Movies: Assembling The X-Force In “Deadpool 2” - Opens May 16 Nationwide in PH

Ryan Reynolds and Leslie Uggams in Deadpool 2
“Deadpool 2” introduces an ever-growing stronger alliance of the Merc with a Mouth with returning and new characters that features an extremely talented cast starring alongside Ryan Reynolds – Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz,  Shioli Kutsuna and Jack Kesy.

Ryan Reynolds not only stars in the title role, he also co-wrote (along with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) and produced “Deadpool 2.” “Ryan is an incredible comedic talent,” says director David Leitch, “and “Deadpool” works as a perfect ground for things he really excels at. He took that character from the comic books and made it his own brand. There’s a synergistic effect with “Deadpool” and Ryan. He’s funny and irreverent but also has a huge heart and compassion, like Deadpool.”

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld says, “The best version is what they’ve done with these films because they’ve put the utmost care and love into them and they haven’t betrayed the comic. X-Force is the second best-selling comic of all time. Twenty six years later, now I know it’s never going to fall.”

Movies: “Deadpool 2" Red Band Teaser Trailer Reveal

Ryan Reynolds’ donning of “Deadpool” turned the hero universe into a totally different genre that took the world pleasantly surprised.  A Marvel anti-hero known for his unrelenting and acerbic sense of humor,  the first "Deadpool" movie that was released in February 2015 became a worldwide smash hit with $783.1 million at the box-office so far.

With the latest release of the very unusual red band teaser trailer of the feverishly-anticipated sequel Deadpool is seen wearing a wig and carrying a paint palette, mimicking Bob Ross from the famous decade-long show “The Art of Painting” during the early ‘80s.   The red band trailer, suffused with creative expletives only Deadpool can deliver, gives the audience a peek of what to expect in the sequel – extreme action with his friends in the biz fighting villains such as  Cable (played by Josh Brolin), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams).

“Deadpool 2” is a 20th Century Fox feature film that will open in Phils. cinemas on May 30, 2018.  Follow 20th Century Fox (Ph) on Facebook,  20thcenturyfoxph on IG and YouTube, @20centuryfox on Twitter.

Movie Review: Life

The concept of "trapped with an alien trying to kill you" is nothing new but the science fiction horror film puts its own spin on the concept that there are so many twists and twists and surprises at every turn. Including one, pretty early in the film and an ending that will have you saying "WTF?!" -and it will stick to you even after you've left the cinema.

A mutinational six-member crew aboard the International Space Station are on a mission to receive soil samples from Mars and to study it. British Biologist Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare) is able to extract a single cell organism from the sample, this could possibly prove to be the first evidence of extraterrestrial life.

The crew continue monitoring the organism, which has now been given the name "Calvin" by American school children. Calvin looks like a transparent "Blubber" -cute and harmless and Hugh seems to have taken a liking to it, more than what is required of a scientist. An accidental change in atmosphere in the highly secured lab which contains Calvin causes the organism to go dormant. Guilt ridden, Hugh desperately tries to revive Calvin by giving him an electronic shock. Calvin "wakes up" and grabs Hugh's hand --- and the table's are immediately turned as the crew struggles to save their friend despite being conflicted with safety protocols.

The mission immediately turns into one of survival, as the crew find themselves in a battle for survival against a highly intelligent creature, whose only instinct is to survive- and that means devouring everything in its path.

I honestly did not expect "Life" to be as terrifying as it was but there I was shamelessly screaming and even hiding behind my jacket as I watched the crew face what could have possibly destroyed all life form on Mars.

All this excitement while making sure to keep in mind that this creature must never reach Earth-no matter the cost.

There are a lot of things that crossed my mind while watching "Life" - for one I thought about the bravery and sacrifice that our astraonauts and scientists do for humankind. I can't imagine what it would be like to leave your family and loved ones for years at a time, to be able to go up to space.

The risk that they put themselves in every second that they are out in space is inconceivable. The fact that they are in an environment that just wants to kill you them in every and any way possible. While real astraunats haven't had to face a threat like this (yet) - "Life"  surely makes the occupation a little more exciting, albeit with some added hazards.

