Summer KOMIKON Releases!

Summer KOMIKON is just around the corner, it will be on Saturday (April 16, 2016) at the Bayanihan Center in Pioneer.

At this point in this post, my Tito David will take over :) I lifted this from his blog www.fiveleggediguana.blogspot.com -make sure to see him when you go to the Kon!

Debuting at this year’s Summer Kon:

DAKILA: Metronom
Issues 2 & 3 (of 3)
By David Hontiveros and Romnick Magbanua

Before anything else…
First DAKILA story arc to reach completion!
Yay, us!
Now, on to the road to compilation…

Ahem.

Your name is Brandon Ramirez and you’ve been a geek your whole life: comics, movies, RPGs, cosplay.

And now you’re officially the world’s first superhero, as evidenced by the cape, the mask, the totally ripped physique, and those crazy-awesome powers.

Higher agencies seem to have conspired to steer you right into that skintight outfit.

We have only one question: How’s that working out for you?

There’s been an angel murder, and an attempted angel murder.
Who’s on the case?
Gil Grissom? Mac Taylor? Or (Heaven help us!) Horatio Caine?
Nuh-uh!
Dakila’s on the case!

Featuring three characters previously seen in Tatsulok: A Vision of Dust (though probably not the three you’re thinking of, plus one of them looks a whole lot different now).

Dakila. 18 years old. Cosmic champion.
All of a sudden, acne and getting a driver’s license are so not a big deal anymore.

DAKILA: Makadaot
Issue 1 (of 3)
By David Hontiveros and Carl Corilla

Fatima helps Demetrio out, and they both run into some trouble in Perdida.

Oh, and Dakila shows up!

Wait.
Was that a spoiler?

URIEL: Hekhalot
Issue 3B (of 4)
By David Hontiveros and Michael Urbano

Uriel is a mighty arel, held in reverence and awe by his fellow arelim, feared and despised by the shedim hordes.
And right now, his fate and existence lie in the hands of his seven-year-old mortal charge, Maleck de los Santos.

Uriel has a throwdown with Malael in the diabul, while, back in theoikoumene, the good Doctor Perez goes totally nutballs!

PLUS!
For some extra-‘Verse action…

BATHALA: Apokalypsis
Issue 6B (of 7)
By David Hontiveros and Ace Enriquez

What if there was only one superhuman in the whole world?
What if the world was about to end as predicted in the Book of Revelation?
What can one superman do to hold back the hand of the Almighty?

Bathala faces the savage baalim, and the cracks in the UP’s New World Order gradually become visible.
Plus, a new power! And (Gasp!) a new weakness!

PLUS PLUS!
I’ve received intel that there will also be a LOST JOURNAL presence at the Summer Kon, so keep your eyes peeled for that, too. (Hopefully, you guys can stretch your budgets so you can pick up some ‘Verse stuff and the LOST JOURNAL…)

Books: The Lost Journal of Alejandro Pardo

No need to wait for Halloween to read to read up on the creatures and beasts of Philippine folklore; out now from Summit Books Is The Lost Journal of Alejandro Pardo. From local comic book greats Budjette Tan, Kajo Baldisimo, David Hontiveros, Bow Guerrero and Mervin Malonzo.

Immerse yourself with riveting details about the many monsters and mysteries in local folklore. The book divulges all of the deepest, darkest secrets of Philippine lower mythology.

Make sure to take home this lost relic and uncover the underworld through the eyes of Alejandro Pardo. Now available in bookstores nationwide for only P295.00

If you've been following the blog, then you probably know that David Hontiveros is actually my Uncle. I would definitely have to check on him whether we're related to Alejandro Pardo, since Pardo is my Grandfather's middle name, it might be the whole 'Capiz' thing. I guess I'll have to check out the book to find out. Hope you support the book-just getting tired of all those Wattpad 'novels', I'm looking forward to a local published book that's actually worth reading. -Sorry, Not Sorry.

Update!

Found the below up on the Summit Books FB page. It gives more details on the book!

So check it!

The book reveals riveting details about the many monsters and mysteries that abound in local folklore, purportedly based on documents written by a character named Alejandro Pardo.

In The Lost Journal of Alejandro Pardo, the titular character was a Spanish explorer who came to the Philippines in the early 19th century during the Spanish colonization. Pardo studied the creatures of local folklore—among them the aswang, kapre, bakunawa, duwende, tikbalang, tiyanak, and manananggal—and chronicled his eyewitness observations in a journal which also contained hair-raising illustrations of its subject matter. Pardo’s writings, which were gone from the light of day for two centuries, ends up in the hands of one of his modern-day descendants and a colleague—and the result is this book, a chilling look into the world of Philippine folklore’s ghastly beings. Things turn a lot darker when the colleague suddenly disappears and a lot of unfortunate events followed soon after. Cursed or whatever you might call it, this book details popular creatures from Philippine folklore as well as how can one defend oneself from the creatures when confronted. The chapter “Defending Against the Dark” emphasizes the need to always be ready and identifies which weapons are the most effective.

