Disney Brings A-Game To “Hall D,” Dazzles Fans With Surprises

Kenneth Cobonpue, TWDC PH Country Manager Veronica Cabalinan, Legendary Disney artist Mark Henn, and TEDC SEA Media Networks Marketing Director Daniel Tan
MANILA, July 31, 2018 -- The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) Philippines took the AsiaPOP Comicon 2018 by storm when it presented “what’s now and what’s to come” from its powerhouse brands.

"Mickey has brought nine decades of smiles, laughter, hope and happiness to fans all over the world, and to mark this milestone year, we are so pleased to bring Hall D at AsiaPOP Comicon," said Veronica Cabalinan, Country Manager for The Walt Disney Company Philippines. "It’s amazing to see so many Disney Fans gather for the first-ever Hall D in Southeast Asia."

Delightfully billed as “Hall D” (echoing names of fan convention panels in the US), the presentation treated Disney fans to first-look unveiling, jaw-dropping exclusive content and surprise revelations.  By the time legendary animator Mark Henn bid the crowd goodbye as the final speaker, the crowd was on its feet, cheering with a standing ovation.

The panel started with a presentation on DisneyLife (the World of Disney in one app) and the big-reveal of new TV programs from Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD.

Movies: Emotional Story Draws Director Marc Forster To Disney’s “Christopher Robin”

Marc Forster, the acclaimed director known for his eclectic range of films—including “Finding Neverland,” “Quantum of Solace” and “The Kite Runner”—now returns to direct Disney’s heartwarming live-action adventure “Christopher Robin” starring Ewan McGregor and Haley Atwell.

Forster grew up loving Disney live-action films and was immediately drawn to the story of “Christopher Robin.” It had a sense of magic realism, and he believed it had the potential to become an artistic, emotional, funny and timeless film.

Disney’s “Christopher Robin” brings the timeless charm and nostalgia of A.A. Milne’s stories and characters to the big screen in an imaginative tale about the joy and purity of youth. Speaking to the child in all of us, the film is a gentle reminder to let some of those qualities infuse our adult lives.

Movies: “Mission: Impossible - Fallout” Gives Tom Cruise Biggest Opening In PH

MANILA, July 30, 2018 -- There’s no stopping Tom Cruise from doing the impossible, as his latest epic action-adventure “Mission: Impossible - Fallout” just erased even his own box-office records in the Philippines!

The sixth installment of the 22-year-old spy franchise, “Fallout” opened with a staggering P120.7-million in five days (July 25 to 29), eclipsing two records in one swoop: All-Time Biggest Opening Weekend for a Tom Cruise title and Biggest Opening Weekend for the “Mission: Impossible” series.
Former record-holder for both milestones is “Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation” which bowed in 2015 with P105-million.

Local audiences are primed for “Mission: Impossible - Fallout”  which provided a thrill ride that relies on real stunts done by Cruise himself and not special effects during every scene.

Movie Review: Mission Impossible: Fallout

Going into Mission Impossible: Fallout, I actually wasn't expecting much, I thought to myself: "Oh, its another Mission Impossible movie" but I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong because Fallout is definitely the best Mission Impossible movie to date.

Despite being the sixth installment in the franchise, Fallout proves that it still has a lot of punch in it and that is because of the dedication of the director, producers and the cast to deliver a visceral, edge of your seat action movie.

Bringing characters from past movies to Fallout, it feels as if there is a nice continuity, instead of just throwing in an entirely new plot with new characters. Don't worry, if you haven't seen any of the other films (Were you hiding under a rock?) or if you don't remember them, its pretty easy to follow.

Two years after the capture of Solomon Lane (Rogue Nation baddie) his organization known as "The Syndicate", now reformed as "The Apostles" are planning to wreck havoc by using nuclear bombs (among other things). Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) with his team tries to stop their plans and pursues the group from Berlin to Paris, London and Kashmir.

