Movies: “Ralph Breaks The Internet” Opens At No.1, Connects With PH Audiences

MANILA, Nov. 24, 2018 -- Filipino audiences connected and shared their love for Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” as the delightful sequel opened at No.1 on its first day of release in the Philippines Nov. 21, beating the week’s other major studio films.

Earning over 130,000 USD on Day One, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” posted the sixth biggest first day gross for a Disney animation title, performing impressively as it heads for a sensational five-day opening weekend.

When the trailer showing Vanellope Von Schweetz meeting the Disney Princesses in Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 was released in June, it became such a viral sensation it was a miracle that it didn't, well, break the internet.

It was a scene that the filmmakers always felt was a keeper. Says co-director Phil Johnston, “Putting Vanellope in a room with all of the Disney princesses was funny from the get-go, considering her unapologetic personality and laid-back outlook. And as it turned out, Vanellope is on a coming-of-age journey, so her encounter with the princesses was integral to the completion of her arc in the film.”

In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ much-anticipated sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, actor John C. Reilly steps back into the character of Ralph, the ham-fisted video-game bad guy with a heart. And despite the six-year difference between the original and the sequel, getting back into it was a piece of cake for the 53-year-old comedian.

“It clicked pretty fast,” says Reilly, who reunited with several cast members and filmmakers from the first film. “There’s a level of comfort there. We found the fun and mischievousness from the get-go.”

Attending the press screening for "Ralph Breaks the Interent: Wreck It Ralph II" I was expecting to have a few laughs and enjoy the movie but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I enjoyed the movie so much, I was laughing and crying. I was also reminiscing and reflecting on the many lessons the film had. 

All is well in the arcade as BFFs Ralph and Vanelope develop a routine of playing in their respective games during the day and hanging out during the night, when the arcade is closed. While Ralph is happy with root beer at Tapper's to cap off a long day, Vanelope is looking for something more. 

Which leads them on their adventure to the Internet, in search for a part in "Sugar Rush" (Vanelope's game, in case you forgot). It's really interesting and impressive how the writers thought of the landscape of "the internet". In the trailers, we saw each website (or social media platform) as a place or a building. I'm the movie, this is explored more and you see little avatars for the people when they use the internet. For example, you go online, there's a little avatar that looks like you and travels through the different websites you visit. You might also recall from trailers, that pop up ads appear as very "persuasive" and insistent shady characters and it's hilarious and really, just a smart and funny way to portray this vast and interesting world we move in every day. 

 

Now while, the internet may be a second nature to us, who depend so much on it, in our everyday lives. 'Its a whole new world' for Ralph and Vanelope who have never seen or known anything outside of the arcade. 

So just imagine how overwhelmed they get when they are suddenly submersed in this new environment and while the two may have different opinions of the internet, their friendship is tested. 

Bigger, funnier, crazier and oh so unpredictable. Ralph and Vanelope bring their unique friendship to the world wide web and things don't go as planned. 

I think the adults would enjoy this more than the kids but don't worry there's something for everybody (Disney Princesses FTW!) in the movie. There are so many little Easter eggs (both on Pop Culture and on the Internet +10 points if you catch Geocities) I'm sure you wouldn't be able to catch everything on your first watch. This movie deserves multiple viewings with family and friends.

The film has so many lessons (both for kids and adults) that a discussion with your kids after the movie is highly recommended. I appreciate how they touched on the good and bad side of the internet, albeit lightly. The bigger take away lesson from the movie, is one about friendship.

That changes can happen in a friendship or any relationship for that matter and that we shouldn't let our personal insecurities get in the way of other people's happiness. Change is not always bad, it can be good too and we can adapt, we can make compromises. 

Just because something is "good" doesn't necessarily mean it can't be "better". Pretty deep for a couple of characters in a game eh?

MANILA, Nov. 15, 2018 - Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Josie Trinidad recently visited the Philippines to talk to fellow Filipino animators at the 2018 Animahenasyon, Philippine Animation Festival. Trinidad is the head of story for Disney’s upcoming Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, the much-awaited sequel to 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph.

“I can't tell you what a dream come true everything on this film has been for the animators,” Trinidad told the aspiring and professional animators at the festival about her experience working on Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.

The proudly Filipino animator, who oversaw the film's story team (the group responsible for translating the script to its first visual form), shared the animation process at Walt Disney Animation Studios. She also showed behind-the-scenes videos and several clips from Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.

Imagine Dragons, whose single “Natural” has spent eight weeks at No. 1 Alternative radio, appear in the arcade-based video (watch for the Disney Easter Eggs). In the movie, video-game bad guy Ralph struggles with his evolving friendship with fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz. According to Imagine Dragons’ lead singer Dan Reynolds, the film’s emotional themes are reflected in the song “Zero.” “They are compelling because they are real to each of us, personally,” said Reynolds. “That journey of feeling like nothing and trying to realize and recognize your worth as a human is an important part of life. And given the distorted version of reality kids face online and the expectations that come with it, this struggle is real for so many people right now.”

Dave Meyers directed the music video. Meyers was recently recognized at the Video Music Awards for video of the year (“Havana” by Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug), best pop video (“No Tears Left to Cry” by Ariana Grande) and best visual effects (“All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar ft. SZA).

Featuring singles “Natural” and “Zero,” Imagine Dragons will release their fourth studio album, “Origins,” on Nov. 9 via KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records. “Origins” is available for pre-order HERE and can be purchased in a variety of formats and bundles HERE.

Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) encounter Shank and her unusual cohorts when they venture to the internet in search of a replacement part for Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush. Shank, a tough-as-nails street racer, takes her role and her tricked-out car very seriously and doesn’t like to lose. When Vanellope finds herself in a street race with Shank, her Sugar Rush driving skills are put to the test—and Shank is impressed. “She is the coolest character in this world of Slaughter Race,” said director Rich Moore. “Shank’s lived a lot, she’s seen a lot, yet she’s got nothing but kindness in her heart—that’s the duality of that character.”

According to director/writer Phil Johnston, Gadot adds extraordinary dimension to the character. “There's so much texture to her voice and so much living in her voice,” he said. “If Ralph is Vanellope's big-brother figure, we wanted a big-sister figure. We wanted someone that Vanellope would look up to, and Gal is definitely someone kids—and a lot of adults I know—aspire to emulate. I can't imagine anyone else embodying that part.”
