During Sunday’s Super Bowl, Netflix premiered the first trailer for the upcoming landmark natural history series Our Planet, from the creator of Planet Earth and produced in partnership with World Wildlife Fund and narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

This marks the first time a nature documentary series has been featured in a National Super Bowl spot.

Events: In Conversation with "YOU" Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell

They walked into the room as if they were the characters that they played in the show. 

Penn Badgley in a plain white shirt tucked into a pair of jeans, his thick dark locks tousled as if he had just stepped out of bed. His intense and brooding eyes would burrow into yours if you so as much as lock gaze with him. 

 Shay Mitchell looked like she stepped right out of a glamorous fashion magazine. Dressed in an immaculate white ensemble, without a hair out of place, her flawless sun kissed skin glowing.She was the very epitome of a Hollywood actress, in her element as she smiled and waved at the cameras. 

The two actors are in Manila for the Press Tour of their Netflix Original Series, Romantic Thriller "YOU" which sees Badgley's character Joe, a Book Store Manager in New York who becomes obsessed with Beck, a charming and beautiful struggling writer.  

While Joe literally stalks Beck, he has to face off with her rich, beautiful, manipulative and scheming best friend Peach, played by Shay Mitchell. 

Badgley is very vocal about not admiring his character who is basically a psychopath and in his mind, the embodiment of the "internet troll". He talks of how they, as the people behind the show should take responsibility in making sure that the balance of his character (part charming, part creepy) is always in check. 

He is meant to represent things that are inside all of us like "the internet troll" he says, who online expresses wanting to harm others but only in Joe's case he actually does it. 

Speaking of "internet trolls" Shay Mitchell also discussed how the show's incorporation of social media is just yet another reminder for us of how what we post online is a "highlight reel" of our lives, a filtered and curated show of what we want people to see but it doesn't necessarily mean any of it is the truth. 

"It's so easy to fall in love with people you don't know" she says. 

You feel like you get to know them (through social media) with what they put out there and I think a lot of the time, I have to think about what I put out there. It (really) is a (delicate) balance, a fine line. 

I think as long as you can use it and know that what you are seeing is a "highlight reel" - its not reality, its the best of the best moments of that day, that's been curated, perfected and filtered a million times. If you can go into it knowing that,  then you can use it appropriately, Mitchell says. 

The series has already been picked up for a second season. The first season is currently streaming on Netflix.

Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell are coming to Manila for YOU

Stars of the new Netflix Original Series, YOU, will be in town on January 14-15

Special Fan Event at Mooney’s Bookstore from the show at The Greenbelt Gallery, 2nd level, Greenbelt 5, on January 15, 5:30 pm onwards

2019 is off to a good start with Netflix bringing the stars of its new Original Series, YOU - Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell - to Manila, to promote the show and interact with Filipino fans.

Now streaming on Netflix, YOU stars Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg,  a long-time manager at boutique bookstore, Mooney’s, where he meets and falls in love with Beck (played by Elizabeth Lail). Joe is mysterious, resourceful, and is a chameleon. His obsessive love for Beck comes with a few challenges… one of them is Beck’s best friend, Peach Salinger, played by  Shay Mitchell. Peach is the heir to the JD Salinger family and has her own complicated relationship with Beck.

Penn and Shay will interact with media on January 14 and will appear for a special fan event later at Mooney’s, inspired by the bookstore in the show.  Fans can experience Mooney’s, win swag and get a chance to see Penn and Shay starting 5:30 pm at The Greenbelt Gallery, 2nd level, Greenbelt 5, on Tuesday, January 15.

Series Review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I was given early access to the first five episodes or "screeners" as we call them to "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and as expected and as early trailers suggested is nothing like its campy 90's predecessor which was more of a sitcom (comedy). In fact, the 2018 version led by the producers of "Riverdale" seems to be cutting ties from its wholesome roots by turning to the occult. 

From the Gothic production design to curses, hexes, spells, a dark Baptism and basically a following to the dark lord, and no, I don't mean Voldemort but you know, the one that starts with an "S". Ssssssooooo....yes, you may gasp and clutch at your pearls as the series dips into a more traditional battle of good versus evil. 

The battle for Sabrina's soul. 

You see, Sabrina Spellman was born to a Warlock father and a mortal mother which makes her half witch and half mortal. The series opens to the days leading up to Sabrina's 16th birthday, which is a significant occasion in witch tradition as it is when Sabrina chooses between the path of night and the path of light, it is when she chooses one life over the other, leave her mortal life behind and in doing so saying goodbye to her friends (Roz and Suzie) and her boyfriend, Harvey to become a full fledged witch and join the "Academy of Unseen Arts" (sort of like Hogwarts but without the four houses or Quidditch) where Sabrina will learn how to become a witch. 

