackout with Pete's face happy, amazed and maybe just a hint of a dragon's shadow in the end, but then again, that's just me.

7 out of 10. The heart of the film, isn't about the existence of dragons but the love of family, even if you don't have the same blood flowing in your veins or even if you're covered in green fur. It's more than just the story of "a boy and his dragon" but a beautiful story about finding our families and keeping them and in these trying times, we need more of these.

Bryce Dallas Howard: New Leading Lady in Jurassic World

Throughout it's franchise, Jurassic Park always had it's strong leading ladies, for Jurassic World it's none other than Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of actor-director Ron Howard (we loved his movie, RUSH). This time though, Bryce is not playing a scientist or a mother in search for her son, Bryce is the dragon lady -Claire, who runs Jurassic World.

Bryce Dalls Howard has always been a chameleon kind of actress, I distinctly remember her red hair which probably landed her the role of Victoria in the Twilight Saga: Eclipse after replacing the original actress who could not commit to the third movie. She also played the annoying Hilly Holbrook in "The Help", she dyed her hair blonde as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3.

When things run smoothly in Jurassic World, it’s because of Claire; when they don’t, she’s held accountable. Deftly managing the needs of thousands of guests every day with a constant eye on the bottom line, it’s her job to make sure that the park remains exciting to sophisticated parkgoers who have seen it all.

Claire watches Jurassic World from the sanitized safety of a control booth, where she monitors all activity (human and dinosaur alike) from a safe distance. Indeed, she views the dinosaurs strictly as “assets” and has lost sight of the wonder and power they exhibit. It is only when things fall apart that Claire experiences the park from a completely different perspective: as the hunted.

Beyond the allure of being a part of the beloved franchise, the actress appreciated the caliber of storytelling and the strong character she was tasked to portray. Relays Howard: “It is fantastic that [writer-director] Colin Trevorrow created this multifaceted, three-dimensional female character who goes through this very emotional journey within the greater context of a giant, effects-driven dinosaur movie. At the end of the day, it’s a good story well-told.”

When we first meet Claire, her personal life has taken a backseat to her responsibilities at the park and the pressures—not to mention the questionable ethical decisions—that come along with them. “Claire is responsible for the entire park and understands that at the end of the day everything needs to add up, and there are some difficult decisions and realities within that,” shares the performer. “Her journey becomes about finding her own humanity and her ability to be open and not fixated on making everything work in order to make a profit.”

Of his leading lady, Trevorrow commends: “Bryce is one of our best actors that we have. She created a woman who starts off just on the borderline of being unlikable. She takes you on the journey, and by the time you get to the end…the ending is hers. I’m so proud of what she does at the end of this movie. If you didn’t have an actor who could make you believe everything that was happening, it just wouldn’t work; it would all feel silly. Bryce is just extraordinary.”

When the park’s newly developed dinosaur begins exhibiting potentially threatening intelligence, well beyond expectations, Claire is forced to seek outside assistance and reluctantly pays a visit to behavioral specialist Owen, with whom she shares a bit of history.

The chemistry between these two seemingly opposite, headstrong characters is undeniable. Explains Chris Pratt who plays Owen: “We know that something happened between these two on a date, and Owen enjoys poking fun at her because she’s wound so tight. There’s obviously an attraction between the two of them, and that fuels this conflict that’s constantly between them in these crazy circumstances.”

Howard responds to the romantic undertones and how they propelled the story line, something new to the world of the Jurassic franchise. “One of the many great things about this story is that, in the context of the chaos that has broken out in the park, they realize that they need each other and go on this journey to save her nephews, save the park and ultimately themselves,” the actress shares. “The romantic undercurrent feels very unique for a Jurassic film, and I appreciated that.”

Opening across the Philippines on June 10, “Jurassic World” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
