"Our Brand is Crisis" Movie Review

In "Our Brand Is Crisis" audiences are taken into the 'belly of the beast', into the heart of one of the dirtiest games ever played-politics and elections.

I've always had an uneasy and dissatisfied feeling around campaign period. Singing candidates, dirty campaigns, cheesy advertisements, celebrity endorsers, vote buying, you name it! It all leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yet, no matter how I may dislike election period or (okay-I'll be specific here) our politics. You can't deny that politics can really be interesting. Most especially when it's not your taxpayer's money that dissapears.

Oscar winner, Sandra Bullock plays Jane 'Calamity' Bodine, a former political strategiest who is asked to come back to 'the ring' to help an unpopular Bolivian Presidential Candidate. The only way that Jane is convinced to go back to the fray is when she finds out that her bitter rival Pat Candy played by Oscar Winner Billy Bob Thornton has been hired by the opposition.

For these two rivals, there is nothing below the belt and pretty soon the mud slinging begins. It's interesting to find out what goes behind-the-scenes in a political campaign, I learned a lot of things like what a 'negative campaign' is and how good photoshop skills can be a secret weapon.

Despite the battle to become popular in the polls, Jane learns that this election actually means something to a poverty-stricken country (well duh!) and maybe 'the Yankees' should just mind their business.

The film, has its surprising fun and hilarious moments, which may have overshadowed the deeper underlying themes that the movie could have tackled. It really depends on how you would look at it, it's either you enjoy the comedic scenes too much that you forget what the movie is also trying to say. Or, you get caught up with wanting more Politcal Science, Worldwide Economics and Issues on Morality that you don't get to enjoy the movie. Maybe, wanting more out of it.

I for one, enjoyed the film. I've always been a glass half full kind of person and I took the best things that the movie had to offer. It was fun and insightful at the same time. It is called a political satire for a reason, and films like these you should always take with a grain of salt.

7/10 ⭐️s "Our Brand Is Crisis" opens across the Philippines on Jan. 13, 2016, “Our Brand is Crisis” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Our Brand Is Crisis: What Really Goes Down in a Political Campaign

The National Elections are coming up and unfortunately I still feel the same as I have about our politics and elections, mainly that it's a sham and one whole big circus, so it's nice interesting to see what really goes down in a Politcal campaign from a different perspective.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ new satirical comedy “Our Brand is Crisis” starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton takes a timely look at the high-stakes gamesmanship behind the scenes of a presidential campaign, seen through the eyes and actions of the strategists-for-hire who are pulling the strings.  The film could not have come at a timelier moment for the Philippines which is currently in the maelstrom of election madness.

Bringing audiences into the belly of the beast with a fictional story as relevant as today’s news cycle, “Our Brand is Crisis” explores the often outrageous and unconscionable lengths to which some people will go in their competitive zeal to get the job done and cross the finish line ahead of the other guy.

“So much of politics and the election process is absurd, from big business to the media circus, the sound bites and the haircuts,” says director David Gordon Green.  Addressing some of the film’s tonal facets, he adds, “Politics has become entertainment and marketing.  That’s where the movie has some fun and a sense of humor, in exposing that absurdity, which gives the story its energy and momentum even as the characters are facing some difficult issues that we definitely don’t tiptoe around.”

As the story opens, the infamous campaign fixer Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock) is in seclusion, following a tragically unsuccessful run that left her more shattered than she can admit.  She’s not quite ready to return to the fray when a former associate comes knocking in hopes that Jane can help turn things around for a hugely unpopular presidential candidate in Bolivia, named Castillo.  She declines. But when Jane learns that her bitter rival Pat Candy has been hired by the opposing party, her competitive nature kicks in.  Having lost to Pat more than once before, this could be her chance to even the score.

The depth of the story and the challenges faced by their lead character was what attracted producers Heslov and Clooney.  “With some films the tone is very straightforward.  Oddly enough, we rarely make those films,” Heslov says.  “We usually find ones where the tone is on the precipice and can go several ways.  This film is darkly funny, and also has moments of great seriousness, and there are underlying issues worthy of real thought.”

While fictional in both its characters and story, “Our Brand is Crisis” was inspired by true events depicted in the 2005 documentary of the same name from writer/director Rachel Boynton, which chronicles the real-life presidential campaign of Bolivia’s Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada.  “It was inspiring on every level,” notes Bullock, “but we had to let it go and create our own story.”

“Working on this project only confirmed what I always thought existed in the political world,” says Bullock.   But at the same time, she observes, “The film is not really as much about politics as it is about people and what drives them.  It’s set in the tense, ticking-clock world of a political election and you get caught up in what’s going to happen next but to me it’s more about which of these people are going to do the right thing, and what that means.  You see the comedy and the absurdity, the pain and chaos that is often caused by people who just want to win and you think, if it was you, would you be strong enough to get off the carousel?”

Another reason why I'm excited about the film? It's also produced by the Academy Award winning Producers of 'Argo' Grant Hasbro and George Clooney, yes, that George Clooney.
