Music: SPONGECOLA LAUNCHES DOUBLE EP “SINAG” + “TALA” VIA A CONCERT AT TEATRINO!
August 19, 2016--- At a time when music has gone almost all-digital, pop rock band SPONGE COLA, composed of Yael Yuzon (vocals), Erwin “Armo” Armovit (lead guitar), Gosh Dilay (bass) and Ted Mark Cruz (drums), defy the norm by releasing not just one but two (extended play) EPs!
The two EPs, one entitled “Sinag” and the other one “Tala,” is the band’s fourth (and fifth), having released their self-titled Sponge Cola in 2003, Tambay in 2011 and District in 2012.
Their EP Tambay has likewise earned them the rare distinction of being the only other recording band (besides the Eraserheads) to reach Diamond Record status.
But frontman Yael stressed it wasn’t a conscious effort from the group to come up with a double EP instead of a full album; “It just so happened that when we looked at the list of tracks, we couldn’t decide on a proper flow for the track list.”
“There was an even split, half of the songs were upbeat and “sobrang happy” while the rest of the tracks were quite “somber.” Doing mini-albums felt like the natural thing to do, so in the end we decided to make a double EP instead,” adds Armo.
Mood Music
Taken as a single unit, the EPs are aptly called “Sinag Tala,” a portmanteauof “sinag” or ray of sunshine and “tala” for stars. It also underscores the contrast in themes of the material the band has put together in the last few years.
“We were thinking of a title that would also be a play on the words that would best describe the mood of each EP. It’s like when you want to listen to fun music then all you have to do is play “Sinag,” and when you’re feeling a bit “emo” you can switch to the songs from “Tala,”explained Yael.
“In a way, it’s like curating a playlist for our fans. “Sinag” is suited for daytime listening and “Tala,” for evening, one perks you up while the other is best for reminiscing and introspection,” I guess that’s another way to look at it,” says Armo.
SINAG
Setting up the good vibes is “Pag-ibig” the carrier single of “Sinag.” “The song was written by Simon Tan and is being used as the theme song of the GMA 7 TV series “Dangwa,” which stars Janine Gutierrez, Mark Herras, and Aljur Abrenica.
“The melody of the song is as rosy as its lyrics, ‘Gumaganda ang paligid, Kung bawat tao ay puno ng pag-ibig napapawi ang pighati, masilayan lang ang iyong ngiti oh Kay gandang isipin, ang isang mundong puno ng pag-ibig.” We were given two songs and we liked this one better,” explains Yael.
The second track to be released is the almost anthemic “Pasukan na Naman” a throwback to the band’s school days and inspired by one of the old songs from the Eraserheads.
“This is also the first song that we incorporated math in the lyrics; “may PE at history and x squared = 9, X = 3…” the band noted.
“Ang Saya,” the band revealed is the sibling of their mega hit “Tambay.”
“Back then, we were commissioned to do a song for a campaign and they chose Tambay,” Yael recalled. “Ang Saya” was the other choice, and we felt it also deserved a shot to be heard so we included it in this EP.
The only English track in the “Sinag” EP is the song “Butterflies,” which they group describes as “yazzy” or their own take on jazz.
Wrapping up the first EP is the song “Bisita” a shout out of thanks to all the places that the band has performed throughout their career.
“The lyrics says it all, ‘hindi naman ako tagarito, pero salamat sa maayang pagtanggap, ang bukas ay darating ala-ala'y babaunin, sana ay magkita pang muli.” All these years, we’ve played in so many places and we are just grateful that we are always well-taken cared of by our hosts, bisita man kami pero they treat us like family,” Yael stated.
TALA
On the other end of the spectrum is the EP “Tala” which is filled with melancholic slow-burners such as the carrier single “Coda.”
Bassist Gosh Dilay explains, “It’s a post breakup song, and we were trying to reimagine how it felt to end a relationship, and contemplating if you made the right decision.
Next, the band explores meaning of desire in the song “One and Only Weakness.”