While Sabrina battles with this difficult decision, this also reflects one of the shows strongest themes, making your own decisions and choices against following a path and living a life that was "meant for you". I'm happy to see that the characters (well, the mortal ones) are not taking any form of bullying sitting down and that these teenagers' concerns don't revolve around prom and the trivial things in life. They're a pretty mature bunch and that's a relief. 

By the fourth episode, Sabrina, played brilliantly by Kiernan Shipka-whenever she is on screen, you just can't keep your eyes off her, as she approaches the role with both an innocence and a strength, comes with a sort of compromise to her dilemma, as well as a new found mission.

What keeps your interest in the show is not just the titular heroine herself but her family, made up of the icy Aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto) and the lovable Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis). I appreciated how the series also explores the Spellman sisters very complicated relationship. Sabrina also has a housebound cousin, the robe wearing, coffee drinking Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) who at the beginning starts of as a source of advice for the troubled teen but slowly gets an arc of his own (Yehey! More Ambrose please!) 

Each of Sabrina's mortal friends (and Harvey) also have their own conflicts to face, sometimes they also seem to come out of horror movies, now whether having a half witch as a friend will be an advantage or a disadvantage is something left to be seen.

While Sabrina has a pretty strong system with her family and friends (even though they may not all have the same idea of what would be good/best for her) there are also evil forces who desperately want Sabrina on "their side". 

The Weird Sisters (basically Mean Girls but also witches -that is just one bad combination right there) are sometimes allies to Sabrina but most of the time bullies her and gives her a hard time in their often coordinating outfits and dark lipsticks. 

Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle) is the Headmaster at the Academy of Unseen Arts and is a high priest in their coven and will do all in his power to persuade Sabrina to the path of Night. 

Probably the most dangerous yet is Michelle Gomez who plays the once shy and timid Miss Bardwell but who has now been possessed by a powerful "demoness" and is not afraid to use a spell or two to get the job done. 

There are definitely a lot of interesting plots going on in "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and unlike its counterpart over at "Riverdale" knows who they are and are unapologetic about it. 

Oh and they have goo choice in 70's rock music, "Devil Woman" by Cliff Richard is a favorite, the use of blurring camera edges is interesting, it either adds to the errie feel of the scene or it just makes the camera look dirty. 

Episode 5 was a fun mini arc, which featured a Filipino demon and part of our folklore and no, it was not an "aswang" so that was interesting, it reminded me a bit of "Charmed" and "Grimm" the episode ended in a bit of a cliff hanger so I what to know what happens next. 

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" will be available on Netflix on October 26 with 10 episodes. I read that a second season has already been ordered.

THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES, a Christmas adventure from producer Chris Columbus (“Home Alone”, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone") and director Clay Kaytis ("The Angry Birds Movie"), tells the story of sister and brother Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa - as you've never seen him before - and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it's too late.

About The Umbrella Academy:

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. The Umbrella Academy is based on the popular, Eisner award-winning comics and graphic novels created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The live-action series stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton, and Mary J. Blige, and is produced by Universal Cable Productions for Netflix. Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) will serve as executive producer and showrunner, with additional executive producers Jeff F. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit. Cast includes: Kiernan Shipka, Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Abigail Cowen, Lachlan Watson, Bronson Pinchot, and Gavin Leatherwood. Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also serves as chief creative officer of Archie Comics, penned the script for the series. Aguirre-Sacasa executive produces alongside Riverdale collaborators Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger. The drama hails from Warner Bros. Television-based Berlanti Productions.

Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past -- some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House. Created, directed and executive-produced by horror mastermind Mike Flanagan (Hush, Oculus, Gerald’s Game), The Haunting of Hill House is a complex family drama wrapped in a chilling horror story. Trevor Macy serves as executive producer alongside Flanagan. Meredith Averill acts as co-showrunner and executive producer. Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank executive produce, as well.

Netflix has released the scary good teaser for the highly anticipated Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starring Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman. It shows glimpses of the frightening new world of Sabrina, from the same producers of Riverdale. In this sneak peek, you see Sabrina and other key characters celebrating her 16th birthday — all while an eerie rendition of “Happy Birthday” plays in the background. After all, it is Sabrina’s Sweet 16.

SNEAK PEEK: Trailer for this weekend’s new episodes of Korean drama series ‘Mr. Sunshine,’ from the creators of ‘Goblin’ and ‘Descendants of the Sun’

“Please protect Ae-sin,” says Ae-sin’s grandfather in the trailer for this weekend’s upcoming new episodes of Mr. Sunshine. “It must be someone who would protect her no matter what. Someone who would do it with utmost perfection.” It is not clear to whom he is speaking but shots of Eugene Choi (Lee Byung-hun) and Goo Dong Mae (Yoo Yeon-seok) are shown in between. And towards the end of the trailer, Kim Hee-sung (Byun Yo-han) is shown with streaks of blood on his face.

Based in Shinmiyangyo, or the US expedition to Korea in the late 19th century, Mr. Sunshine tells the story of a Korean boy born into a family of house servants who runs away to board an American warship, later to return to his homeland as a US marine officer.