As I said before, the film's premise is nothing new but it comes with surprises you will not see coming! And that ending will have you dumbfounded and you will leave the cinema going to the different scenes, dialogue and the series of unfortunate events which lead to its shocking conclusion.

There are some parts in the movie, which will make you think "Well that wasn't very smart" and will have you  thinking about "the science of it all".

7/10 "Life" is a thrilling ride with a couple of twists and surprises to separate it from movies of the same genre. "Life" also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds.

Movie Review: CRIMINAL

You might think of it as an updated take on the 90's science thriller films 'Face Off' and 'Unforgettable', in 2016's 'Criminal', Ryan Reynolds is Bill Pope, a CIA Agent, with integral information -only he knows. When Pope is killed in the line of duty, division head - Gary Oldman resorts to unorthodox means by reaching out to Tommy Lee Jones' Dr. Franks a neuroscientist specializing on memory transfer. A different character from his usual tough guy roles.

Dr. Franks helps extract Bill Pope's memories and transfer them to another human being. Problem is, the ideal candidate for the memory transfer is a Neanderthal-like Kevin Costner, who plays Jericho Stelwart who has spent most of his life in prison, thanks in part to his undeveloped frontal lobe, which was damaged as a child. This rare brain damage has robbed him of the capacity to differentiate right from wrong, making him live of life of violence and eventually spending half of it in prison.

Jericho can't comprehend emotions and when he is suddenly given Bill Pope's memories he starts experiencing things for the first time.

While the threat of an imminent world war is peering at the corner, Jericho wrestles with memories of Bill Pope's wife, Jill (Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot) and his daughter Emma.

Can Jericho finish Bill's mission in time? And how does a cruel hard man-who has no idea or experience on love and family do when he is suddenly handed memories of a beautiful family he loves but does not belong to?

The greatest strength of the film is how the audiences cheered on a hardened Jericho, whose brute, child like actions becomes almost amusing when he is suddenly bestowed with skills and memories of a CIA agent.

The film effectively combines elements of action and suspence with some emotional highs. Kevin Costner's rough and gruff Jericho will charm audiences as they cheer on the bad guy turned good.

While the movie was surprisingly enjoyable for audiences, it doesn't offer anything new along this story line which has already been explored. I think they could have chosen a better title for it too.

6 out of 10. “Criminal” opens in cinemas this April 13 from OctoArts Films International.

RYAN REYNOLDS AND GAL GADOT HOLD KEY SECRETS IN INTENSE ACTION-PACKED “CRIMINAL”

You had me at Gal Gadot and Gary Oldman...of course it's always a pleasure to see Ryan Reynolds on screen, especially after doing such an awesome job in "Deadpool".

The star-studded and high-octane action film “Criminal” headlines Kevin Costner, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman in a fresh, provocative spin on the espionage action-thriller that probes the secret world of memory and identity, as it propels an unwitting death row killer into the consciousness of a dedicated CIA agent in a ferocious race against time.

After playing the snarky superhero Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds takes on a more clean-cut character as he plays top CIA agent Bill Pope in “Criminal,” who was on an important mission who holds the key of secrets in the recesses of his mind.  In order to extract vital information, his memories, skills, and training were transplanted into hardened criminal Jericho Stewart’s (Kevin Costner) brain. The procedure was performed by a neuroscientist (Tommy Lee Jones) under the orders and close monitoring of the CIA chief (Gary Oldman).

What they didn’t count on was that Stewart was also able to absorb the other aspects of Pope’s memories, particularly his love for family and an overwhelming sense of responsibility. The fallen agent’s wife, Jill Pope (Gal Gadot) helps convince him of his purpose. For the first time in his life, the criminal was able to clearly distinguish right from wrong and sets about to save the world.

The criminal becomes the hunted yet again, but this time he is on the side of the law. The mission is in the memories and every memory holds a clue. He has 48 hours to find a valuable CIA asset called The Dutchman in order to foil an international terrorist’s plans.

Aside from the intriguing premise, “Criminal” is jam-packed with enough action scenes, explosions, and car chases to satisfy the hardcore action-genre fan. What is likewise interesting to note is that this is the second collaboration of top-draw film stars Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones following the 1991 thought-provoking film “JFK.”

