Review: Deadpool 2

Can you guess from which 80's movie this was inspired from?

When Deadpool first came out in 2016, it pushed the envelope fpr R-Rated Super Hero films. A gamble, which meant a potential loss of revenue by missing out what a younger audience can bring in. This, in exchange of making the fans happier by staying faithful to a character's story and personality.

Well, needless to say 20th Century Fox's gamble paid off, with the first Deadpool movie earning over $783 million and even beating out other super hero films in box office earnings. It has also become the overall highest-grossing R-rated film.

While the film gained both financial and critical success, its plot was pointed out as being too formulaic and simple. Something which Deadpool 2 has been able to remedy by putting Deadpool right in the middle of the wrath of a Mad Titan--er a time travelling mutant rather, Cab;e, played by Josh Brolin (who also plays Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War), hence the reference. Something which you would surely get a lot of in the movie, as Deadpool mercilessly alludes to every possible superhero and pop culture reference you can think of.

Josh Brolin as Cable.

Definitely BIGGER than its predecessor, "Deadpool 2" brings 'the merc with a mouth' to a CRAZIER adventure as he struggles to find his place while rescuing a young mutant, leading a potential superhero team, all the while fighting off an intense mutant from the future!

Following a more complicated, surprising and unexpected plot than the first film, while still delivering its unique brand of humor and action sequences "Deadpool 2" gives a lot to laugh about and a few (BIG) surprises to enjoy as well

Some jokes and gags may run longer than they should and unfortunately made me a little bit anxious but everything is forgiven in the end, given how bold and daring this reluctant hero has become.

Girl Crush. Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Ryan Reynolds continues to be the charming yet annoying antihero and Josh Brolin was impressive and enjoyable as the gritty and deadpan Cable. Zazie Beetz as Domino is a welcome addition to the team, I wouldn't mind having her powers.

Its rare for sequels to be better than their predecessors but 'Deadpool 2' gets it done, with nothing but the world for him to conquer, you will surely continue to enjoy the guilty pleasures of this antihero.

Leave the kids at home, this one is rated R-16 for a reason.

DEADPOOL Is The Superhero Movie Your Mama Didn't Want You To See

In the past two decades or so, Superhero movies have been a regular in the cinems and when I say 'regular' I mean there is one showing every 3 months or so. Said movie will then dictate what every other kid will be wearing on Halloween and what every party theme will be in the next few months.

Having said this, a formula in these Superhero movies has been created and has the. Subjected these family movies to be the go-to family movie dates whenever they are showing.

Now, I want you to take everything you know about Superhero movies and I want you to throw it out the window, because Deadpool is the Superhero movie your Mama didn't want you to see.

Putting the 'all caps' in ANTI-HERO, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces Operative turned mercenary who has a soft spot for 'the little guy'. Boy (Wade) meets girl (did I forget to mention that this was also a Love Story) or in this case his 'calendar girl' Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and they are perfect for each other, but life always has a way of screwing things up and Wade suddenly falls will with Cancer. In a desperate attempt to get cured, Wade joins the same Mutant Program which created Wolverine aaaand we know what happens right?

The program works Wade is cured of his Cancer but unlike Wolverine who gets to keep his handsome rugged features, Wade Wilson becomes horribly disfigured along with having accelerated powers. Wade Wilson adopts the alter ego Deadpool and hunts down his nemesis Ajax, Game of Thrones' Ed Skrein who let's go of his pretty boy locks for a shaved head and villainous role, in the hopes of being restored to his former self.

In his noble quest to save the fair damsel in distress Deadpool seeks out the help of X-Men's Colosus (voiced by Stefan Kapičić) and trainee Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand).

First time Feature Director Tim Miller worked closely with Ryan Reynolds, who also is an Executive Producer in the film, knew what they wanted and brought it the big screen.

DEFINITELY NOT your typical Super Hero Movie - but still is a SUPER Movie. Deadpool charms with it's straight up sarcastic comedy, poking fun at the cliche super hero movies or super heroes in general. The film even makes scathing comments against the very studio who well, finance these films. In the end, despite it's crusade against your typical hero movies, DEADPOOL is by all intents and purposes a LOVE story, tossed in a salad bowl along with sex and violence, (hence the R16 rating) cheesy love songs and golden pop culture references, you WILL laugh, as much as you will flinch.

