Review: Titans

Review  written by: Melisa Hontiveros

I have been a fan of the Teen Titans ever since I was in Grade 6 watching their 2003 TV series. Their perfect blend of serious and playful tones made the show popular and inspiring to our generation of viewers, with fans still clamoring for its continuation fifteen years later. (Yes, it’s been that long.) Since then, I’ve loved all of the iterations of these beloved characters, whether it be in TV, movies and comics (give or take a few comic book runs.) Understandably, I have been very excited for the live-action adaptation of my favorite heroes and I would like to share that excitement to all of you through a non-spoiler first season review of Titans. After all, who better to write a review than a fan of the main characters of our story?

Let’s start with a bit of background on how the live-action adaptation came into fruition. Since 2014, there have already been reports of a Titans TV show being developed under the TNT network. Now four years later, we find the show has become a reality under the DC Universe streaming service. So far it has only been available exclusively in the United States but it will be available globally on Netflix starting January 11.

About “Aquaman”

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role.  The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

The film also stars Amber Heard (“Justice League,” “Magic Mike XXL”) as Mera, a fierce warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (“Platoon,” “Spider-Man 2”) as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson (“The Conjuring” films, “Watchmen”) as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables” films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Netflix’s “The Get Down”) as the vengeful Black Manta; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” “Lion”) as Arthur’s mom, Atlanna; as well as Ludi Lin (“Power Rangers”) as Captain Murk, Atlantean Commando; and Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones,” “Green Lantern”) as Arthur’s dad, Tom Curry.

Wan directs from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (“The Conjuring 2”) and Will Beall (“Gangster Squad,” TV’s “Training Day”), story by Geoff Johns & James Wan and Will Beall, based on characters from DC, Aquaman created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.  The film is produced by Peter Safran and Rob Cowan, with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada serving as executive producers.

Wan’s team behind the scenes includes such frequent collaborators as Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (“The Conjuring 2,” “Forrest Gump”), his five-time editor Kirk Morri (“The Conjuring” films, “Furious 7,” the “Insidious” films), and production designer Bill Brzeski (“Furious 7”).  They are joined by costume designer Kym Barrett (“The Matrix” trilogy, “The Amazing Spider-Man”) and composer Rupert Gregson-Williams (“Wonder Woman”).

Warner Bros. Pictures Presents a Safran Company Production, a James Wan Film, “Aquaman.”

The film is set to hit Philippine cinemas December 13, in 3D and 2D and IMAX, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Heroes Run takes on Batman V Superman on April 9

I have never been the sporty or athletic type of girl, often preferring a good boom or a movie instead of running around with a racket, or sweating it out in the gym. Which is why it's good that I always have the option of running around the village, you don't have to think of anything, just have music and run! It's a good go-to-exercise whenever I feel I'm getting on the chubby side :p

Last year's World of DC Fun Run was such a great event, I'm really happy that it's coming back this year -but with a fun and specified...market you would say.

In time with the highly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice movie (in cinemas, March 26) Heroes Run will have runners choosing a side- Batman or Superman? Of course, you can be neutral and just go Wonder Woman right? :)

The beautiful singlets, as you can see above features a more movie-accurate design. Instant abs for those who will be going Batman or Superman and instant glamour for those who will be choosing Wonder Woman!

Over 70 Years Since Her Debut - Production Begins on WONDER WOMAN Film

First Teaser Photo from The Wonder Woman Feature Film

In a time where Superhero films are largely dominated by male leads, one woman rises to claim the long awaited & much coveted feature for a female led super hero movie, or should I say super heroine?

BURBANK, CA, November 21, 2015 – Principal photography is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman feature film, the highly anticipated action adventure from director Patty Jenkins (“Monster,” AMC’s “The Killing”), starring Gal Gadot ❤️❤️❤️ (the “Fast & Furious” movies) in the role of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. The character will make her big screen debut this spring in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but the new film will mark her first time headlining a feature; over seventy years since her debut in All Star Comics #8 which was came out in December 1941.

Aside from being a heroine fighting for justice, love and peace, over the years Wonder Woman has also become a symbol of gender equality, often being the face and name for equality movements. Did you also know that Wonder Woman has her own make-up collection with MAC? (As a girl, I feel it is important to mention this). It came out in a 2011 Spring Collection & features a vintage Wonder Woman look, inspired from the comics.

Gal Gadot is a Wonder Woman herself; in 2004 she won the Miss Israeli title and went on to represent her country at the 2004 Miss Universe Beauty pageant. She served for two years as a soldier in the Israeli forces and is a fan of motorcycles & owns a black 2006 Ducati Monster - S2R. Moviegoers may know her as Giselle in 'The Fast & Furious' movies.

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice

The Wonder Woman feature film also stars Chris Pine (the “Star Trek” films) as Captain Steve Trevor, Robin Wright (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”), Danny Huston (“Clash of the Titans,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), David Thewlis (the “Harry Potter” films), Ewen Bremner (“Exodus: Gods and Kings”), Saïd Taghmaoui (“American Hustle”), Elena Anaya (“The Skin I Live In”) and Lucy Davis (“Shaun of the Dead”).