Director Ariel Vromen – who came to the fore with his previous work in the chilling crime story “The Iceman” – saw in “Criminal’s” action-packed story a chance to create a hybrid: to fuse elements of an unnerving psychological battle and mind-twisting sci-fi with the classic cat-and-mouse espionage game. He was drawn to the story’s scientifically provocative central idea: memory transfer, the ability to lock a person’s most intimate and individual sensations, hopes and flashbacks into a total stranger’s brain. Though amnesia and memory loss have long been staples of the cinematic thriller, this story came at it in an opposite way. For “Criminal” is the story of a man gaining memories that both put him on a collision course with a terrorist and change the very foundations of who he believes he is.

The mix of searing, high-octane action with the psychological intensity of a man trying to figure out if he is killer or savior was irresistible. "This is a big thriller. We have massive action sequences with cars, helicopter and the huge Airbus 400, along with intense fight scenes and excitement,” Vromen points out. “However, I believe today's audiences are also looking for something beyond thrilling explosions and car crashes. I felt the unique journey of Jerico's growth into a different person could be just as exciting as the non-stop action.”

“Criminal” opens in Philippine theaters on April 13 and is released locally by OctoArts Films International.  Trailer link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKPZ67eumew

DEADPOOL Is The Superhero Movie Your Mama Didn't Want You To See

In the past two decades or so, Superhero movies have been a regular in the cinems and when I say 'regular' I mean there is one showing every 3 months or so. Said movie will then dictate what every other kid will be wearing on Halloween and what every party theme will be in the next few months.

Having said this, a formula in these Superhero movies has been created and has the. Subjected these family movies to be the go-to family movie dates whenever they are showing.

Now, I want you to take everything you know about Superhero movies and I want you to throw it out the window, because Deadpool is the Superhero movie your Mama didn't want you to see.

Putting the 'all caps' in ANTI-HERO, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces Operative turned mercenary who has a soft spot for 'the little guy'. Boy (Wade) meets girl (did I forget to mention that this was also a Love Story) or in this case his 'calendar girl' Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and they are perfect for each other, but life always has a way of screwing things up and Wade suddenly falls will with Cancer. In a desperate attempt to get cured, Wade joins the same Mutant Program which created Wolverine aaaand we know what happens right?

The program works Wade is cured of his Cancer but unlike Wolverine who gets to keep his handsome rugged features, Wade Wilson becomes horribly disfigured along with having accelerated powers. Wade Wilson adopts the alter ego Deadpool and hunts down his nemesis Ajax, Game of Thrones' Ed Skrein who let's go of his pretty boy locks for a shaved head and villainous role, in the hopes of being restored to his former self.

In his noble quest to save the fair damsel in distress Deadpool seeks out the help of X-Men's Colosus (voiced by Stefan Kapičić) and trainee Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand).

First time Feature Director Tim Miller worked closely with Ryan Reynolds, who also is an Executive Producer in the film, knew what they wanted and brought it the big screen.

DEFINITELY NOT your typical Super Hero Movie - but still is a SUPER Movie. Deadpool charms with it's straight up sarcastic comedy, poking fun at the cliche super hero movies or super heroes in general. The film even makes scathing comments against the very studio who well, finance these films. In the end, despite it's crusade against your typical hero movies, DEADPOOL is by all intents and purposes a LOVE story, tossed in a salad bowl along with sex and violence, (hence the R16 rating) cheesy love songs and golden pop culture references, you WILL laugh, as much as you will flinch.

8.5 out of 10 ⭐️ Deadpool may not have the emotional tug that 'Guardians of the Galaxy' has but it is a welcome and refreshing break from all the "formula superhero movies". It pays tribute to the popularity of geek culture from references to Voltron, Adbenture Time and yes, even Hello Kitty. It's so rich in pop-culture references I want to see it again!!!

It's the type of movie you go and see for a great time with friends or even a Valentines date! Oh! And make sure to stay after for what could probably be the best post-credits surprise!

Deadpool is in cinemas on February 10 and will also be available in IMAX. From 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros. Don't forget to share your Deadpool experience with the #DeadpoolPH
