Everyone likes gifts. It's a surprise wrapped in bright paper, covered in huge colorful bows. The excitement and anticipation in receiving a gift, the mystery of what's inside it and the joy of actually opening it are all emotions we are familiar with; but not all gifts are meant to be pleasant. What if the gift is from someone in your past-someone whom you share a dark secret with? You might want to think twice before opening that gift.
A heart-stopping, thought-provoking psychological thriller, “The Gift” is from producers Jason Blum and Rebecca Yeldham (“Insidious,” “Paranormal Activity”) and actor, writer, producer and first-time director Joel Edgerton (“The Great Gatsby,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Warrior”) with co-stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall.
In “The Gift,” Simon (Bateman) and Robyn (Hall) are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon’s high school that sends their world into a harrowing tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo (Edgerton) at first, but after a series of uninvited encounters and mysterious gifts prove troubling, a horrifying secret from the past is uncovered after more than 20 years. As Robyn learns the unsettling truth about what happened between Simon and Gordo, she starts to question: how well do we really know the people closest to us, and are past bygones ever really bygones
"The Gift started for me with a simple premise: what would happen if a high school bully ran into his victim fifteen or so years later? What would or could be the effects? How might the past come to bear on the present? How could the past, unaccounted and unresolved, rupture a present situation?” shares Edgerton.
"A nice couple opens the door a little bit to a stranger,” Edgerton explains, “who then wreaks havoc on their life. That’s how we start, but that’s definitely not where we end. “It’s a very well-written script,” says cinematographer Eduard Grau, “all the characters kind of change and all the characters affect each other in a weird way that we all find kind of common and personal.”
I'm really excited about The Gift, it has been called the "Surprise Of The Summer" with a 92% rating in Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have called the movie "wickedly smart & playfully subversive".
So what was inside my gift from Gordo? Incidentally it was a photo from my High School reunion, which sent chills up my spine, I mean the movie works on an angle about High School bullying, so that freaked me out a bit. I was no bully in High School of course, more of the weirdo for being into Anime and stuff but definitely no hard feelings from any of my batch mates. At lest not one that I know of.
