DVD Feature: "Bridge of Spies"

"Bridge of Spies" has been on my to-buy DVD list for some time now, especially since I really enjoyed the film when I saw it last year and I know Paul would too! True-Story-Historical is really up our alley. Plus Spielberg and Hanks right? :) 

It also definitely helped that Mark Rylance won 'Best Supporting Actor' at the Academy Awards.

The DVD has 2 features, a 'Cold War' feature which even shares a personal Cold War story from Steven Spielberg's own father. Which also includes some interviews with some of the actual people who are part of this amazing true-to-life story. As well as what could be considered a good enough documentary of the time period. Definitely a great addition to the growing collection! 

'The Martian' on DVD!

A great book and a great movie which I both enjoyed (and loved) in 2015 was 'The Martian' and during my recent trip to the record store I saw that it was already out on DVD! Yeay! 

For only P550.00, the DVD comes with Special Features, including an ad for Under Armour featuring Matt Watney, our favorite lonely astronaut. I actually missed out on the last few minutes of the film, since I was in a hurry to get to work, in fear of being late :p I also knew that Paul was going to love it and my sister-in-law is also a Bio-chemist :) So-more reasons to get the DVD. 

Also, with the film bagging the 'Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)' and 'Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) for Matt Damon and being nominated for 7 awards in the upcoming Oscars, it was a no-brainer to add it to the collection. 

There was a little surprise when I opened the DVD, apparently there's a raffle contest for a chance to win a copy of 'The Martian' on paperback. Now, the book has a pretty interesting publishing history, when author Andy Weir couldn't get the support he needed from literary agents, he put the book online in serial format one chapter at a time for free on his website. Fans urged him to make an Amazon Kindle version for c99 (the minimum requirement). The Kindle version went to the top of Amazon's list of best-selling science-fiction titles and sold 35,000 copies in 3 months. This of course caught the attention of Crown Publishing who bought the rights in March 2013. 

A year later, the book debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list. So-owning a physical copy of the book and adding it to the collection would be pretty neat! Hoping to win :) 

Jurassic Park DVD Feature

P300 boxed DVD sets of our favorite movies is a real treat for us. It makes up our humble collection of DVDs, CDs (ano now Vinyl) at home :) some people collect shoes or bags we collect movies and music :) -hey to each his own right ?

When we saw a boxed DVD set of the Jurassic Park trilogy it was a no brainer that we would be adding tha to our collection, although we didn't pick up the DVD set yet (much to our dismay). When I came back for it a week before the release of Jurassic World the price had already gone up to P450.00! I was internally kicking myself in the shin for not getting it sooner. So before the price could go up any further I already bought it - I do have to get ready for Jurassic World. 

I've already seen the movies growing up so I just needed to do a little catching up but most importantly those Special Features! I'd love to see what went on behind creating those dinosaurs. I mean we are talking about uncharted territories here-using CGI for dinosaurs! It was really interesting how all the elements were made and come together in the movie and that's something that you can only find out through the special features :) Of course screaming from excitement while watching the movie on our flat screen TV was the cherry on top ;) 

As I'm writing this I've already seen the first movie and the special effects and I really loved it! 

I still have two movies left to watch and even if they're not really as popular as the first but I'm still excited - plus there are also special features in those two discs! 

I think I'm ready for Jurassic World which will be showing in cinemas on June 10, 2015. As I was watching the special features of the first movie (hosted by James Earl Jones by the way) I found out that the original Jurassic Park was released in June 11, 1993 and now the new movie is coming out in June 10, 2015-that's like 22 years ago! Just thinking about it brings goosebumps! :) 

Jurassic World is also starring Chris Pratt (Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy) so - yeah <3 

Got the DVD boxed set at the Magnavision kiosk in front of Fully Booked at Eastwood Mall :) 

There are also other great finds at affordable prices ^_^

Terminator 2 DVD Feature

There was this Movie Trivia sheet that was going around in the office and of course being a self-proclaimed a Movie Maven (and a bit competitive) I was excited to get right to answering the sheet.

