Music + Events: Satchmi Vinly Day 2017

Satchmi's Vinyl Day has always been a must go-to event for Paul and myself, we love the brand and what they represent-the beauty and luxury of the good old days, which we appreciate more in these times of entitlement and instant gratification. (Plus we love vinyl, which is on sale during the event and the live acts are always the hottest in the local scene).

So, for the past few years, we have always been at Vinyl Day, this year was a little different though, since I am already seven months pregnant and waddling across the event floor can be very tiring, I forgot that you actually have to stand for these events and after two bands, I was already tired T_T.

We've actually been more absent than usual in music gigs, given my current condition, its hard to be in a cramped bar when you are so far along, plus people smoke and many trips to the bathroom will prove to be a challenge.

So why did we make an exemption for Vinyl Day? Well, I thought it would be the only music gig I would be able to go to during my pregnancy, the venue would have more space and would be more convenient for the pregnant lady. Plus did I mention we love Satchmi?

We made the most of our short stint at Vinyl Day, Paul took a few photos, I was tempted to pick up a record but my baby list says we still have a long way to go, so maybe when the little one is settled in? :)

I still wanted to see Cheats and Jess Connelly play but we had to call it a day, like I said I was ready to go home after two bands but I did have a take away from the experience, no matter how short it was.

I was am happy to see a growing vinyl community, who will spend money for a record, even when there are streaming services available. I am happy to see a growing number of people who support local music, who go to live shows to sing and dance to the music. I'm glad that a brand like Satchmi has continued to grow and remain relevant in these trying times, I'm happy to see all of these and I'm looking forward to being able to share this all with my son some day, Satchmi Vinyl Day 2017 was his first foray into the world of live music after all.

Events: Satchmi Fever

Can you believe its already been a year since Satchmi celebrated its first birthday? Well - now its time for their 2nd Anniversary celebration! I know! Time just goes by so fast!

For a little throwback on what went on during their first birthday just click here!

Now - let's see what's in store for the loyal customers and patrons of Satchmi for their 2nd Anniversary!

Great Music!

If any of their past events have proved anything is that they always, always have great music and the lineup for their 2nd Anniversary is just as awesome!

I am in love with Toni B's "Carnival" and I'm looking forward to hearing more of her songs and seeing her perform live.

We've seen and heard Tandems '91 perform and it's always a fun and crazy set when these boys are playing.

We haven't head of "No Rome" yet and I'm curious as to his music and I just love how Satchmi brings in new artists to discover. It's like when they make their line ups they make sure to bring in old favorites and new possibilities.

Exciting Launches!

Satchmi has launches in store! Such as "Film Folk" (for the photography and film lovers out there, I know Paul will be interested in this).  A "Satchmi Loyalty Card" (Yehey!), Vinyl Cleaning and Dewarping (Double Yehey!) as well as "Satchmi Beers" (this one is for Paul).

FREEBIES!

The best kinds of parties are the ones when guests get to bring home gifts and well, Satchmi has a lot of fun freebies in store for guests and patrons! You can click on their event page here to check out more details and to say that you are also going of course!

I'm also looking forward to see how the party will go, given that it will be held in Satchmi's bigger space! Remember that they already launched a cafe to go with the larger space. You can click here if you need a little refresher on that.

We actually have a wedding to go to on that day, in the afternoon so we will rush right after for the party. Hopefully the traffic won't be too bad. So don't be surprised if we appear to be a little over dressed.

Are you excited for the good kind of Fever with Satchmi's 2nd Anniversary celebration? I know we are! #SatchmiFever

Lifestyle: A revamped Satchmi has a Bigger Space and Comfort Food!

It all started with the love for the good old days-which later grew into a special nook, much like Ariel's cavern, holding countless wonders from records to film photography, beautiful pens to go with exquisite paper. Small potted plants and yes, even cozy socks.

Known for their good music and rich coffee the Satchmi Store has long been part of Metro lists and spots for places to visit and to hangout in (the fast wifi is definitely a plus).

Of course a premiere hang out place would soon be in need of food to sustain its loyal patrons.

