Movie Review: Beauty And The Beast

Going into this movie review means bringing along a part of my childhood, it can't be helped seeing as "Beauty and the Beast" was a big, big part of "Preschool Ica's" life. I had "Beauty and the Beast" lunchbox, sleeping bag etc! I sketched Belle a hundred times on whatever piece of paper I could get my hands on. I've memorized all the songs and all the dialogue in the film. Throw me a line or a verse from the original movie and there's a good chance that I can tell you what comes next.

And so, it is with this that I inform you, dear reader that there will be a lot of comparisons between the original animated movie to the 2017 live action remake.

As per usual, I will still be discussing my insights and thoughts on the film, and yes, I will even be talking about 'that' "controversy".

First of all, let me go ahead and say that I loved Bill Condon's take on the animated classic with a more logical, historically accurate and relevant remake. I was pleasantly happy and surprised that a lot of loopholes from the original 1991 film were addressed.

For Example:

1. When the wolves leave Belle and an injured Beast- how does Belle carry Beast onto Philippe and go back to the castle?

2. How is it that the villagers don't know about castle? "And all who live there" -its not like the castle is far away?

Well, I'm glad to say that all these (and more) are answered in the film and I just loved it!

Gaston is a war veteran (he protected the town from Portuguese marauders in 1740, which is why he is somewhat of a celebrity and he also possibly has PTSD. Source here.)

A plague is mentioned is mentioned in passing, all these little bits of added information which places the story in a more realistic perspective just makes the film even more enjoyable, especially for a history geek like me. The costumes and make up is also more periodic and historically accurate. (Bonus)

We also get a sneak peek of just how "spoiled, selfish and unkind" the prince is, before he is turned into a Beast- (he would tax the villagers for his lavish parties and pretty things.) The audience also gets to understand the Beast more-why did he grow up to be a spoiled prince?

The enchanted staff of the castle castle is also given a brighter spotlight - do they hate the Beast for being "collateral damage" to his punishment?

We also see that Lumiere and the gang have more to lose if the last petal were to fall.

I think my heart broke for these guys and I could probably attribute 3 tears to one scene with these lovable characters.

The film also expounds on women empowerment - "Its not right for women to read, soon she starts getting ideas and thinking". The villagers think that Belle is odd because she reads, the film expounds on this more as they also discuss education and literacy. I don't know if those who saw film noticed that little boys went to school while little girls did the laundry.

Also, as Gaston is trying to woo Belle into marrying him he points out that when a girl's father dies, she becomes a spinster, she can't work and must beg for food to eat. (Wow. Talk about being dependent on men.)

Let's move on to Production, (more on "dissecting" the movie later on). Its rare for an audience to applaud in the middle of the film but that #BeOurGuest sequence was magical to say the least, it was a musical spectacle worthy to be seen in the glory of the cinema.

Kudos to Ewan McGregor's impressive performance of the hilarious candelabra.

I would have to say that another musical number worth praising is an updated (with some new stanzas) is "Gaston" which features more singing and more dancing from an incredibly talented cast. Luke Evans as the former Army Captain is just spot on! He looks the part, acts the part and boy does he sing the part! He can reach those notes. I know that Emma Watson is not really a singer but Paul and I couldn't  help but notice that she had to sing from a lower range from the original Paige O'Hara and if you grew up singing those songs, there is a satisfaction in just hitting those high notes. (Beauty and the Beast Karaoke Night anyone?).

Another update in the film that I appreciated is that the story gives time to show that Beast and Belle enjoy each other's company, they enjoy talking about books, that they have a shared interest. We all know that Belle is a bookworm and with the Beast's "expensive education" it would only be natural that they can share a conversation about Shakespeare.