Behind The Lost Journal of Alejandro Pardo is a who’s who of the Philippine comic book scene: David Hontiveros, the Palanca Award-winning and National Book Award-nominated writer of the Seroks science fiction collections; Budjette Tan, author of the National Book Award-winning works Trese and Mikey Recio and The Secret of The Demon Dungeon; Kajo Baldisimo, co-creator and illustrator of the Trese series; Bow Guerrero, co-creator and artist of the Mikey Recio and The Secret of The Demon Dungeon; and Mervin Malonzo, author and artist of the National Book Award-winning Tabi Po.

Building Worlds with David Hontiveros: A feature on the PhilippineDaily Inquirer

The blog has new purpose and that is to give a more pronounced presence for my award winning Uncle on social media (I'm his Social Media pimp so to speak- Social Media Manager is a better way of putting it also :p)

I mentioned on a recent post that my uncle - Author, writer and comic book writer - David Hontiveros will be featured on this Sunday's Philippine Daily Inquirer Sunday Magazine, I picked up a copy of the newspaper this morning and unfortunately the feature wasn't there. I've been informed that there was a delay in the printing and that it would be available on the November 9 edition but no need to be sad since there is already a digital copy of the article available!

(Yehey!) I would recommend that you still get the physical copy though - I'm old fashioned that way (still prefer physical copies of albums over the digital downloads).

Many thanks to Ruel S. Vera for the feature- there were a lot of things that I didn't know - that my grandmother read horror stories and that my grandparents took my then 8 year old uncle to watch "The Omen" which was rated R back in 1976. Were my grandparents cool or what?!

November KOMIKON New Releases!

DAKILA: Buwan Issue 2 (of 3)
by David Hontiveros and Jason Confesor

Lately I've noticed that the blog has been featuring a lot of local talent, we started with featuring local musicians, original Filipino music and up and coming bands which would give foreign bands a run for their money and kick them right off their spots on our radio and Music Television Countdown shows.

Now the blog features have grown into featuring local artists (multi media artists and painters) since we have been going to Art galleries of late. I am also currently working on my self proclaimed #ProjectSeroks which is my personal mission to spread word that Filipino Literauture is more than those Watt-pad "novels" (I hope you can hear the sarcasm with the quotation marks) and that we have writers and authors who don't count on a naive heroine and a hunky hero caught in a clichéd romance to sell a book.

Seroks is actually a compilation of short stories set in a Dystopic future in the Philippines where Genetic Engineering and Cloning are done (as an aftermath of a disease that left 9 out of 10 Americans sterile) but like everything else these clones are eventually pirated and become what is known as a "Seroks".

Never thought that that plot could come from a Filipino writer eh? Well you'd better believe it because that Filipino Author is none other than Palanca Award Winning, Neil Gaiman of the Philippines (yes-a Colleague of mine actually said that) and also my Uncle - David Hontiveros!

I'm actually still reading Volume 1 of Seroks- there is a Volume 2 and Volume 3 out already in book stores. It is a good read and I'm not just being biased here, still currently reading since I'm too busy with work and working on blog posts (oh, what I wouldn't give to actually have writing for the blog as my work but it won't pay the bills, so until then I am still a slave to the Industry :p)

You've probably seen my posts on Seroks, will continue to post about it and will eventually do a review, but this post is actually not about Tito David's work on Seroks but about New Releases from Tito David's Comic Books which he works on as a writer. These new releases will be available on November KOMIKON which is on November 15 in Bagumbayan, Pioneer.

Here's a sneak peak of what you're missing on:

Your name is Brandon Ramirez and you’ve been a geek your whole life: comics, movies, RPGs, cosplay.

And now you’re officially the world’s first superhero, as evidenced by the cape, the mask, the totally ripped physique, and those crazy-awesome powers.

Higher agencies seem to have conspired to steer you right into that skintight outfit.

We have only one question: How’s that working out for you?

It’s been 96 days since 18-year old Brandon Ramirez first became Dakila.

His girlfriend Haliya is a lunar princess, whose childhood bestie, Agrios, is a demon-werewolf hybrid who’s none too thrilled with the teen superhero hanging around…

In “Bad Moon Rising” (the first part of “Balatkayo”), join us to celebrate someone’s birthday with some deception and a side order of treachery!
Plus, Brandon and Haliya go out dancing.
Sort of.

DAKILA: Metronom Issue 1 (of 3)

It’s only been 19 days since 17-year old Brandon Ramirez first became Dakila.
And now, a viral video is about to become instrumental in drawing him into the orbit of an eccentric millionaire expat, and he’s about to find out just how dangerous collecting rare colored vinyl can actually be…

Dakila. 17 years old. Cosmic champion.
All of a sudden, acne and getting a driver’s license are so not a big deal.

Hoping we can drop by for KOMIKON on the 15th but as it stands now we already have 3 events lined up on that Saturday so we'll see... :p

Aside from these exciting new issues to be released Tito David will also be featured in an interview on this Sunday's Inquier Magazine! For those of you who have already been following his work you should definitely grab a copy tomorrow and for those of you who want to get to know him more well a newspaper feature will be a great place to start! ^_^

You can read more on Tito David's blog! :D Click HERE!