Boasting of a wide array of scrumptious food for you to discover, Satchmi has also literally and physically grown, expanding in size to cater to the curious and the many music lovers such as myself, who spend hours among their beautiful displays and vintage items.

The larger space will also prove beneficial during events, which, if the past was any indication has always brought large crowds of audiences hungry for good local music.

Speaking of hungry- we were fortunate enough to have been able to try their new menu during their launch yesterday (July 12, 2016) and their unique and distinct image translates to their new comfort food as well.

With the help of Chef Him Uy de Baron and Chef JJ Yulo, Satchmi meets the world of gastronomy and finally included homemade food to their menu that include tasty sandwiches, from a Satchmi BLT to the favorite Reuben Sandwich; hearty soups like the Lasagna Soup, and Cheesesteak Soup; yummy bruschettas like the Satchmi Capreese, as well as the Avocado with Salmon Toast: and of course, these are best paired with the best cups of coffee by the friendly baristas.

In case you haven't seen it yet, Satchmi has also curated a line of film cameras, films and accessories under Film Folk (@filmfolk_ on Instagram). Coffee equipment, CDs from Satchmi's favorite local artists, more art and music paraphernalias are also available at the store.

Truly, these "Curators of Functional Luxuries" are making their mark and bringing a taste of the good old days in this fast-paced digital world. With this new milestone in their growing foothold they really do bring good food for your tummy and good music for your soul.

The newly expanded Satchmi Store will be open to the public on July 14, 2016.

Music + Events: Satchmi's Vinyl Day Finds New Home in Katipunan

B.P. Valenzuela surrounded by fans who sang her songs in an intimate performance for Vinyl Day 2016.

Wanting a more personal Vinyl Day experience for their music-loving clientele, Satchmi ingeniously created a physical layout which was both festive and intimate at the same time. With a circular stage, reminiscent of an actual Vinyl, fans were able to go up close to watch their favorite local acts perform. There was no high and mighty stage separating the musician from the audience. It was, as what live music should be; a live-in-the-moment experience which, even the most talented poets cannot put into words.

After their sets, fans were also able to go up to their favorite artists, to shake hands, give a hug and take a selfie with. A photo, which they would surely treasure from this colorful day.

The Reese Effect: Right after her set, fans of Reese gathered to have photos taken with the fast rising singer-song writer.

Adding new features and highlights this year, there were food trucks, live art, and yes, even a barber shop. Satchmi brings a unique experience to their events by showcasing equally passionate young entrepreneurs. You won't see the regular fast food or brand of drinks at events hosted by Satchmi, as they partner with brands who share the same vision as they do, and that is bringing their love for the good old days.

Shawarma Brothers bringing their unique flavor to Vinyl Day.

Local artists at work on their live art.

This year, I was fortunate enough to be able to not only go through the crates of records but actually pick one for myself to have and to own. Since I won a Motorino last year during Vinyl Day (thank you so much etc and Satchmi) I still pinch myself whenever I think how lucky I am to have my very own Motorino, which is proudly on display at home and is always a conversation piece when guests come over, it is covered in a black cloth to protect it from dust. The nephews and nieces have also had the "you can only look but not touch, without supervision" talk from me.

In the span of a year, my humble collection is up to twelve records. I know that it's peanuts compared to the collection of others but the love of music is there and I have Satchmi to thank for that. It was their brand that got me to start collecting records and helped cement my ongoing music collection. Hopefully I find the time to talk about my CD Collection, that #CDsNotDead movement is still happening.

I was already a little late looking through the crates, as a lot of the good finds were already sold but I still saw a boxed Paramore self titled album but even with the discount it was over my budget (once the car is fully paid in a few months, we could be having a different conversation :p) so, that's still on my wish list but getting to hold it in my hands was just like Christmas morning.

I had budget for only one record (I know, that sucks but from zero records last year to one this year-that isn't so bad right?) some records that made it to my finalist (list) so to speak, were Metric, Lenka, Garbage, Kings of Leon, Smashing Pumpkins, Keane, John Mayer, among others but I ended up bringing home The Fray's 'Helios' record, which was at 40% off and I'm very happy!

With my purchase secured, I was able to immerse myself in the amazing live performances, some from our favorite artists who we've already been following and others from artists I have yet to see perform live.