Now, lets talk about that "gay character controversy"  it might not have made much of a impact in our generally "open" country but before the movie was released, a statement from Director Bill Condon about LeFou being gay was met with backlash, resulting to a drive in theater Alabama refusing to screen the film and Malaysia also doing the same

Honestly, all of this is just a big overreaction and these people don't know what they're missing. This gay take on LeFou is very subtle and Josh Gad's portrayal is done very well. Yes, his character is devoted to Gaston but we must understand that they were together in the war and was there for all of his heroic moments, these two go way back. We all know that Gaston is a brute and does not treat his loyal friend very well, this is also the same in the animated movie, when he leaves LeFou in the snow as "look out".

Well its also the same in the live action version, Gaston is also mean to LeFou, using him for his own gain, now its up to this new LeFou to decide if he will stand up for it and if he will be able to see Gaston for what he truly is and standing up to someone who doesn't treat us right (even if we do like them) is something we can all learn.

Those people who have decided not to see the film because of the character are missing a lot. Josh Gad's LeFou is fun and fresh, devoted to a fault yet audiences will love him for sure!

Now, lets go to some  bits I was not really a big fan of and this is just me nitpicking.

The transformation scene when (spoiler) the Beast turns back into a Prince was a little underwhelming, I mean, the original was such an iconic scene, even getting a spoof from the first "Shrek" movie.

There were also some lines from Beast in the original that I would have wanted to see in the film, when he says: "Then go ahead and starve!" Its such a fun line (and I think the delivery also has something to do with it) -that there's even a meme for it.

I saw this meme in a list of things that parents want to tell their children :P

This one filed under "When the kids don't want to eat their food".

I also preferred the "Get Out" line over (what was in the movie, won't say it on account of spoilers).

Well, what else can I say? The husband has already pointed out that I've spent longer on this review than normal and its because there are just so many things to talk about and I can't wait for friends to see it so we can get lost in discussion on the film.

9/10 - invitation for "Beauty and the Beast Karaoke Night" is still open! The film is already showing in cinemas!

MOVIES: TALKING HOUSEHOLD OBJECTS ARE SCENE-STEALERS IN “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

A gentlemanly candelabra and a fastidious mantel clock. These are just two of the memorable characters in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, specifically, the enchanted household objects who can now speak as a result of the spell that transformed their master, a young Prince, into a Beast.

The household objects are the former members of the castle’s staff, including: Lumière (Ewan McGregor), a candelabra; Cogsworth (Ian McKellen), a mantel clock; Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson), a teapot; Madame de Garderobe (Audra McDonald), a wardrobe; Plumette (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a feather duster; and Maestro Cadenza (Stanley Tucci), a harpsichord. Hopeful that Belle (Emma Watson) may finally be the one to capture the heart of the Beast (Dan Stevens), they watch and wait for any signs of true love that will break the curse.

Two-time Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge) is Lumière, the Prince’s proper French valet turned candelabra. Frequently at odds with Cogsworth and besotted with Plumette, it is Lumière who sings the show’s most extravagant musical number, “Be Our Guest.” The actor was unfamiliar with the song when he first arrived on set, but quickly became a fan, delivering a performance that would have made Maurice Chevalier proud.

MOVIES: DAN STEVENS IS A PRINCE TRANSFORMED BY A CURSE IN “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

Attaining global stardom and acclaim for his performance as the dashing Matthew Crawley in the Golden Globe®-winning drama Downton Abbey, Dan Stevens now stars in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, opposite Emma Watson’s Belle.

The British thespian plays the Beast, a spoiled and arrogant Prince transformed by the curse of an enchantress.

Of particular importance to the filmmakers was determining the fine line between man and beast, as there are moments when rage overwhelms the character and makes him more beastly, yet there are other times when he is quite gentle.

“[Director] Bill Condon and I spent a lot of time talking about how we could add some nuances to my character to make him more dimensional than the Beast from the animated film,” says Stevens. “It was quite interesting, trying to find those little human beats that would make him less animalistic and more a human trapped inside this creature.”