Of course, nothing is ever simple with these missions, especially when you have a Special Activities Operative, August Walker (Henry Cavill), who is instructed by the CIA to basically"babysit".  Loved Cavill's performance here, (yes, with controversial mustache) he is definitely a welcome addition to the cast.

Things also get complicated when Ilsa Faust (the beautiful Rebecca Fergurson), former MI6 from "Rogue Nation" also joins in the fray.

The writing and excellent camera work will make you feel as if you are jumping off a plane in Paris, jumping over buildings in London and being part of a nail biting helicopter chase amidst a stunning mountain terrain.

Without giving anything away, Hunt and Walker do a HALO jump in Paris (one of the best sequences in the film), I literally let out a surprised gasp during this scene. Have you seen behind the scene footage of how hard it was to shoot it? (You should) I was really impressed at the dedication of the team to deliver an authentic scene to its audience by not using any movie magic or tricks. No stunt doubles and green screens, everything was actually done and you will feel it as you watch it. It is definitely a remarkable experience (best felt in the movie house).

Aside form jumping off planes, Ethan Hunt also runs along rooftops in London, this is where he broke his ankle while filming (yup, dedication right there). An intense helicopter chase (yeah, car chases don't cut it anymore) through beautiful yet treacherous mountain terrain will also keep you at the edge of your seat.

Fallout, isn't just all fist fights, chases and action sequences. The mind games are pretty clever too. Plus, I also appreciated the added humor, which did not feel forced at all. There were a number of times in the film, where Ethan would find himself in a very silly situation, because you know in real life just because you are a spy, not everything will work out according to plan.

9/10 - easily the best Mission Impossible film to date. Tom Cruise delivers an unforgettable thrilling action, spy film that everyone will be talking about for some time. (cue the music).

Movies: Embracing Diversity In Thrilling YA Movie “The Darkest Minds”

“The Darkest Minds” is set in a very near future society where most of the nation’s children have
perished – victims of a terrible disease. The surviving children are considered to be dangerous Enemies of the State because they possess extraordinary powers and therefore pose a threat to the government. Amandla Stenberg (Hunger Games, Everything Everything) plays Ruby, who escapes from the authorities and teams up with a group of other kids, including Liam, played by Harris Dickinson. They go on the run, using their powers, wits, and friendship to stay alive.

“The whole movie is a quest for this ‘slip kids’ camp,” says producer Shawn Levy. “And for this camp where supposedly kids live free, the character of Clancy [played by Patrick Gibson] is pretty critical because he runs this utopian kind of what could be a ‘Lord Of The Flies’, ‘Maze Runner’, kid-only civilization or outpost, with order, with kindness, with charisma. Travelling on the quest to the slip kids camp with Ruby and Liam are two other characters: Zu, played by Miya Cech and Chubs, played by Skylan Brooks.

“Zu is a nine, ten-year-old girl and Miya is a revelation – she’s this young actress at an age where you rarely find a great actress,” says Levy. “When Miya auditioned, her face was so expressive.  Her character doesn’t talk for ninety-five percent of the movie and that’s not easy.  So you need someone who is articulate without words.  And Miya, who is also crazily professional for such a young age, brings a heart achingly expressive quality to the character of Zu, who we learn, over the course of the movie, has been through real trauma – way more trauma than someone that age should ever have to go through.”

Movies: Tom Cruise Rides Higher Than Ever In “Mission: Impossible - Fallout”

Over the past two decades, Tom Cruise has produced, starred in and performed in the most mind-blowing stunts in the Mission: Impossible films, a global cultural phenomenon that has grossed more than $2.8 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful franchises in movie history.

Now he returns for a sixth film in his role as Impossible Missions Force (IMF) team leader Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Fallout (in Philippine cinemas July 25).

