Hunter X Hunter: The Last Mission Showing Exclusively at SM Cinemas

I can't believe that it's already been a year since Movie Punch distributed Hunter X Hunter: The Phantom Rogue last May and now they're at it again with the new movie ~ Hunter X Hunter: The Last Mission which will screen EXCLUSIVELY at SM Cinemas on April 19 - that's a Black Saturday so not sure how that's going to work but I guess they will be screening it for a couple of weeks so mark those calendars! 

If you will allow me to walk down memory lane - I must say that the Movie Announcement for The Phantom Rogue last year is actually the most viewed post in our blog for some strange reason you can actually check it out here.

So I guess that's pretty much my trip down to memory lane now let's take a look at what we have in store for us in the future! :D 

Movie Punch (Pioneer Films) brings to us in partnership with SM Cinema another Hunter X Hunter film - this time it's The Last Mission which was released in Japan last December 27 2013 in Japan. 

I always cherish the experience of catching your favorite anime movies in the big screen. I mean yeah - anybody can just download or stream the movie but to actually experience it inside the cinema where you can fully appreciate the visuals and the sound for what it is supposed to be is a rare treat. Just think about it - when the series first came out all those years ago would you have ever thought you would one day be able to enjoy it inside a cinema? 

And if you missed The Phantom Rouge then you shouldn't miss The Last Mission! 

The movie takes a deeper look into the Hunter Association on which the series is based on and takes it to a whole different level by splitting the association between good and evil.The character of Netero (the chairman of the Hunters Association) is also focused as we get a sneak peek into his past. 

After a brutal attack from the 'dark Hunters' Killua is badly injured and Kurapika is at death's doorstep. Gon is placed in a difficult predicament - will he follow the dark Hunters to save his friends and what will he do when the crimes of the Hunter association are revealed?

Rurouni Kenshin character stills spread online!

Updated! Last December 12, 2013 a photo of actress Tao Tsuchiya as fan favorite and head strong Misao Makamichi went online. I think she's really pretty - look at that face! I just wish she would wear more blue just to complete the association with the character :) Looking forward to her acting chops and stunt skills since Misao's character will be doing a lot of both in the movies! 

Fans should stay tuned since more character posters are scheduled to be unveiled on the official website on December 29! I really hope we start seeing some bad guys in the movie ;)

As if the summer of 2014 could not come any closer - new Rurouni Kenshin character stills featuring new characters in the upcoming Kyoto Arc movies have been making its way in cyberspace and across social networking sites for the past days. 

Some fans may say 'Yay!' while others may say 'Nay!' but I definitely give a pat on the back to the costume and design team of the movies for maintaining the same consistency in bringing beloved characters from the series to their flesh and blood counterparts on the big screen. 

Channeling Soujiro Seta's boyish charms actor Kamiki Ryunosuke eminates the same charisma as Shishio Makoto's right hand. Now can we see his famous 'poker face' smile?!

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm loving or hating the hair which actor Yusuke Iseya is wearing as Aoshi Shinamori, I guess it would take more than a photo to determine that, seeing how the hair movies in fighting and action sequences would probably be the deciding factor. But aside from the hair, we simply cannot deny Aoshi's signature swagger emanating from that photo. Cue in the ladies' swoons.

Please raise your hand if you're exited to see Aoshi's Kaiten Kenbu or Spiral Sword Dance because I know I am :)   

Min Tanaka as Nenji Kashiwazaki (Okina) 

And can we just get an overwhelming warm and fuzzy 'awwwwww' for actor Min Tanaka's photo as Nenji Kashiwazaki or better known as his old spy name: Okina. I just love his character still and plus points to the super kawaii neko (super cute cat) on his lap! Here's to hoping that the movie will also feature him kicking butt with his steel tonfas. 

These character stills are just getting everyone fired up for the two movies: 

"Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire" and "Rurouni Kenshin: The End of a Legend" which is scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of 2014 in Japan. 

Speaking of fired up fans are already clamoring for photos or teasers of the ultimate bad guy - Shishio Makato! 