The line up of artists that performed represented a diverse genre of music. So much so that there was something for everyone, From being serenaded by Reese Lansangan to the moving beats of Tarsius and the impressive rhymes of Curtismith. I have only heard of Chocolate Grass on the Vinyl Day 2016 playlist which Satchmi prepared on Spotify. and they certainly brought the soul to Neo-Soul. Crowd favorite Jensen and the Flips brought their signature sexy swagger to the stage (the last time I was at Satchmi, their album Honeymoon was out of stock-I still have to get a copy!) I was impressed by the mash up of songs they performed, even giving a nod to E 17's 'Each Time' -I know I'm old.

Color and Light: Tarsius  dropping the beat at Vinyl Day.

I have yet to finish my album review on Moonwlk's second album 'Of the Bed' and I hope to get around to doing that really soon. Seeing them on Vinyl Day just reminded me why they are one of our favorites. The dynamic duo surprised the audience by having a full band, which just brought more love and energy to their set. I love musicians who continue working to give their listeners a different experience with each performance.

Taken By Cars performed a new song during their set bringing their much missed electro indie rock sound to a new generation of fans. Electro genius B.P. Valenzuela felt the love of the audience who sang her lyrics back to her while she performed. The petite Satchmi homegirl has been a staple during Vinyl Day but it seems that the crowd just can't get over her, year after year.

Bringing a spotlight to the good old days, Ciudad brought their infectious songs to an eager crowd. It's always a pleasure to hear my personal favorite "My Emptiness"  live.

I was really blown away when I saw The Ransom Collective perform live, I mean talk about musicality at such a young age. The six piece Indie folk band, had everyone singing to their songs. It was way past 12:00 AM but not even the early hours of the morning could keep the people from enjoying the music.

Dynamic Duo. Moonwlk's Nicholas Lazaro and Gabbi Buencamino.
Of course, freebies and prizes were not in short supply. As Satchmi generously gifted their guests with goodies throughout the night. The most coveted prize however was a Motorino and a  lucky winner was announced, not without threats of inflicting bodily harm in exchange for a Motorino though. My friend, you have been gifted with a piece of the past and the potential of wonderful moments, listening to the unique sound that only Vinyl can give.

There has been nothing but growth for this team of curators who in the past years have successfully brought their 'love for the good old days' to a nostalgic generation.

On it's fourth year, Satchmi has elevated "Vinyl Day" their 'annual celebration of vinyl and music' to greater heights, with a new home at UP Town Center in Katipunan, hosts Candy and Pauline of Jam 88.3 revealed that Satchmi's new store will open here as well.

With the after math of yet another successful Vinyl Day,  a new store in progress, an expansion of their SM Megamall store, (which will also be serving food -yehey!) and an overflowing love and support from an ever growing fan base, who have taken their love for the past to heart-Satchmi has a lot to celebrate and with all the hard work that they have put in creating their brand and following; I say that they deserve a big pat in the back.

I have said it before and I will say it again, with brand's like Satchmi being a rich playing ground for local music, we can rest well knowing that the future of OPM has a home in their cozy space and in the hearts of all of us who believe in what they represent - a love for music and of the past.

Not Your Typical Valentines: #SatchmiFeels Celebrates With Music and Quips on Love

Beautiful acoustic performance from 'Over October'.

Love and music have always been an undisputed pair that has had a constant presence in our lives and on the most romantic weekend of the year, these two come together once more to bring all the #Feels back; and no one does that better than Satchmi.

Refusing to look at Valentines from it's typical 'red hearts ensemble' #SatchmiFeels makes sure to give everyone a great time on Valentines Day, couples, folks on a date, the singles, or even those who are well...'bitter'. #SatchmiFeels celebrates (yes, celebrates) all those crazy things that love makes us feel, whether it's joy or heartache, you can count on Satchmi to give it their own unique twist.