Yael says “it’s the feeling of how badly you want someone and what you’d do once the table has turned. It’s also a bit experimental for us as we used digital drums on the track.”
Completing the track list are “Pagtungo” written by Yael’s brother Yan Yuzon, an acoustic and full band version of “Bahaghari” and “Sabay Tayo,”which became the theme song of the Gilas Pilipinas Basketball team.
“Sabay Tayo” was memorable not only because my wife Karylle wrote the lyrics but because we also got to work with the UP Tugma who played the traditional instruments in the song,” said Yael.
Frankenstein Baby
In their previous interviews, the band used to describe their new EPs as a “Frankenstein” of sorts because of the recording process.
“Frankenstein because we worked with several writers and producers for the EPs and also got the chance to record the tracks in several studios and whole lot of other places,” explains Yael.
“There was a time I was recording my vocals at our house, guitars inside the car while Armo did “One and Only Weakness” in this really nice bar in Katipunan called Route 196.”
“It was fun to do the album because we were not forced to finish everything inside the studio.”
The band adds that this is also the first time they didn’t have to cram to finish the album.
“In all our previous albums we would often be pressed for time and would always end up rushing to finish the album, this time we had the luxury of working at a relaxed pace,” Armo added.
“We had breathers to refresh our minds. So, every time we resume the creative process, there’s always something new.”
Episodic EP-ics?
The band also teased that the double EPs may just be a sign of things to come.
“We want to create something episodic—parang Star Wars! So “Sinag” and “Tala” could be part 1 and 2 of a series—and hopefully we could connect everything both visually and musically; from the album covers which you could connect into a bigger picture—who knows!” Yael says with excitement.
But for now they are releasing the EPs separately; “We often interact with our fans through Facebook and social media, and they would tell us that they go to several of our mall shows and end up buying several copies of the same CD. So this time, since we are releasing two EPs it would be cheaper than a full album and they could just buy one now and get the other one on our next show!”
To celebrate the release of “Sinag” and “Tala” Sponge Cola will be having a concert at the Teatrino on August 26, 2016. VIP tickets are priced at P1000 which comes with 2 free EPs, front row seats and SoundCheck party passes. P600 for the succeeding rows, comes with 1 free EP and P500 for the remaining rows plus 1 EP.
Sponge Cola Sinag + Tala is produced by Spongecola and Alvin Cornista and released by Universal Records.

Honestly, I'm really happy that despite the hiatus the band is still very active, albeit in non-traditional avenues, hence the DVD launch and the custom guitar. Paul has put his axe-wielding days behind him in favor of being behind the camera, but we'll definitely get a copy of the DVD one of these days.

Take A Bow: Built By Sonic
I've been working in Eastwood for a good 5 or so years and the Built By Sonic store has literally been a couple of meters from where I work, but because I work the night shift when I pass by the small shop with a big sound, it's already closed. I've bought a couple of CDs from them over the years, I didn't really look through the band shirts, thinking that they were always out of my budget.
I always told myself one of these days I would be dropping by the shop, I've been eyeing the 'Happiness Is' Taking Back Sunday album that I would spot through the door whenever I would pass by the store at 9:00 in the morning, on my way home-of course the store is still closed. I could see a couple of vinyl, might check those out too.
Then, just this week Built By Sonic released a farewell video, thanking fans and supporters for a wonderful five years. What?! I was really surprised and I could feel the sadness slowly creep in. Can you imagine all of my regret? I should have visited sooner, or more often. I thought. Then I also realized that I never got to go to any of the concerts that the store arranged. They also had a couple of music festivals (Sonic Boom) but for whatever reason, I was busy or couldn't make it. I always thought I'd be there for the next one.
It may sound cheesy but in the end you can only have regrets. I think that the store closing also comes just in time to fuel my campaign to keep physical CDs in record stores (or stores in general). I was actually planning to talk about my #CDsNotDead campaign in a separate post but I think I'll start talking about it here.