This photo of Takeru Sato as Kenshin Himura on the set of the movie shooting some final scenes has also surfaced. The cast and crew are hard at work at shooting this 'important scene' where we see Kenshin covered in wounds. I can pretty much guess which scene this is and I'm just as stoked and excited as ever! :)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: Movie Review

So I'm a little disappointed in myself since my review came in later than I wanted. I usually start working on my movie reviews the minute I get home from the premiere but when I got home- my mom's home not our home, the mouse was acting up and this was already at 1:00 AM so I just decided to go to sleep and work on the review the next day - so here I am now busy typing away a movie review to a movie I really enjoyed. :) 

Just some personal thoughts before diving right in to the movie review. You can jump right in at the Movie Review below :P 

I have been going to movie premieres for some time now so I pretty much know what happens. So imagine my surprise when I saw the large number of people lined up to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire it was unlike any other movie premiere I have ever attended and there were at least 3 cinemas having the premieres and all of them had long lines! Talk about being the anticipated movie of the year! 

The firsts didn't stop there though since another first encounter for a movie premiere was the fact that ALL phones and gadgets with cameras were collected before the movie. While I know and understand that this was all for the fight against piracy it was a pain in the ass. 

Can you imagine collecting every phone and gadget in a theater full of people? Yeah you do the math, especially in this day and age where everyone has at least one cellphone or gadget. Collecting the phones may not have been much of a problem but everyone claiming their phones after the movie all at the same time - well that's another story. 

And since I didn't have a watch I couldn't tell what time it is or update my mom and my husband how I was doing, I was with my baby brother for the movie so my mom really wanted updates. We came in the movie house around 7:00PM and left at past 11:50PM. It was an inconvenience but you know what? The movie really made up for it and all of that was worth it in the end :P

On to the movie review! 

So for everyone's reference I actually read the books - the whole trilogy about three years ago so I pretty much had an idea of what the story was about. Now even if I have read the books and am a fan of the franchise I was not going to go 'Oh it was a great movie!' blindly since I actually did not enjoy (the first movie) - Hunger Games last year. I was really disappointed at the last part in the movie since it failed to capture the hanging by a moment, nail biter ending in the book. With that being said I can critically say that the second installment Catching Fire - was AMAZING! 

From the beginning of the movie until the end you find yourself in an emotional and political arena (pun intended) where you have to deal with the dynamic of a rebellion unfolding and of course all the emotional baggage that the characters carry.

When The Hunger Games came out last year I had to roll my eyes so many times and bite my tongue since people thought the movie was all about a battle to the death of children (which is why it was compared a lot to Battle Royale) when in fact the whole battle to the death was just the tip of the ice burg and that the story actually deals with a more complicated political dynamic. I was glad that this was touched on in the second movie and I was really glad that they included (SPOILER ALERT) the scene in the Presidential Ball where Peeta is offered a purple elixir to drink so that he can throw up what he ate - just so he can eat some more and try everything was very important to me at least and I really felt strongly about this scene (also when I read it in the book) because as Peeta put it: "People in District 12 have nothing to eat while in the Capitol people where gorging themselves sick from eating too much food" and surprisingly this is something that we don't just read in books and watch in movies because it actually happens in real life! 

Some people have so much and too much while others have nothing at all. I was really glad that they included this scene in the movie, although it was really short it was really powerful for me and really spoke a hundred words. I hope that the people who come to watch the movie catch it also. It's really important to understand especially to get an idea of what the rebellion is all about. 

Amazing cast and amazing acting  

In case you guys didn't know Jennifer Lawrence is actually an Academy Award Winner for her role as Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook. She isn't just some actress known for being the lead in a well known franchise but she also has the acting chops to back it up.Which is a good thing since the character of Katniss Everdeen is very complicated as she becomes the reluctant symbol of a rebellion and is torn between the love of a long time friend and the love of a fellow tribute. Some things that people don't realize or maybe forget is that unlike the Careers who spend their lives training and wanting to be part of The Hunger Games and winning at all cost, Katniss is a great archer and hunter because she had to be, she had to learn how to hunt in order to provide food for her family. She didn't pick up the bow and arrow to learn how to make pin cushions out of other tributes but she picked it up (and became good at it) so her family can eat. There is a lot of ugly crying and ugly shouting that Katniss does throughout the movie but Jennifer Lawrence delivers it in a convincing way and that is real acting. 

Smile for the cameras. Oddly enough the victors' celebrity status and Katniss and Peeta's on-screen romance so that people would 'forget' the real problems is eerily familiar to how we follow and poke into the lives of real celebrities for our own pleasure and amusement.

Movie Review: Escape Plan

I will be honest when I first got the invite to catch the premiere of Escape Plan I was a bit meeeh- about it. Mostly because it was like watching my two uncles in an action packed movie going all Rambo (pun intended). 