Upon entering the store, smooth live music is already playing and the smell of coffee is sure to put you in a good mood. Folks are chilling, with either a beer (from Craftpoint) in hand, or enjoying some of Satchmi's signature coffee drinks. There was also cute and yummy cookies :)

Honestly, I wasn't familiar with any of the bands who would be performing that night but I never let that stop me from going to gigs and event because I love discovering new acts! Plus, I have great confidence in Satchmi, they have great taste in music after all :P

Here are the acts (I will definitely be looking into) that performed last Saturday:

Triple Threat: The Lovely Ladies of 'Baihana'

I especially enjoyed Baihana's 90's medley, being a 90's kid myself I had fun at the impressive (and with harmonies) medley of Britney Spears, Boybands and Girlbands. :)

A tradition of the #SatchmiFeels is their Blind Date with a Vinyl, where the records are wrapped and only have clues for you to work on. I got:

To: People Who Appreciate Great Films and their Soundtracks
From: D&F

When I opened the wrapping I got.....

The soundtrack to 'Round Midnight' now, you might think 'Aww that one was a bust!' well, you got wrong because I'm an optimist who always looks at a glass half full and what I saw (and heard) was a beautiful jazz soundtrack with lots of history :) Will post more on that soon. :)

We've been meaning to get a copy of Oh, Flamingo's! EP and were so happy when it was available at the counter at Satchmi -for only P250.00! That's a steal right there! They also have other local artists available for you to check out.

As if the chill event was not enough there was also lots of good news going around. First, was the obvious expansion of the Satchmi Store, they let the cat of the bag that it's going to be a....(drum roll please)....a CAFE! Yehey! The opening of the cafe, means food, more choices on the menu plus more space for events! We're really looking forward to that!

'The Dreamists belting out beautiful songs. I really like their cover of  Coldplay's 'Yellow'
We may have already mentioned it but just in case you forgot...Satchmi is opening a new store! Wohooooo - this one will be situated in Quezon City, the exact location is still under wraps. :)

What is not under wraps though is that VINYL DAY is happening on April 30! Wohooo! Mark your calendars! And it's happening at UP Town Center! Definitely lots of exciting news for Satchmi this year and we hope to see you at there future events. :)

Hannah + Gabi capping off the night. Don't be confused Hanna + Gabi is a solo act. :)

Have you ever thought that Valentines is over rated? Did you ever feel like you're having an aneurysm whenever you see all those couple in red? (worse, sometimes even couple shirts). Well #SatchmiFeels is just the cure for all the usual Valentines obligatory traditions. Whether you want to spend the night alone, with friends or with your special someone #SatchmiFeels welcomes everyone with open arms and no one is judging you whether you have a date or not. The Music in itself (and the great company) is the great Valentines gift, which we all gave each other.

So, thank you Satchmi for another awesome #SatchmiFeels event! Looking forward to next year!

Happy 1st Birthday Satchmi

Satchmi has steadily grown into a brand that is loved and recognized by many who share their same passion for music and a lifestyle brand that is uniquely theirs. That is why it was no surprise that on the celebration of their store's first birthday last September 26, Saturday, it was jam packed with loyal customers and supporters.

It really was a party!

There was free food courtesy of Mr. Grahams Sandwich Shop, their highly talked about Cebuano along with chips and dip filled everyones appetite throughout the event. In tandem was Mrs. Grahams macarons straight from her cafe, specially made for the event complete with vinyl record designs and plating. Their Apple Pie Soda was also served during the party as well as Craftpoints Summer Sessions. All free aside from Satchmis esteemed third wave coffee.

People got to experience fun and games throughout the event like spin the wheel with prizes from Satchmis lifestyle brands — Happy Socks, Lost Nomad, Gouache Bags, The Green House Project, Sunday Paper Co and more, there was also a sleeve face Photo Booth contest, by the end of the night the most creative photo got to take home a Motorino Mk II.

We haven't been to any music gigs lately so it was really refreshing to be in the presence of some of our country's up and coming artists. Guests were treated to awesome performances from B.P. Valenzuela, Reese & Vica, Coeli and CRWN.

Paul and I enjoyed the act of stand up comedian Chip Balbuena from Comedy Cartel, we were laughing so hard and days after the party we're still going back to his jokes. That was something refreshing and enjoyable.