This was how it worked: you would guess the movie from which a quote or a line was said and among the different lines that were asked, this one stood out: "Hasta La Vista Baby" of course this was a very easy question since it's mostly common knowledge that the line came from the Terminator franchise, how did I know it was from the second movie and not the first one ? Well there was a question in the trivia sheet that went: "I'll be back". Which I know came from the first Terminator movie since I finally got to re-watch it on Star Movies after searching (in vain) for the first movie on DVD. Logic also told me that "Hasta La Vista Baby" was something the T800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) could have learned from a teenage John Connor therefore Terminator 2: Jusgement Day, So I got two answers on the trivia sheet :) 

Seeing those lines reminded me that I still haven't watched the Terminator 2 DVD I got for only P100.00 from Eastwood Mall :) 

So when I got home I immediately placed the DVD on the player and got to relive (becasue I already saw it) one of the most well known movie franchises in pop culture history. 

The second movie takes place a few years after the first one ends. Sarah Conor (Linda Hamilton) is in a psychiatric facility (talking about the rise of the machines and a war in the future can land you in places like that). Her son John Connor (Edward Furlong) -the future hope of mankind is a rebellious teenager in the care of foster parents. Destiny catches up with the mother and son when the liquid metal, shape shifting T-1000 (Robert Patrick) is sent to the past to kill the young John Connor. An unknown hero is also sent from the future to stop the T-1000 and it's none other than the original antagonist of the first movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger's revamped T-800 who has been reprogrammed to protect the Connors instead of trying to kill them. 

A cult classic that should be part of any home movie collection Terminator 2: Judgement Day on DVD for P100.00 is a steal! Too bad there weren't extra features on it though :( 

Still it's a good time to catch up on your Terminator lore with the new movie Terminator Genisys coming out in July of 2015 (30 years after the original 'The Terminator' came out in 1985.) but instead of doing a reboot, the franchise is going to take a new twist in the story. Which is probably why it would be a good idea for you to review your Terminator terms and timelines so you don't sit in the movie house with your mouth open. 

Looking forward to this since Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) is putting on her leather jacket and will be wielding guns as the new Sarah Connor. Not so sure about Jai Courtney as the new Kyle Reese though- let's wait and see how the Divergent alum does when the movie comes out. 

Jurassic World is another movie from the past that is making a comeback and will be on cinemas on June 10, 2015. I saw an original boxed set of the Jurassic Trilogy for only P300.00 in Eastwood! It's the Magnavision kiosk across Fully Booked at the fourth floor of the Eastwood Mall. That's actually my next target :) hoping to acquire it before the 10th of June!

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno DVD Feature

When I got my copy of the first Rurouni Kenshin movie on DVD, I  have yet to start officially collecting DVDs which explains the non existence of a DVD Feature on the first movie. 

Now that I am looking up at my humble yet growing DVD collection it was really a no-brainer that I would be getting a copy of Kyoto Inferno (the second installment in the trilogy of Rurouni Kenshin movies, based on the manga and anime series by Nobuhiro Watsuki) I did a lot of writing when the movies came out (movie review on Kyoto Inferno here) just because the movie was the realization of my childhood. Which probably explains why I'm still writing about it months after the movie posters have been taken down in he cinemas and now the DVDs of the movie are up on record bar shelves and thus this DVD feature :) 

You probably have heard about the DVD launch which happened last Saturday at Astroplus in the Podium. You can read all about it here. Actually the DVD has already been out for some time now but fans of Takeru Sato who plays the role of the wandering Samurai celebrated the DVD along with the actor's 26th birthday. You can read all about the event here. 

Right after the DVD Launch Paul and I immediately popped the DVD in the player and watched the movie (and here my review begins) since Kyoto Inferno is the first part in a two-part movie which culminates in The Legend Ends. Because of this and since the two movies were released within a month of each other it was like one whole movie instead of two. Which is why watching the DVD got me remembering which scene happened in what movie. Watching it all over again I got to relive all those feelings and emotions I felt when I first watched it on the big screen. 

A definite DVD to buy, whether you are fan of the anime/manga series or a fan of Takeru Sato Kyoto Inferno has it all - jaw dropping fight scenes, bad ass villains and heart breaking life lessons learned. The only thing lacking in the DVD though ? Special Features because there was none - none at all which was a big dissapointment really since the first one had special features they weren't that good but still there were features and as someone who collects DVDs the special features is the icing in the cake, the filling in the donut. Without it it's a movie that can be downloaded or streamed online. I guess this is a call to Warner Bros. I hope that the last movie in the trilogy - The Legend Ends - will have special features. Pretty please?