8.5 out of 10 ⭐️ Deadpool may not have the emotional tug that 'Guardians of the Galaxy' has but it is a welcome and refreshing break from all the "formula superhero movies". It pays tribute to the popularity of geek culture from references to Voltron, Adbenture Time and yes, even Hello Kitty. It's so rich in pop-culture references I want to see it again!!!

It's the type of movie you go and see for a great time with friends or even a Valentines date! Oh! And make sure to stay after for what could probably be the best post-credits surprise!

Deadpool is in cinemas on February 10 and will also be available in IMAX. From 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros. Don't forget to share your Deadpool experience with the #DeadpoolPH

Spend Valentines with DEADPOOL

Since it's Valentines Day around the corner I'm going to throw this question out there.

Do you believe in second chances?

We've seen it in movies, heard it in songs, know a friend of a friend of your cousin who swears to it. But who would have thought that a superhero movie would also bear witness to it?

The upcoming Marvel superhero flick 'Deadpool' is nothing short of a second chance. Fans know how the character was 'defiled' in that horrible Wolverine Origins movie and now, audiences can see an origin story worthy of such a unique anti-hero. It's not only the Deadpool movie that's getting a second chance, even Ryan Reynolds who plays 'the Merc with the mouth' is getting not just a second chance but even a thrid chance as well. After his stint as Green Lantern and as the sewn-up Deadpool, Reynolds is given the chance to do the character justice and he's making sure it's done right in the Tim Miller helmed film.

Reynolds embraced the character’s myriad (and often twisted) facets.  “In the comic book world, Deadpool is a man of our time with the ability to spout just the right thing, in terms of a pop culture reference, at the worst possible moment,” he quips.  “That’s what makes him interesting to me and also makes him sort of limitless.”

Reynolds had long championed a film version of the iconic comics character.  His deep involvement in the film’s development continued throughout production, in brainstorming sessions with director Tim Miller and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Zombieland”).

Even Stan Lee loves Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool! Stan Lee of course, has a fun cameo in the film and also serves as an executive producer.  “There’s never been a character like Deadpool, and Ryan Reynolds plays him as though he was born to play the role,” says Lee. “Just like Robert Downey, Jr. was born to be Iron Man, you just can’t picture anybody else besides Ryan as Deadpool.”

Tim Miller, who makes his feature film directorial debut on Deadpool, notes, “I think Ryan’s personality and DNA are really infused in the character.  It was a close match to begin with, which is why Ryan was so attracted to Deadpool in the first place.”

“Ryan has a tremendous sense of humor, is very quick, and the character has really seeped into him,” says Reese.  “He became in a way our ‘Deadpool Police.’ Whenever we got off tone or were writing in a way that didn't feel quite right, Ryan would say, ‘I don't think that sounds like Deadpool.’  We knew he was the best arbiter, because Ryan knows and loves the comics and has assimilated Deadpool’s voice and sense of humor.”

“We’re staying as true to the character as possible,” adds Reynolds.  “We really ran with the idea of Deadpool being aware he’s a comic book anti-hero.  It gave us the freedom to tell this story in a totally unorthodox way.  We occupy a space that no other comic book movie has – or can.”

Deadpool is a unique figure in the Marvel Universe.  Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld created Deadpool as possessing an often non-superheroic attitude.  A sardonic foil to the holier-than-thou heroes and villains that populate  Marvel’s other comics, Deadpool constantly cracks edgy jokes and breaks the fourth wall.

Liefeld joins Stan Lee in his admiration of the filmmakers’ work in translating the character to the big screen.  “DEADPOOL explodes with action,” says Liefeld. “Ryan, Tim Miller, Paul and Rhett mined all the good stuff in the comics from about a ten-year period and came up with a movie that sews it all together.  This will be the Deadpool that will become canon moving forward!”

The marketing for Deadpool has been nothing short but genius! Ads have marketed the film as a Romantic Date movie in time for Valentines day (we, all know it's not but will still make a pretty cool Valentines date). The studio has even poked fun at Reynold's Green Lantern days. It's like they've embodied the very character of Deadpool.

Things also continue to look promising with positive reviews from fans who have seen an early rough cut of the movie. Locally, the film has been given a rating of R-16, which is good news for fans as it keeps true with the nature of the story.

Can't be happier with second chances!

A different kind, in fact, not-the-hero-you’re-expecting saves the day when
“Deadpool” opens February 10 in Philippine cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros. You can also catch it in IMAX theaters!
