Movie Review: Halloween

I usually shy away from slasher/horror films but it was under special circumstances that I found myself at the premiere of "Halloween" and I'm glad to say that I actually enjoyed the film and by "enjoy" I mean it delivered on its promise of horror and fright, fear and suspence.

I don't know what it is but there is something about a good horror/slasher genre film that stays and lingers with you, long after you've left the cinema (years, even) and I'll definitely be thinking about "Halloween" for some time.

A direct sequel to the original 1978 film (it ignores all sequels and the story that followed) "Halloween" picks up forty years after the fateful night when Michael Myers changed the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois forever.

Jamie Lee Curtis, reprises her role as Laurie Strode 40 years later and shows you just what surviving a horrific night can do to a person; it examines the trauma of surviving and knowing that the killer is still out there. she's definitely one badass grandmother, that's for sure. She reminds me a bit of Carol from "The Walking Dead".

But it's not all "cool" and "badass" with her as the viewers find out the price that she had to pay.

Becoming obsessed that Michael Myers, would one day come back, she has become some sort of a doomsday prepper, complete with an arsenal of guns and weapons, a secret and fortified panic room she also prepared her daughter, Karen (Judy Greer) and that means training her at a young age and well, social services may not be too keen about that.

Estranged from her daughter and trying to build a relationship with her granddaughter, Laurie becomes a recluse with her obsession on Michael Myers, her worst nightmares coming to life when he escapes and goes on a killing spree.

Yes. You will squirm in your seat and cower in fear as Michael Myers strikes fear in the heart of his victims on the most frightening night of the year-Halloween.

With the retro 80's music, paying homage to its roots and the clever use of muted sounds, even Myers heavy breathing beneath his mask is enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, the clever use of every nook and cranny of the screen is also an effective way to get you to jump from your seat. The body count is high and the manner of deaths is grisly, there is indeed a lot to be afraid of.

What sets this slasher thriller apart is its interesting take on the relationship between hunter and prey, monster and victim.

Do we stop to ask, what happens to the survivors?

Throughout the movie,I was stopping myself from screaming but finally gave in at a particularly stressful moment, it was a satisfying scream because what else are you to do in while watching slasher films?

6/10 -"Halloween" is now showing in cinemas.

Movies: Undisputed Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis Returns In “Halloween”

For more than two-thirds of her life, Jamie Lee Curtis has embraced the mantle of protector and guardian of Halloween (1978) character Laurie Strode.  In the late 1970s, the heroine that Curtis brought to life accomplished what few other on-screen women before her—long relegated to damsels in distress—would consider a probability or possibility in a horror film.

She survived.

Movies: After 40 Years, Evil Returns Home In “Halloween”

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse resets the timeline to bring Halloween to a new generation.  Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode, who comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Master of horror John Carpenter executive produces and serves as creative consultant on this film, joining forces with cinema’s current leading producer of horror, Jason Blum (Get Out, Split, The Purge, Paranormal Activity).  Inspired by Carpenter’s classic, filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride crafted a story that carves a new path from the events in the landmark 1978 film, and Green also directs.

Halloween Free Comic Book Day with the Kids!

SUPER late post! Sorry but we've been super busy with shoots and events but anyways better late than never right?

This year's Halloween Comic Book Fest was extra special for Paul and I since this time we had our nephew and nieces tag along with us. Of course the place to be was at Fully Booked in BGC.

9 year old - Jillian, Paul's goddaughter has been showing interest in reading, so we started giving her extra copies of our hauls from the past Free Comic Book Days - the ones for kids of course.

Once Jillian had a comic book in her hands, you couldn't disturb her anymore! She could even read while the car was moving, which of course is something that we told her not to do.

A few months ago, Jillian's younger sister asked me for comic books and when I said that she could get them for Christmas, she asked to receive them earlier. So I thought why not bring the whole gand (consisting of  3 nieces and 1 nephew) to Halloween Comic Book Fest?

It was perfect! There were less people during Halloween Comic Book Fest si we wouldn't have a hard time looking after the kids.

I remember during the previous Free Comic Book Fests that we've attended I would always admire the parents who would bring their children along to pass on the love of comic books but this time we had our own bunch of 'next generation" comic book lovers.

I would think that they were pretty much overwhelmed when they got to the table to choose their three free comic books. I had to urge for them to choose, I guess after the initial shock subsided they made their picks and were also equally happy to get freebies like balloons, snacks and candy - of course it's not Halloween with out these treats right?

The kids were able to see some cosplayers - they weren't that many though since we arrived early, maybe next year we';; come later so the kids could see more cosplayers. Hopefullly next year the kids won't be shy about taking photos with the cosplayers. :)

On the way home, Jillian couldn't keep her eyes off the free comic books she got. Aside from that we all sang out loud to songs the kids loved that were in my iTunes such as "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark" from Fall Out Boy (the kids know it because of Pitch Perfect 2.

All in all it was a great way for us to bond with our pamangkins. I know that they enjoyed it just as much as we did!

The Walking Dead: Haunted Prison Experience

I love watching movies but I'm not a big fan of Horror Movies. I just don't see the point of scaring yourself sh*tless - and I scare easily. Another thing about the Horror genre is that there is a fine line between "no plot and all gore" which is often crossed and slasher movies riddled with cliches leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Aside from not being a fan of the Horror genre, I am not a fan at all of Zombies. I remember having a conversation with my siblings (so long ago) that Zombies were our least favorite of all monsters and creatures. I mean they're dead and rotting and they eat you- as in not a bite but chew you up and worse- they could be your loved one turned undead, so talk about physical and psychological damages.

Even when the Zombie Explosion blew up, I tried to fight against it as hard as I can. I didn't get into The Walking Dead wagon right away. It all started with Zombie books, colleagues encouraged me to read Mira Grant's Deadline trilogy. I was in a book club of sorts and Grant's Post Apocalyptic Zombie trilogy was in the circulation. It was in Grant's books that I learned terms like: Spontaneous Amplification: Defined as going through the "Zombie Changing" phenomenon without being bitten by an infected zombie. Happens after death. I also got an insight into what Virology would look like if say Zombie Outbreak does happen.

After Gran't trilogy, I read World War Z, which unfortunately was not better than the movie. Watching Brad Pitt battle Zombies on the big screen was much better. It followed an actual -Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Resolution (of sorts) unlike it's boring book counter part.

By this time, I've already started watching The Walking Dead, I tried to fight it off, but I couldn't- I was already bitten and the infection spread quick. Now, my heart goes through tachycardia every Monday Morning when I'm watching Fox's Parallel Play with the US of the newest episode of The Walking Dead and I spend the entire week wondering what will happen in the next episode.

I guess I started as a non-Zombie person to an okay-Zombie person ^_^ So I was really excited when I got the opportunity to cover The Walking Dead: Haunted a prison House at (one of my favorite places) Eastwood! Thanks to Megaworld, FOX and my Senpai Azrael for the opportunity!

THE WALKING DEAD: Haunted Prison House at Eastwood City

As if the Zombie Explosion could not get any bigger! Eastwood City (my home away from home) has tied up with Fox International Channels to bring you The Walking Dead Experience - yes you get to live in the skin (sort of) of all your favorite characters. You get to go ala-Rick or Daryl or Michrone in a Horror House este Haunted Prison House taken straight out of the TV show. Okay so you might not be swinging a katana or firing off a gun but you'll definitely feel the suspense and fear that could only come from walking through a pathway with walkers at every corner.