According to Cruise, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is a culmination of all of the previous films in the series. “You’re going to see characters brought back and storylines brought to a conclusion,” he says. “At the beginning of the film, the book The Odyssey was chosen for a very specific reason. The journey my character, Ethan Hunt, and his team go through is an odyssey inspired by and reflective of that story. It’s an epic personal tale, and there are enormous emotional stakes for the characters.”

Movies: Superhero Films Gets Skewered When “Teen Titans Go! To The Movies”

When teeny Teen Titan Robin learns that the story of Batman’s greatest ally and best friend in the whole world is coming to the big screen, and it is not about him—and that Hollywood is making movies about every superhero but him—he declares, “It’s time they make one about me!”

But then he’s hit with the cold, hard truth: Hollywood only makes movies about real superheroes.  “Why don’t they take us seriously?” the boy wonders.

Maybe because a superhero has to save more than…room for dessert?

Movies: Lily James Channels Meryl Streep In “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”

When it came to casting the part of Young Donna in Universal Pictures’ new romantic musical, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the filmmakers knew whomever they chose would have some very big overalls to fill.

Lily James, known for her astonishing work in films from Baby Driver and Cinderella to her star-making turn in Downton Abbey, takes the character to an unexpected level. “Lily embodied the spirit of Donna; she was minxy and perfect to play her,” raves producer Judy Craymer. “I know she had a long hard think before taking the role because playing a younger Meryl Streep is a challenge for any actress, but she immersed herself in the idea. This was a chance to work on a beloved musical, and Lily has a pure, beautiful voice.”

While it was of course important to the filmmaking team that their Young Donna remind audiences quite a bit of the Donna we know and love, mirror image was never crucial to the production. Producer Gary Goetzman explains just what James accomplishes: “Lily transcends whether you think she looks exactly like Meryl or doesn’t; that doesn’t matter. She brings that young Meryl character in such a strong, aggressive and beautifully acted way.” He echoes Craymer, raving: “She’s a tour-de-force, and what a singing voice. She is a fabulous actor.”

Movies: Bringing The Costumes To Life On “Ant-Man And The Wasp”

Clothes may make the man, but an extraordinary suit makes for a spectacular Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and The Wasp.” These two unique heroes need very unique suits—shrinking and growing means movability is a factor—and it needs to look good no matter what size realm you reside in.

Head of Specialty Costume Ivo Coveney worked on the first Marvel Studios’ “Ant Man,” and found the experience so rewarding, he was happy to come back for “Ant-man and The Wasp.”

The very first Ant-Man suit was very simple noting the feel of a motorcycle suit with futuristic elements. “Now when you look at the helmet, it’s just refined…. It’s a massive change between what we did on the first one to ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ And then from ‘Civil War’ to this; it’s just refinements and cleaned up and, and honing down,” described Coveney about how they came to the fine-tuned version for “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”

Movies: Witness The Meteoric Rise Of A Legend In “Bohemian Rhapsody” Full Trailer Reveal

Brace for a rocking good time and sing your hearts out as the full trailer of “Bohemian Rhapsody” drops today on 20th Century Fox’s Youtube and Facebook pages.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is the story of how Freddie Mercury and his fellow band members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon formed Queen – one of the most iconic rock groups of all time. The film follows Queen as they produce hit after hit, topping the charts while constantly evolving their sound. Through disparate songs like Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, We Will Rock You and countless others, the band reaches unparalleled success and Freddie becomes one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet.

Behind that veil of success, however, Freddie struggles to reconcile his duality. Forever trying to determine where he fits in the world as a Parsi immigrant from Zanzibar coming to terms with a sexuality even he can’t define in a culture bound by stereotypes and expectations. Freddie dares to defy them all but also pays a price. Lured into excess and surrounded by darker influences, Freddie shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. What becomes an attempt to redefine himself as a solo artist, ends in disappointment and further isolation.

Pulling himself up from personal strife one more time to overcome the odds, the band puts on one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” opens in Philippine cinemas nationwide on October 31 from 20th Century Fox.
