Movie Review: Despicable Me 3
Before catching the press screening of "Despicable Me 3" I suddenly remembered that we saw the first movie as an Anniversary date when we hit the 5th year (or was it the 6th year?) of our relationship. We are currently on our 12th year (yes, we still celebrate our boyfriend/girlfriend anniversary).
I remember not expecting much from the first film but ending up loving it so much. Gru (Steve Carell) has grown so much as a character, probably the most in an animated character in recent years. We've seen him shed his bad guy persona and become a regular good guy. It's cute to see how he struggles with between being good and being bad, when we all know he's really a good guy inside, thanks to the influence of the girls of course.
So with Gru, officially being an agent for the Anti Villain League, being a husband to Lucy and a full time dad to Margo, Edith and Agnes, what is left for our favorite bald good/bad guy? Well "Despicable Me 3" answers that with an 80's has been child actor for an arch nemesis and a long lost brother!
Okay. I will have to admit that I'm not a big fan of the whole "long lost twin brother" plot - I honestly think its a bit corny (and did I mention that he's also really rich and has a head full of hair (much to Gru's disappointment). Dru wants to get in touch with his inner villain and solicits the help of his twin brother, after a failed attempt to catch his shoulder pad wearing nemesis, Balthazar Bratt, Gru is desperate for any kind of help, even if it means having his rather inexperienced brother along.
What I am a super fan about the film is Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker)! He is my favorite villain ever! #DanceFight !!! I think he is a good addition to the movie, giving that 80's nostalgia for parents who will be accompanying their kids to see the movie. The movie's heavily 80's inspired music is so bad (Micheal Jackson) -that its good! Currently listening to the songs right now. Moms and Dads can tell their kids they once danced to those tunes, a long time ago :P Its also a good way to get your kids a crash course in the 80's.
Of course a "Despicable Me" movie, will not be complete without those crazy minions and I'm glad that this crazy bunch did not steal the thunder of Gru and his family as they were gracious supporting actors, who yes, had their own share of crazy adventures but still let Gru be the star of the show!
I appreciated how the film also featured conflicts from Lucy and the girls, Lucy coming to terms with becoming a mom (a mom who can kick ass by the way) and Agnes' little own unicorn adventure. I love how they were also given some screen time and how these were resolved in the story as well.
There is a beautiful lesson in the movie about expectations, disappointments and making the most of what is given to us, I don't want to spoil anything but its nice to have a word with your kids and discuss it for a bit as a take away, who knows, sometimes even adults like us need to be reminded of this at times and when you get to spend family time, laughing out loud and learning an important lesson at the same time, then its a win-win for everyone :)
6.5 out of 10 - "Despicable Me 3" is now showing!

Movies: “Despicable Me 3” Super-Villain Is Former '80s Child Star
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's new comedy adventure Despicable Me 3 features a new addition to the franchise: Balthazar Bratt, a formidable super-villain who has been plotting to destroy Hollywood after his TV show was canceled.
Once mocked and shunned after his TV series was canceled—due to his quick onset of puberty—Bratt has become obsessed with everything from his glory days. Now embodying his former role’s villainous traits, Bratt surrounds himself with everything ’80s—re-creating the show’s gadgets and vehicles for plotting his revenge.
In classic Illumination fashion, the character is just as defined by his Machiavellian schemes as he is his ridiculousness. “Balthazar Bratt has taken on this child-actor persona as his villain persona,” says cast member Steve Carell who provides the voices of brothers Gru and Dru. “There is also a silly madness to him, and he uses ’80s components as a part of his villainy. The bubble gum he chews become an extremely effective weapon, he dresses in a purple outfit with padded shoulders and parachute pants, and he dispatches people with dance fights.”
