In "Our Brand Is Crisis" audiences are taken into the 'belly of the beast', into the heart of one of the dirtiest games ever played-politics and elections.
I've always had an uneasy and dissatisfied feeling around campaign period. Singing candidates, dirty campaigns, cheesy advertisements, celebrity endorsers, vote buying, you name it! It all leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Yet, no matter how I may dislike election period or (okay-I'll be specific here) our politics. You can't deny that politics can really be interesting. Most especially when it's not your taxpayer's money that dissapears.
Oscar winner, Sandra Bullock plays Jane 'Calamity' Bodine, a former political strategiest who is asked to come back to 'the ring' to help an unpopular Bolivian Presidential Candidate. The only way that Jane is convinced to go back to the fray is when she finds out that her bitter rival Pat Candy played by Oscar Winner Billy Bob Thornton has been hired by the opposition.
For these two rivals, there is nothing below the belt and pretty soon the mud slinging begins. It's interesting to find out what goes behind-the-scenes in a political campaign, I learned a lot of things like what a 'negative campaign' is and how good photoshop skills can be a secret weapon.
Despite the battle to become popular in the polls, Jane learns that this election actually means something to a poverty-stricken country (well duh!) and maybe 'the Yankees' should just mind their business.
The film, has its surprising fun and hilarious moments, which may have overshadowed the deeper underlying themes that the movie could have tackled. It really depends on how you would look at it, it's either you enjoy the comedic scenes too much that you forget what the movie is also trying to say. Or, you get caught up with wanting more Politcal Science, Worldwide Economics and Issues on Morality that you don't get to enjoy the movie. Maybe, wanting more out of it.
I for one, enjoyed the film. I've always been a glass half full kind of person and I took the best things that the movie had to offer. It was fun and insightful at the same time. It is called a political satire for a reason, and films like these you should always take with a grain of salt.