MOVIES: EMMA WATSON CAPTURES YOUR HEART AS BELLE IN “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

Known to global audiences as the spunky and smart wizard Hermione in the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson is now poised to be fondly remembered as Belle, the shrewd villager who yearns for adventure, in the live-action retelling of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

For over a decade, the British actress has charmed audiences playing the quick-witted and tenacious Hogwarts student in the Potter films and in films including The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah and The Bling Ring. In addition, she has a highly-visible role as a human rights activist and global goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, something which has become her life’s calling.

Of all the female characters in all the Disney films, she has always been drawn to – and most identifies with – Belle.

MOVIES: GET RE-AQUAINTED WITH THE BELOVED CHARACTERS OF “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

With barely three weeks before Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast bows on the big screen, the studio has released the official descriptions of the beloved fairy tale's characters.

And when searching for talent to bring the beloved animated characters to life on screen, the filmmakers canvassed the worlds of film, television, music and theatre to find the performers best suited for each role.

BELLE (Emma Watson) is a bright and spirited young woman who dreams of adventure, romance and a world far beyond the confines of her French village. Fiercely independent and keeping to herself for the most part, Belle wants nothing to do with the town’s arrogant and boorish rogue Gaston, who relentlessly pursues her. When her father is imprisoned in the castle of a hideous Beast, Belle trades her own freedom for his and quickly befriends the former staff who have become household objects as result of a curse placed on the castle. The Beast, while surly and ill-mannered, can be generous and chivalrous and knows how to make her laugh, and Belle soon begins to sense the kind heart of the Prince within.

THE BEAST (Dan Stevens). Once a dashing young Prince who had grown to become cruel and self-absorbed before being transformed by an enchantress into a hideous Beast, he is trapped in the castle until he can learn to love another and be worthy of their love in return, thus breaking the curse. When the Beast catches Maurice trespassing and takes him prisoner, his beautiful and headstrong daughter Belle takes his place, and the Beast develops feelings for her, slowly beginning to come back to life.

GASTON (Luke Evans) is the arrogant and shallow villager intent on marrying Belle. A former War hero, he holds court in the village tavern and has every eligible woman in town wrapped around his finger. Smitten with Belle, who is strong-willed and impervious to his charms, Gaston becomes consumed by rejection and jealousy and leads a mob of villagers to the Beast’s castle to rescue Belle and kill the Beast.

LEFOU (Josh Gad), Gaston’s sidekick, is not the brightest bulb in the box. He worships Gaston, who has no regard for him whatsoever and makes him the brunt of his jokes, but soon comes to realize that beneath Gaston’s handsome exterior lays a heart that is much darker.

MAURICE (Kevin Kline), Belle’s father, is a reclusive artist who specializes in beautiful one-of-a-kind music boxes, which to Belle represent the world beyond the confines of Villeneuve but to Maurice are a way to protect his daughter while preserving perfect memories from his past. When Maurice stumbles upon the Beast’s castle and is taken prisoner, Belle comes to plead for his release, eventually trading her freedom for his. Now it is up to him to convince the villagers of Belle’s imprisonment and to find a way to set her free.

MOVIES: DIRECTOR BILL CONDON IMBUES MORE REALISM TO “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

The story and characters audiences know and love come to spectacular life in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a live-action adaptation of the studio’s animated classic featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast, including: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Hattie Morahan and Nathan Mack with Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson.

Directed by Bill Condon and based on the 1991 animated film Beauty and the Beast, the screenplay is written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Alan Menken provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman as well as three new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice.

The studio felt an adaptation of the story of a kindhearted maiden and her beastly prince had the potential to enchant audiences once again, but when the studio pitched the idea to Bill Condon, his initial fear was remaking something that is flawless as is. “I consider the 1991 film to be a perfect movie,” Condon says. “When the film was released it was groundbreaking, in the way the story was told and with that incredible score from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, so I initially did not want to go near it.”

Movies + Music: CELINE DION TO PERFORM ORIGINAL SONG “HOW DOES A MOMENT LAST FOREVER” FOR DISNEY’S “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST"

BURBANK, Calif. (Jan. 19, 2017) – Five-time GRAMMY® winning and best-selling recording artist Celine Dion will perform an all-new original song, “How Does A Moment Last Forever,” for Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast.” The song will also be included on the film’s soundtrack.