With the store's closing came the announcement of a week long sale. Yesterday's sale was a Buy One Take One offer on shirts, CDs and vinyl. I had to make it to the shop before it closed at 11:00 PM, my shift was still at 12:00 AM. Arriving at Eastwood a little before the shop closed, I was running as fast as my short legs could carry me. Thankfully I made it, catching a couple of people who worked at Accenture grab a couple of band shirts.
If you have been following my posts on the blog and my social media accounts, you may have noticed that I still buy CDs (yes, Spotify may have it's advantages but I still prefer a physical CD) and my humble collection has been growing steadily. So it was a no brainier to grab as many CDs as I can right? In the words of the kuya watching over the store: "Kayo lang namakyaw ng CDs"
So here is my Farewell Built By Sonic Haul (Remember its Buy One Take One)
Foreign CDs at P495.00
Taking Back Sunday - Happiness Is
New Found Glory - Resurrection
The Used - Imaginary Enemy
The Used - Vulnerable (II) (2 CDs)
Local CDs at P195.00
Urbandub - The Apparition
<S>andwich - Five On The Floor
<S>andwich - Fat, Salt and Flame
Clara Benin - Human Eyes
I think I just added another pile to my CD collection. :)
"Kuya, anong mangyayari sa Sunday?" I asked, referring to the last day that the store would be open. "Mag-iiyakan siguro" the young kid watching over the store said, he was probably still in College. He then proceeded to tell me that the different Street Teams would probably be swinging by. Whatever they were going to have in store, I'm sure it's going to be a heart-wrenching Sunday, we have a Baptism and Birthday coverage on that day, so I'm not sure if we can drop by.
I suddenly remembered that there was also a 3 Stars and a Sun store, just right in front of the Built By Sonic shop, they sold vinly records there but sadly, by the time I got my Motorino the store was already closed. :(
I grew up having little to no extra money to buy the things that I wanted. It was only after a few years working and making my own money that I got to indulge in my hobbies (music, movies, books). There are a great number of people (the majority perhaps) who would want to save a few bucks and would rather download songs through the Internet or now, just stream through Spotify, but there are still a few people like me, who want to give back to the artist and to give them their due. Shops like Built By Sonic helped make that possible, by patronizing original band merchandise.
Hey! I pay for my Spotify premium!
Rumors are going around that Built By Sonic may become an online store, this of course is still unconfirmed news. You might have been able to tell that I'm a bit old school, so yes, it's still a different feeling going through a store's doors and making your purchase over the counter, rather than doing it after a series of clicks and waiting for your item to be shipped to your doorstep.
I can't speak for the community which the store has been able to build over the five years that they have been operating, I think that would be reserved for their regular customers and to those part of the Street Teams of the bands that the stop has been able to organize shows and concerts for. I'm merely speaking from an outsider's perspective. A music lover who regrets not being in the store, as often as I would have wanted.
Yes- there are regrets but I refuse for that to be the last feeling that I have toward the store, I would rather it be admiration and I would rather think of the store as a brother-in-arms in this fight to give music the love and respect it deserves. After all, we have a lot of things in common, we're both small but terrible, a small shop with a big sound.
I won't say good bye, but merely, take your well deserved bow, in front of cheers and flowers from your fans and admirers. We may see you again, as a different incarnation of your former self, perhaps an online store but whatever form you may take in the future, I will always see that small corner by the parking lot as the small shop with a big sound. God knows- I'll still be passing through that route for another 5 or so years.
*There are still CDs and of course band merch left in the store, I'd pass by this week if I were you. It would be hard to have just regrets in the end.*

Just Music: Tom's Story Wows in Album Launch
It was a fun night (despite the heat and the sweat) with performances from Autotelic, Musical O and Tide/Edit.
It always makes me happy to be in a crowd that moves and dances with the music and the thought that it was a big crowd just makes me all the happier. It's a Saturday night and these millennials could be doing anything but they decided to spend it in a hot crowded bar in the middle of Katipunan, to show their love and support for a local band who actually makes music and not just belts out covers or be another incarnation of a pogi-rock band because hey- those get the girls right?
Event was made possible by A Spur Of The Moment.