I grew up watching both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenneger during their prime. I clearly remember Demolition Man which was a favorite of my Dad's (I'm not yet that old since I'm not referring to Rocky or Rambo which are also some of my Dad's favorites ) and Stallone looked good in his uniform and beret while I vividly remember Schwarzenneger in his birthday suit in that famous Terminator scene (just ask Barney Stinson!)

And to see these two guys still go at it in cringing fight sequences and stunts is almost cruel to the point of being a violation on human rights, I mean these two should be enjoying a scotch in front of a beach and be in retirement! But if Liam Neeson can still kick ass (so to speak) in Taken then these two veterans (pun intended again) would certainly have another go at it right? 

And boy did they have a go at it in Escape Plan the R-13 rating was just right. There was a degree of violence in the movie which was executed with professionally as you would expect of experts like Stallone and Schwarzenegger. 

Not ready for retirement. Stallone and Schwarzenneger prove they still  got in them. 

Regardless off whatever initial reservations I had about the movie I enjoyed it and so did the people in the jam packed premier night. They all cheered and gasped at the appropriate scenes and roared in laughter during the humorous parts of the movie which is a good indication of a movie that was well received by its audience. 

Escape Plan is as you guessed it a movie about busting out of jail but it takes on a new spin with Stallone as a hired escape artist who is paid to be placed inside prisons so he can bust out of them. 

What he thinks is just an ordinary job takes a turn for the worse when he is placed in an super secret maximum security prison designed so that escape is impossible.

While a lot of people are excited and there is much buzz with the 'ber months' being official, what with Christmas and 13th month pay just around the corner but aside from bringing out the old Christmas tree people are also excited about Hunger Games: Catching Fire hitting cinemas on November! 

Cue in the screams and applause. 

While trailers of the upcoming movie have fans giddy with excitement another cause for good news is the upcoming soundtrack. If you remember the first movie had the hauntingly beautiful 'Safe and Sound' song from Taylor Swift ft. The Civil Wars well for Catching Fire get ready for a historical and hair rising song since Coldplay (arguably one of the most iconic bands of our generation) will be contributing a song to the movie! 

Coldplay's contribution to the Catching Fire soundtrack ~ Atlas is the first song the band has recorded for a movie soundtrack.

Catching Fire director, Francis Lawrence is thrilled with Coldplay's contribution to the movie, he said: "I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film".

More Rurouni Kenshin Casting news! Find out who will be playing Yumi!

As production of the two Rurouni Kenshin live action movies is ongoing. Casting news on characters are driving fans crazy with anticipation. So here is the latest line up. 

Maryjun Takahasi will be playing the 'woman behind Shishio Makato' the beautiful and seductive Yumi Komagata and she is half Filipino! :) 

Already previously announced, Yusuke Iseya will be playing, Aoshi Shinamori, the head of the Oniwabanshu. I'm hoping that he and Kenshin will still have that amazing fight scene! 

Ryosuke Miura will be playing 'broom head' Sawagejo Cho of the Jupon Katana, one of Shisho's 'Ten Swords' and judging from his pose in the photo - this casting is spot on!   

Yukiyoshi Ozawa will be playing Ito Hirubumi, a Choshu samurai like Kenshin and a four time prime minister of Japan. I don't really remember him from the anime, or what he looks like. Clues anyone? 

Min Tanaka has been cast as the lovable Okina AKA Kashiwazaki Nenji, of the Oniwabanshu I hope they also show his comedic side, I'm also looking forward to him wielding those steel tonfas. 

The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones: Sountrack Sampler

I'm still in the middle of reading the The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones and I'm really enjoying it. It has a fast-paced Harry Potter tone meets Twilight theme to it with Angels and Demons battling it out. I wanted to make sure that I get to finish the book before it hits the movies on August 21.  

To make things even more exciting a preview of the movie's soundtrack has been made available to tickle the interest and wet the palette of the millions of followers of the franchise. 

You can hear Colbie Caillat's 'When The Darkness Comes' exclusively in this  Entertainment Weekly article. (This is the full version of the song, snippets of the song are available online in Soundcloud.) It's a beautiful song and I already have it on LSS (Last Song Syndrome) and in my opinion suits the story.

Upcoming Movies: Odd Thomas

And a new novel-to-movie adaptation is making it's way to cinemas in the form of Odd Thomas. 