Written by eight-time Oscar®-winning composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin”) and veteran lyricist and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (“The Lion King,” “Evita”), “How Does A Moment Last Forever” is an emotional ballad about holding onto life’s precious moments. Portions of the song are performed throughout the film and interpolated into the underscore before Dion’s full-length version debuts in the film’s custom main-on-end title design.
Says Dion, “Being a part of the original ‘Beauty and the Beast’ was such a magical experience in my life, and I'm truly honored to be a part of this film again.”
President of Music for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Production, Mitchell Leib, approached the artist on behalf of the project with the idea of recording one of the three new songs written for the film. “Celine was the unanimous choice of the filmmakers and studio to perform this song,” says Leib, “And everyone involved with the film is thrilled she agreed to be part of this new live-action adaptation.”

Dion originally performed the duet “Beauty and the Beast” – featuring Menken’s haunting melody and two-time Oscar-winner Howard Ashman’s unforgettable lyrics – with Peabo Bryson for the animated film. The song became an instant classic and went on to receive an Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and three GRAMMY Awards.
Menken also provides the film score along with new recordings of the classic songs from the animated film written by himself and Ashman. The original motion picture soundtrack will be released by Walt Disney Records on March 10, 2017.

Movie News: ARIANA GRANDE, JOHN LEGEND TO PERFORM “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST” THEME SONG

GRAMMY nominated and multi-platinum selling artist Ariana Grande and 10-time GRAMMY, Oscar®-winning and multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter/ musician John Legend are set to perform the Oscar and GRAMMY-winning duet “Beauty and the Beast” as the title track for Disney’s upcoming soundtrack to the live-action film adaptation “Beauty and the Beast.” The song will also be featured in the film.

The enchanting ballad, originally performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson featuring eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken’s beautiful melody and two-time Oscar-winner Howard Ashman’s unforgettable lyrics, received an Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and GRAMMY Award, among other accolades, upon its release in 1991.

The new rendition of the classic song is produced by GRAMMY-winning veteran Ron Fair, whose music career spans 37 years as a major-label record company leader and accomplished producer, arranger, recording engineer and musical director. Fair was brought in to produce by Disney’s president of Music & Soundtracks, Mitchell Leib, who also brought Grande and Legend to the project. The history of collaboration between Leib and Fair in film music goes back to the highly-successful “Pretty Woman” soundtrack. “Ron was the first and only choice to make this particular record,” says Leib. “No one is a better vocal producer and he also has a great understanding of the filmmaking dynamic.”

Fair’s recordings have won six GRAMMY Awards and have been nominated 18 times. Fair discovered and shepherded Christina Aguilera, selling over 50 million albums and winning numerous GRAMMY Awards. He A&R’d Aguilera’s first five albums and championed the Black Eyed Peas to 27 million albums, 4 number-ones and multiple GRAMMY wins, as well as co-producing and arranging the strings on their global breakthrough # 1 hit “Where is The Love?”

Says Fair, “Stepping into the shoes of an Oscar and GRAMMY Award-winning classic is not small potatoes. But with today’s two greatest plutonium singers – John Legend and Ariana Grande – we are bringing the song back with a new school-old school fresh treatment that shows the soulfulness and power of what a great melody and lyric can inspire.”

The music video will be directed by Dave Meyers, the innovative visionary whose long-time collaborations with major artists like P!nk, Janet Jackson, Ice Cube and Britney Spears have resulted in dozens of award nominations and many wins, including a GRAMMY in 2005 for Best Music Video and 11 MTV Video Music Awards, including one for Katy Perry’s smash hit “Firework.” He recently directed the music video for P!nk’s hit single “Just Like Fire” from the Walt Disney Records soundtrack for “Alice Through The Looking Glass.”

Menken also provides the film score, with new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Ashman.