The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder, with Richard Suckle, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Rebecca Roven serving as executive producers.

Joining Jenkins behind the camera are director of photography Matthew Jensen (“Chronicle,” “Fantastic Four,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (“Amélie,” “A Very Long Engagement,” “Pan”), and Oscar-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” “V for Vendetta”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Topsy-Turvy”).

Principal photography will take place on location in the UK, France and Italy.

Set to open in 2017, the Wonder Woman feature film is based on characters created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Super Hero for a day at the World of DC All Star Fun Run

And they're off! An estimated 11,000 participants joined The League at the World of DC: All Star Fun Run

Last Saturday, April 18, 2015, the Philippines became the only South Asian country to participate in a global effort to gather the most number of people dressed as characters from the D.C. Universe. I participated in this collective effort by joining the World of DC All Star a Fun Run. During this event; which is the first of it's kind, runners get to wear singlets of their favorite superhero. The singlet also comes with an additional costume piece (masks for Batman, The Flash and Green Lantern, a head band for Wonder Woman and a cape for Superman). I decided to choose Superman (because I can pass for a Super Girl) I mean how many times do you get to run around with a cape without being chased by orderlies?

This was actually my first time to join a fun run. You would most likely find me behind a book or in front of the TV instead of doing any physical activity that would require me to be outdoors. In preparation for the event, my sister and I ran on Monday mornings, much to the approval of our mom.

This Super Family are ready to take over the Fun Run

If you follow me on social media I have been posting a lot about the event and you can say that my excitement was even doubled since it was my first run. So just imagine my surprise at the overwhelming number of participants that came for the event. A quick stop at Mc Donald's at 4AM already reveled our fellow runners in their super hero singlets.

My sister and I were pleasantly surprised to see children joining the race as well! Not only were the kids dressed in the official race singlets provided but some of them were even in full costume! We were cooing and pointing out how cute the kids were. Speaking of cute - even pets came to the fun run dressed in costume! I think that was the first time I ever saw Superdog :)

Check out this 'super' man's best friend :)

As the sun rose over Manila bay, super heroes of all shapes and sizes (children in costume were holding the hands of their parents who were of course in costume too), prepared for the gun start and went along their own pace, some with family, some with friends. It was a super fun run, so to speak. :)

An estimated 11,000 runners joined the event, our friends for the Justice League PH were also present, with The Flash even running the 3k in full costume :)

I really hope there will be another one next year, it was great to see everyone come out and become a hero for a day, maybe they can future more characters for next year :)

Batwoman Bishoujo Statue by Kotobukiya

Released in January 2015 the Batwoman Kotobukiya statue comes with two portraits, with and without Kate Kane's mask and wig and strands.

It stands about 25cm tall or at a 1/7 scale.

My sister is actually the owner of this beautiful statue. Becoming the avid toy collector herself, she's always been a big fan of the Batman franchise.

She pre-ordered this beauty from Big Boys Toystore and she immediately wanted us to do a photoshoot :)

I've always wanted to own a Kotobukiya statue. The bishoujo take on our favorite Marvel and DC heroines just turns my knees into jelly - look at her! So beautiful!

While the budget has me confined to buying one Funko Pop at time, maybe in the near future I'd a proud owner of a Kotobukiya figure :)

On the technical side: Flash head(Canon 430 EXII) was positioned left of the camera pointed directly on the right side of the statue. White styrofoam board was positioned camera right allowing light from the flash to bounce back to the opposite side of the statue. All of these were shot on white cartolina. As for exposure, most of the time I've exposed only the flash and killed ambient light to get the grey effect of the background.

World Of DC Comics: All Star Fun Run

I've never been much if a runner or an athlete (I'm more of the sit in bed-read and watch TV type) much to the dismay of my mom who insists I've been gaining weight.

Now I never thought I'd get into the whole "fun run" thing despite all the gags and gimmicks (live music in the background while you run, colored smoke, or even zombies) I would have to say that DC Comics - All Star Run is making me (get my butt out of the couch) me change my mind.

The very first of its kind, World Of DC Comics - All Star Fun Run promises to take you where no Fun Run has before, by letting you be your favorite super hero for a whole run! Yes! You read that right you get to emulate your favorite DC Superhero like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman or ideally The Flash! (nudge-nudge-wink-wink)  You can be super and get that extra boost to help you finish the fun-run in beautifully made and licensed singlets!

These awesome singlets alone has me wanting to run along side my favorite super heroes as we have some cosplayers who will actually run in FULL COSTUME - wouldn't that be a sight to see ?

The very first of its event in Asia, The World of DC Comics All Star - Fun Run also coincides with the DC Comics' 80th Anniversary. So what better way to celebrate than to have fun and get fit with your favorite DC heroes!