Odd Thomas is a thriller novel by Dean Koontz which was published in 2003. The novel is a New York Times Bestseller and was well received by critics and has gained fans alike and has spawned other sequels:

 Odd Apocalypse (2011)

Deeply Odd (2012) 

While I have yet to read the novel and I don't think I will be able to in time when it hits the movies on July 17, 2013 ~ (I can always read it even after seeing the movie ;P) I can see that it is a very interesting novel, gathering an average of 3.75 out of 5 stars in Goodreads.

Odd Thomas is about a young man, who can see ghosts but aside from ghosts he can also see 'bodachs' which are shadowy creatures that go to people who will eventually encounter accidents or even death. Despite his simple life, Odd Thomas does his best to help the troubled souls who seek his help but this isn't your Medium or Ghost Whisperer type of story as there is something bigger and more sinister than ghosts just around the corner. 

A mysterious man comes into town and Odd Thomas just knows that there is something big and bad that is going to happen to his quiet town of Pico Mundo. 

Directed by Stephen Sommers (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Van Helsing, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King) Anton Yelchin is Odd Thomas and I am personally looking forward to seeing Willem Dafoe in the movie. :)

Movie Premiere: The Bling Ring

So last night was the Movie Premiere of The Bling Ring at SM Megamall - which was distributed by Pioneer Films - Movie Punch. The Premiere was also made possible through media partners Mellow 94.7 and Sun Cellular. 

It was our first time to be seated in the reserved portion of the theater - it pays to come early! :P 

There was the usual game in the theater - it was a 'bring me' game for Android and Samsung gadgets, Paul and I sat back in our chairs - we are both iOs users. :P 

I usually have a different post when it comes to the Movie Premiere itself and my Movie Musings/Movie Review but I feel for this movie I would probably be giving in my two cents or some of it with this post. That's how powerful and thought provoking the movie is in a way - Paul and I both love babies, toddlers and kids but I'm scared of teenagers! Especially the ones in the movie! But I guess it all comes down with how the 'kids' are brought up and what their values are.

The movie is actually based on a Vanity Fair article written by Nancy Jo Sales - the title of the article 'The Suspects Wore Louboutins'  I took the time to read the article and it was a very good adaptation indeed- even having some lines in the movie directly taken from the article. Upcoming Movies: Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods

Considered as the most popular and successful manga and anime in the world. Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball Z has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide since it's release in 1984-now almost 29 years later and after 17 movies - an 18th movie is bidding it's time (as of this posting -44 days) before it is released in Philippine Cinemas. 

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods was released in Japan last March 30, 2013 and it was the first Dragon Ball Z movie to be released in IMAX Digital theaters. (I hope that happens here! Can you imagine watching Kame -Hame Wave in IMAX?!?!?!)

Upcoming Movies: The Bling Ring

There are two names that caught my attention when it came to the movie 'The Bling Ring' one was (obviously) Emma Watson and the other - Sofia Coppola. 

We all know Emma Watson as Hermione Granger in the movie version of the Harry Potter franchise and she has since grown into a beautiful young woman from the awkward buck tooth kinky haired Muggle turned Gryfindorr. 

Sofia Coppola on the other hand is an Academy award winning director and also the recipient of the Golden Lion, which is the top prize given during the Venice Film Festival. She is the woman behind the movies Lost in Translation and Somewhere and now she is working her magic on 'The Bling Ring' which is a movie based on actual events of how a group of teenagers robbed a number of celebrities including Paris Hilton.

Movie Musings: Now You See Me

We've been very busy with events these past few weeks, so this Movie Review is already a tad too late but you know what they 'better late than never' right? And I have already given my initial review of the movie through tweets, Facebook and Instagram posts. :) 

So here we go-last May 29, 2013 was the Movie Premiere of 'Now You See Me' blog post here. So in my initial posts I already mentioned that 'Now You See Me' was a combination of Ocean's 13, The Prestige and (a favorite movie of mine) The Italian Job, so why these three movies? 

Well Ocean's 13 for the all star cast - we have Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) as the showman, as a Woody Harelson (The Hunger Games) as a mentalist, Isla Fisher as an escape artist and Dave Franco as a pickpocket; together they are the Four Horsemen, a group of magicians who as their final act rob a bank.  

The star studded cast is joined by Michael Caine as the Horsemen's benefactor and Morgan Freeman as a 'Breaking the Magician's code' guy and of course Mark Rufallo is the often clueless to a point of being hilarious FBI agent who is assigned to the case, he is joined by Melanie Laurent as an Interpol agent.  

'Now You See Me' is a fast movie - it is fast paced, you have to think fast or else you will be left behind. It is a movie that will really make you think- but in a fun kind of "thinking", not the type that will make your head hurt. 

