Movie Review: Sing

There must be something about music and animals -or singing animals for that matter that has humans (no matter the age) just captivated. Which is probabbly why films that feature such is effective in keeping hyperactive kids occupied (a glorious hour or two for their parents, I'm sure). 

Whatever the reason for this fascination "Sing" brings over 84 songs- (yes, you read that right) 84 songs from a wide selection of genres, across different decades to original songs and all of them amazing performances (a treat for a big music nerd for me) into a film featuring never before seen animal characters in movies (a koala and a porcupine among them) who carry such real conflicts that just draws you to them. 

Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) is an optimistic koala, whose theater has fallen on hard times (stage crews whose checks have bounced, unpaid electric bills, leaking roofs, a crumbling building-you get the picture) and is desperate for a show that will save his theater. 

Which brings his "Singing Competition" to the stage- because who doesn't love an "Amerinca Idol with Animals" right - and with a $100,000 prize money - who can resist? 

I wonder where Buster will get that kind of prize money? 

The story becomes more than just a singing competition as each of the competition standouts: 

Johnny (Taron Egerton) a gorilla who wants out of his father's gang. 

Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) is an overtaxes mom whose whole life revolves around her 25 piglets and overworked husband. 

Meena (Tory Kelly) is an elephant with a beautiful voice but who has an intense stage fright. 

Mike (Seth MacFarlane) is a jazz and blues mouse who should really listen to Darth Vader's advise and not to choke on his aspirations. 

Ash - (Scarlett Johansson) is a porcupine whose musical creativity is being hindered by her boyfriend's own ambitions. 

These unlikely aspiring singers wrestle with their own personal conflicts amindst just wanting to sing. 

There are also some surprising, nail-biting scenes that just had me so invested in the characters, I was just in pieces wondering how they would surpass the challenges in the film (and they were a lot!) 

I'm happy that the film did not follow the typical singing competition format and instead created a story grounded on its too real characters. 

The music, the songs, the dancing is the delicious icing on the cake to an already memorable animated feature. Definitely my favorite Illumination movie! Other studios better watch out! I think Illumination just found the perfect mix of heart and music in their films. 

10/10 - I was singing, laughing, crying and errupting in spontaneous applause in the film. 

Currently listening to the soundtrack on Spotify which was has been playing for about three hours already. "Sing" is now showing in cinemas!

Witherspoon proved to be the production’s ideal Rosita. Once a very promising singer, Rosita longs to recapture the feeling of being celebrated for her talents and to challenge herself in front of a live audience. Witherspoon first shocked the world with her singing talents in Walk the Line, in which she portrayed legendary artist June Carter. Praises Illumination founder Chris Meledandri: “Not only is Reese a brilliant actress and humanitarian, she has an inner fortitude that simply gives flight to Rosita. You root for Rosita at every step of the way because of the steely determination and maternal compassion that Reese gives this surprisingly complex character. She’s simply riveting in the role.”

In the singing competition, Rosita will be partnered with a Scandinavian pig named Gunter who instantly sees her inner diva and makes it his mission to unleash her incredible gifts. Their final performance will leave her family slack-jawed and appreciating her for the amazing talent that she is.

Movie News: SCARLETT JOHANSSON, A PRICKLY PORCUPINE IN “SING”

Superstar Scarlett Johansson breathes life to Ash, a prickly teenage porcupine with a punk-rock attitude, in Universal Pictures and Illumination’s Sing, a musical comedy about finding the shining star that lives inside all of us.

In the film, Ash auditions for a singing competition with her egotistical, unsupportive jerk of a boyfriend, Lance (Beck Bennett), but only Ash makes it as a finalist. In rehearsals, her rebellious nature continually puts her at odds with contest producer Buster (Matthew McConaughey), who envisions her as a pop-star princess; meanwhile, she wants to write her own authentic rock songs that reflect her unique style. Ash will have to go through a painful breakup, but in the end she’ll prove her integrity and sing on her own term

While audiences know Johansson as an international superstar, not as many fans realize that she’s an accomplished singer/songwriter—who has released two albums and collaborated with Pete Yorn. As the voice of Ash, a disaffected porcupine who has been recently dumped by her no-good boyfriend, Lance, Tony Award-winner Johansson had to tap into her inner angst-ridden teen to deliver Ash’s powerhouse vocals.

A soulful, Cockney gorilla, Johnny’s beautiful singing voice and passion for music are in direct opposition to his role in his father’s bank-robbing crew. Movie News: QUIRKY LIVE-ACTION DIRECTOR TRIES ANIMATION WITH “SING”

While Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri has primarily worked with filmmakers who began their careers in short-form animation, the studio's latest comedy Sing marks the first time he has partnered with a filmmaker from live action for an Illumination feature.

Meledandri, who was certain that writer-director Garth Jennings’ unique path would bring distinctive charm to the collaboration, states that their connection began long before Sing’s writer/director even knew it: “I fell in love with Garth’s independent film, Son of Rambow. I felt that he was such an authentic storyteller, and I loved that it was based on his own childhood as an amateur filmmaker.” As well, Jennings’ extensive experience directing music videos informed a curious perspective and grasp of the power of music in telling visual stories. “I had a hunch that Garth’s sensibility would be a perfect fit for this idea that’s preoccupied me.”

During one of Meledandri’s trips to England, he asked to meet with Jennings and shared with the filmmaker this seed of an idea he had. Meledandri showed him a picture of a group of four koalas and told him to imagine they were holding little microphones. He asked Jennings for his thoughts on telling a story about a singing competition…one set in a world populated entirely by animals. “I knew that Garth and I share a deep love of music and that he is a gifted storyteller,” reflects Meledandri. “We both felt that this concept would provide us the opportunity to tap into the global appeal of music-based storytelling.”

Jennings worked with Meledandri as they crafted Sing, in which the characters give everything for a life-changing opportunity. Indeed, the performers struggle with everyday problems that we all experience at some point: feeling overlooked by family, worrying about bills, overcoming barriers that prevent happiness and growing comfortable in our own skin. The intersection and narrative would be built around a theater-owning koala named Buster Moon, who first became entranced by the theater as a young joey. It was back then when, alongside his doting father, he experienced a magical evening that bent his life’s arc for good.

It is this most unlikely of heroes who proves pivotal to the rest of the characters in the story. “At the very beginning of the movie, you meet Buster Moon as a six-year-old koala,” Jennings discusses. “He is taken to the theater for the first time by his father, and it completely blows his mind.