It's been an awesome year for Satchmi, from Vinyl Day to the Fresh Filter Vinyl launch we just know that there are just bigger and better things in store for Satchmi. Speaking of which here are some exciting news to look out for next year!

Some of the things announced were that they are opening a 2nd branch in Quezon City (exact location still top secret) early 2016, the Motorino Mk II now comes in the new color Silver bidding goodbye to the Ivory model, a new Satchmi Blend of beans exclusive from EDSA Beverage Design Studio coming soon to the store and most importantly, a new vinyl compilation that is composed of some of their favourite performers from Vinyl Day 2013 to 2015. Some of the artists include Autotelic, Oh, Flamingo!, BP x CRWN collab, Tandems 91, Shes Only Sixteen, Reese & Vica, Imago, Taken by Cars, and more! A total of 12 tracks for a vinyl produced and manufactured entirely by Satchmi. The vinyl, entitled General Assembly” (and rightly so) will be released sometime in 2016.

Exciting things up ahead indeed-can't wait! But for now - Happy First Birthday Satchmi!

Fresh Filter Vol.1 Vinyl Launch

Despite working odd hours (mostly the night shift), since both Paul and I work in the BPO industry. We still make the time to go out and support the local music scene. Paul came from working what would be considered a double shift while I still had work ahead but we stopped by the vinyl launch of Fresh Filter Vol. 1 at the Satchmi store in Megamall-because we wanted to be part of history of local music and we believe in it's cause and mission.

It's so Fresh-it's still breathing

Unlike your usual radio shows which plays the contemporary chart topping songs (most of which are from foreign artists), Fresh Filter explores the rich yet undiscovered landscape of local indie music.
Helmed by DJ Russ Davis, the show features artists yet to be known and discovered and gives them a larger stage by playing them on the air. Listeners are then given the chance to vote for the songs that they would want to be included in the regular playlist of Jam 88.3. It's just unfortunate that Paul and I are not able to listen over to the show since we are mostly asleep when the show is on air (it plays in the afternoon during the weekdays and we're often asleep at this time due to our work schedules) but despite this set back we still follow the happenings in the show (thanks to Social Media).

Bundled OPM Freshness

Fresh Filter Vol. 1 is a collective effort of Jam 88.3, Satchmi and so many awesome people to bring together a compilation of local music on vinyl. These indie artists cover a wide range of genres. The artists themselves belong to different generations and age groups and each of them have something fresh and new to bring to the table. The compilation is so diverse that you and your friends could party to some tracks on the record At Last (Tandems '91), Irish (Moonwlk), Accidents (Cheats), Pretty Car (B.P. Valenzuela) while your parents can enjoy some of the songs as well: A Quiet Walk Outside (Library Kids), I wouldn't Mind (Ourselves The Elves), Fools (The Ransom Collective).

I'm a happy owner of the vinyl and it's great to hear your OPM favorites on vinyl it's a plus that you get to discover new acts as well :)

Launch and Bar Tour

Last May 22, the vinyl had its launch at the Satchmi store at Megamall and despite the lack of sleep for Paul and an upcoming shift for me, we dropped by the launch to get a copy of the vinyl. Paul was so tired I literally had to point what he should take photos of, don't worry he had about 12 hours of sleep when he got home :P As Paul says - if there was a band called Ourselves The Elves on the vinyl, we would be "We The Sabaw" :P

Despite our usual predicament of being tired, sleepy and/or have work to go to, dropping by the launch and supporting this endeavor was so much worth it. It was a full house at Satchmi, there were so many people it was hard to move around and seeing that overwhelming support gives such a reassuring feeling that the future of OPM is still bright. I had to wait through an entire work shift before getting home, Saturday morning to play the vinyl on our Motorino and hearing the record for the first time made me even more determined to continue on our cause to support local music. I refuse to take in what my contemporaries lay before me as music. I would rather dig in the dirt longer and unearth rare gems that shine brighter and have more value, for they are ours, our own home grown talent just waiting to be heard and discovered.

Fresh Filter Vol. 1 will be sold exclusively in the coming bar tour. You can expect awesome performances from the artists on the record. :) Can't wait for Vol. 2! For more updates on awesome music and events make sure to like and follow Satchmi and Jam 88.3.