Movie Premiere: Now You See Me

So earlier was the Movie Premiere of 'Now You See Me' at SM Megamall and we were once again fortunate enough to be invited by Pioneer Films (Movie Punch) to catch the premiere screening. 

We immediately noticed that we would be sharing this movie experience with 106.7 Energy FM which was the Media Partner for the event. It was also sponsored by Pizza Hut :) 

There were some games before the movie started and I really, really wanted to win that Palm Card! Hello! Pizza Hut! Palm Card (ahem, ahem) I just suck big time when it comes to draw lots. (I never win!) 

So after the games and obligatory photos were done, we settled right in to start the movie, I must say though I really liked the new video for the National Anthem, it featured modern day heroes, like a fireman rescuing a baby (instead of 'Chicago Fire' it could have easily been 'Tondo Fire'), OFW's, a doctor in the barrio etc. I personally liked it more than the spot the actor/playing the National Hero video. Kudos to GMA 7 for the production. 

It was a good thing I was able to catch the trailers - because I love trailers and the trailers that were previewed were all upcoming movies from Movie Punch.

Do Yuou see what I see? 

Like I always, I have a separate movie review from the movie premiere post, so I will (try to) save most of what I thought of the film but I will definitely say that it was amazing! I know I said in an earlier blog post that it was a cross between Ocean's 13 and The Prestige but now that I have seen it I would want to add another movie in the mix and this is one of my favorite movies I might add- The Italian Job. 

'Now You See Me' Showing on May 30!

Probably a cross between 'Ocean's 13' and 'The Prestige', 'Now You See Me' promises a lot of magic, a big bank heist and an unconventional battle between 

'The Four Horsemen' (a group of magicians) and the FBI and the Interpol.

So aside from the above mentioned I am also excited to see this movie because of its all star cast. Let me just say that I am becoming fan of Jesse Eisenberg, we all surely saw him in his award winning role as Mark Zuckerburg in The Social Network. Of course it is always a pleasure to watch Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo and Micheal Caine on screen. 

Also how come they don't keep anything for themselves? Hmmmm- as Sheldon would say -'Color me intrigued'.

Movie Musings: Hunter X Hunter: The Phantom Rogue

So Movie Musings for the Anime Movie Invasion continues with Hunter X Hunter: The Phantom Rogue. The Movie premiere was held last night at SM North Edsa, the Block and was made possible through Pioneer Films (Movie Punch), SM Cinemas and their official media sponsor Animax. 

While Naruto and One Piece each have over 10 movie titles under their belt, this is the first ever movie for Hunter X Hunter. The movie is based on a manuscript which author Yoshihiro Togashi wrote ten years ago and was never used. This has been a great source of intrigue, interest and anticipation among the fans. 

While many fans of the series may be frustrated with the long hiatuses to which the manga has been known to take, the movie is definitely a must see and would definitely quench any thirst brought about the long pauses in between arcs and chapters of the manga. 

Warning- Spoilers ahead. 

The story line of Hunter X Hunter movie: The Phantom Rogue revolves around Kurapika as we get a glimpse into his past and life within the Kurta clan and we are also introduced to his childhood friend Pairo and of course Kurapika is always followed and/or connected one way or another with the infamous Phantom Troupe A.K.A the Spiders, I would say that they are probably the most bad-ass bad guys comparable even to the notorious Akatsuki of Naruto Shippuuden fame. Speaking of the Phantom Troupe we would definitely be seeing a lot of them during the movie in that antagonist
/protagonist/middle/grey area sort of way. 

A big chunk of the movie also highlights the Phantom Troupe as the mysterious 'Number 4' spider is featured - remember that Hisoka replaced the original number 4 member. So we meet original member number 4- Omokage who creates life like puppets but he needs human eyes to completely make his puppets alive. Wait? Eyes? So yup! The Anime Movie Invasion rounds up (for now-hopefully) with Hunter X Hunter: The Phantom Rouge as it shows in today (May 15, 2013) exclusively in SM Cinemas. 

The movie premiere was held in The Block, SM North Edsa were a movie house filled with Hunter X Hunter fans graced the premiere. 

Nothing beats watching a movie with fellow fans and admirers and the whole cinema was in unison with the laughter, the gasps, the cheers and the tears (and there was a lot-and more!) and the full house theater was very vocal with the twists and turns and ups and downs of the movie. 

I will have a separate Movie Musings post (movie review) about the movie - so no need to worry about any spoilers for there will be none. :P
