Movies: Cameras Roll On The True-Life Drama “Just Mercy”

Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson star in the film, which brings one of the most important stories of our time to the big screen

Burbank, CA – September 6, 2018 – Principal photography began this week on Warner Bros. Pictures’ inspiring drama “Just Mercy,” based on the award-winning nonfiction bestseller by Bryan Stevenson.  The film stars Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther,” “Creed,” upcoming “Creed II”) and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx (“Ray,” “Baby Driver,” “Django: Unchained”) and Brie Larson (“Room,” “The Glass Castle,” upcoming “Captain Marvel”).  Award-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle,” “Short Term 12”) is directing “Just Mercy.”

“The movie is structured so it opens with the dream of being a getaway driver, and very quickly turns into the nightmare of being a criminal,” says director and screenwriter Edgar Wright. “The opening chase is sort of positioned as a clockwork act of precision. Everything goes right. Then very quickly, with subsequent situations, things start to go wrong, and very visceral consequences start to bear down. The storm clouds have been gathering during the movie. At some point, Baby’s luck is gonna run out.”

Director-writer Edgar Wright had been thinking about how to cast his new film Baby Driver for years before it went into production. In Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx, Wright is sure he's found his perfect heist crew.

The filmmaker says he always intended Baby Driver to be an ensemble movie, if only because as much as Baby might like to escape his work colleagues, he can’t. “The idea is, take this loner, and put him in a gang that he really doesn’t want to be in,” says Wright.

Though Wright initially imagined Baby as short – “because I’m short,” he adds, laughing – he says meeting Ansel Elgort made him realize nobody else could play the title role.
